The lumping of Doctor Who with the other two was always bizarre, just because it was the odd duck out in so many ways. Obviously there was a significant shared fanbase, between the three, and to some degree it made sense (especially seeing as Doctor Who had recently gone through its semi-reboot and for a bit even shared a showrunner with Sherlock), but when it came down to it, you had these two distinctly modern shows that I doubt are going to have too much of an enduring legacy in the future paired with this absolute behemoth of a multimedia franchise thatâs been airing for so long, the first two Doctorsâ runs were entirely in black and white.
I could go more into why itâs a better show (and remains so! the last two seasons of Twelveâs run were some of my favorite TV ever, and Thirteen is shaping up to be a delight, as well as a huge deal for a lot of women and trans folks who feel seen) but when it comes down to it, there was always something a little strange about two recent TV shows being considered âpartnersâ to one that had been through 30+ years on the air, a cancellation, refusing to die in the form of books, comics, and audio dramas (which are also all still an ongoing effort), a failed TV movie reboot, and finally resurrecting to be even more popular than it had ever been (at least, for SURE here in the States) even in itâs previous heyday. We always joke about how Supernaturalâs been going on forever, and it kind of has been â for a normal show, not a full-fledged cultural phenomenon. Supernatural has been around long enough that if were a kid, it could start high school this year. Doctor Who has been around long enough that the ratings of its first episode were affected by audiences instead tuning into the Kennedy Assassination.
