used to think it terribly silly (and kinda funny) when fantasy or sci-fi stories would have people refer to major recent historical events as The Flood or The Incident or The Revolution, and im sure historians fucking hate that because it's not helpful or descriptive, but we sure do be calling it The Pandemic
it was obvious to almost every nation except the hive that the hive queendom would almost certainly lose the hive war before it even started. the hive queendom was barely industrialized, still maintained a loosely feudal system of government, and did not have the economic or manpower resources to conduct a large scale war on its many neighbors.
in spite of this, the hive queendom had been internally whipped up into a fascist frenzy of ultranationalism and was confident in its ability to wage war on its adversaries. the hive war began as the hive queendom launched a swift and merciless surprise offensive on the olegrian empire's southeastern borders. the olegrian empire, already engaged in a(nother) bloody war with the sicebon commonwealth, had only skeletal reserves in the region, and its poor transportation infrastructure allowed the hive's royal army to sweep through the empire.
the early war was much in the hive's favor, as it was only fighting one major power (and the olegrian empire was admittedly the weakest of the great powers). however, with the formation of the International Coalition, spearheaded by the Recalian Protectorate, Sicebon Commonwealth (who did not stop attacking the olegrian empire throughout or after the war), and the Olegrian Empire (who did not stop attacking the sicebon commonwealth throughout or after the war), the hive began to weaken.
fighting a three front land and naval war, the hive was immediately cut off from external supplies much earlier than it had expected, preventing the nation from building up its necessary supply reserves to appropriately execute its plans of conquest. as it was pushed on the defensive, the hive entered what became known as the Steel Crisis, which was a major shortage of not only steel, but also food, leather, and essentially every warfighting resource.
at this point, the hive's fate was sealed. the nation slowly starved and its borders closed. however, the period between the steel crisis and the late war lasted 4 years. the primary reason for the length of the campaign was due to poor cooperation in the International Coalition, the hive's stubborn refusal to surrender, and its willingness to make shocking sacrifices to prolong the war. each hive town and city was paid for in the blood of countless coalition soldiers, hive soldiers, and civilians. as the war entered its last year, children and the elderly were used extensively as soldiers due to the lack of hive manpower.
by the end of the war, the hive was hollow, gored, and extensively depopulated.
its funny to me how many sci-fi and fantasy settings have humans but theyre like. completely unrelated to earth's humans. like yeah these are humans but theyre space humans from space, no mentions of earth anywhere in the extended lore. perhaps they even have a canonical home planet in the text that is explicitely not earth. but like they are humans and called humans because you cant have a story without humans. theyre just different humans. its fine. dont worry about it.

i finally wanted to draw the uniforms of the olegrian empire and then i realized that i never drew the recalian protectorate either so here are the PRIMARY uniforms of the MAJOR participants of The Hive War.
naturally, there were many smaller nations involved and each nation had more than a single uniform (except the olegrian imperial army), but these are considered the most iconic uniforms of each service's wardrobe.
