Look I think it is commendable to write a book. That takes work no matter what. But man are there some bad ones out there.

One thing Iâve recently learned about myself is that Iâm perfectly willing to wear a t-shirt that has the word âslutâ on it anywhere except for the public library. Idk itâs like a sacred halls situation for me
From the 1985 NBA All-star game. Upon request, companion to this gifset.

Gilda (1946) but with the most fucked up throuple relationship you can imagine. Think about what could have been. The Hays Code took my unethical nonmanogamy from me.
Well, I meant to let you go, Hildy, but you know how it is. You never miss the water 'til the well runs dry.

Im literally always saying this
the most insane thing about moby dick is that i have never, ever felt more of a personal connection with a narrator - in the way that i feel like ishmael really is telling me the story. that i'm some stranger that happened to sit beside him, maybe ask his name, and suddenly he's taken my hand and telling me his story. except he suddenly disappears from his story, and it barely seems about him anymore. it's about the crew, it's about queequeg, it's about the young boy pip, it's about starbuck and the family he'll never see again, it's about ahab, it's about the ship, it's about the brutality of the whaling industry, it's about the beauty of these men who take it on, and the beauty of the creatures they hunt, and it's about god and how small and insignificant we are. and suddenly ishmael allows himself back into the story but it doesn't change anything. everything and everyone is dead and gone. 'and i only am escaped alone to tell thee.' the drama's done and the sea rolls on just as it did 5,000 years ago. the story is all ishmael has left of them. it's all he can give you. 'do you understand?' ishmael is asking you. 'can you bear the weight of their story? when remembering is all we can do to give any of this meaning? can you give any of this meaning?' and it's too late for you. you carry the story now, too. now you have to remember. grieve and remember and give it meaning.
Unfortunately I do think reading âI have wrestled with death. It is the most unexciting contest you can imagine. It takes place in an impalpable greyness, with nothing underfoot, with nothing around, without spectators, without clamour, without glory, without the great desire of victory, without the great fear of defeat, in a sickly atmostphere of tepid scepticism, without much belief in your own right, and still less in that of your adversaryâ at the age of 16 did something irreparable to my brain forever.

I like how many films set in 1790s britain are too cowardly to give the love interests of any of the characters/the sexy male hero wigs and so they instead opt to make the entire male cast look like a london corresponding society cell wrt the hairstyles
Like the people who make sense & sensibility adaptations these days are almost always unwilling to give any of the men who Marianne & Elinor are supposed to be in love with wigs or powdered hair because modern ppl do not find that attractive and so suddenly instead of Mr Ferrars weâre dealing with Citizen Edward and his inexplicable jacobin microbangs
I do understand that people are still trying to live in their uncomplicated love that they developed for Harry Potter at a young age. I loved Harry Potter a LOT when I was a kid. I was one of those kids. But itâs getting ridiculous.
Imagine, if you will, any other set of comparable kidsâ books. Imagine if Percy Jackson was so big that you heard about it everywhere, all the time, for years and years and years after its last book came out. Imagine that there was essentially a permanent rack of Percy Jackson merch at several stores in the mall for the last 20 years. Imagine that Rick Riordan spent all of his time tweeting increasingly odd, nonsensical, and sometimes offensive bits of trivia about the Percy Jackson universe that he clearly just made up with no real forethought. Imagine that instead of writing anything else, Rick Riordan wrote a dogshit Percy Jackson sequel play and several dogshit Percy Jackson prequel films. Imagine that, ON TOP of all of that, Rick Riordan started getting extremely and publicly involved with being bigoted against trans people, and has been demonstrably, materially responsible for increased discrimination against them. Now imagine going back to the source material and noticing things like the fact that Percy Jackson is a slave owner, and ends the series as a cop slave owner working for a government that has been routinely demonstrated throughout the whole series to be corrupt down to the ground. At what point would you leave Percy Jackson behind?? Seriously. What the fuck is going on.
