It's been just over a year since Deltarune chapters 3 & 4 released! I did the 3D work, which mostly means Tenna 📺 I figured it's been long enough to share some "behind the scenes" stuff, starting with a look at the Maya file for his static poses...
I'd individually render the poses to get that early 3D shine ✨ Here's some of them at their original resolutions! I would work from text descriptions from Toby, and sometimes there'd be a Paint sketch to help out. Gigi drew the concept that I modeled from and some poses too!
I had a lot of fun pushing myself to match the dynamic poses Toby had in mind for Tenna - making him so crazy and expressive was something I couldn't have done without his prompts. He'd draw the faces on afterward too, which really brought Tenna to life!

There was a time when I was struggling to capture what he wanted for these specific Tenna poses… Until Toby acted them out himself, and I thought, "Ah, it's like that. I understand." and then I was able to make them just how he pictured them.
When looking through the renders and choosing what to share, I laughed at these two… Remember when Tenna had a gun? Remember when he bent over in a very specific way that might remind you of another, different image? No? Maybe you don't…? Well. Don't worry about it.
These ones are cute… Tenna is pretty cute sometimes! Has anyone ever thought this? Actually, before people knew he was going to be a strange 3D sprite the Whole Time, I was worried people wouldn't like the style and it'd sour people's views on him. I'm glad that didn't happen.
Toby thought it would be funny to have Tenna do some really smooth, mocapped animations sometimes - specifically free to use ones that often pop up in other things. An extra funny part to me is how many frames these take up in the game, and how his tails are stuck to his legs…
Speaking of mocap, Toby wanted Tenna to use custom mocap animations as far back as 2016 - Ten(na) years ago! I got an Xbox Kinect at the time and learnt how to set this up, but then never used it. Here's a look at messing with mocaped stuff again in 2022. So Normal.
Don't bother trying to help him here, he's just being dramatic 🙄
I particularly like these poses - I think I improvised most of these just based off the context they get used in… I always liked posing his tie and coat tails as if they were also parts of his body he could move. Which I guess they are?
After I rendered out the individual poses in high quality, I'd force the color palette to be limited to just a few shades and then I'd shrink the result down to pixel sized sprites. Like these! I'd tidy them up a little, but they'd really get improved on at the pixel scale by Clairvoire.
As well as Tenna's sprites, I also worked on his intro "movie"…! Seeing people be completely overloaded by this on first playthroughs would always make me laugh. In game, there's a ton of extra editing done by Everdraed, but my unedited cut looks like this ⬇️
This was the entire storyboard I had to work from, and I'm realizing now that there's the note "put him in car etc" that I never did and actually don't know what it would mean exactly. Working on this had me listen to the accompanying audio many times, but it's good so it's okay.

For the 3D Ralsei clip from the intro, Toby really wanted it to look a certain way, and drew more sketches for guiding me with this part than any other. They genuinely helped.
Remember how Toby's original storyboard has the note "covered in slime and shrinks"? That meant I had to learn how to make 3D slime. You can see my tech advancing here.
I'm really happy with how the final Tenna animation at the end of the intro movie turned out! It wouldn't look as good if it wasn't for some 2D animation to reference from SmallBuStudio, so thank you to them for the help! Tenna is cute… Huh, I already said that…?
Phew!! That's a lot of Tenna. I hope it was fun to look through my posts! Oh, one more thing - the Fangamer Mr. Tenna Figurine just straight up uses the 3D model I made, which I think is really funny and cool and nice. Check it out if you want! Thanks for reading!
not to be all "these two words will change your life" or whatever, but I promise you, programming in "good catch!" as your response to people correcting you/pointing out errors or whatever removes so much friction from interactions, and comes with a delightful happy meal toy of "not hating yourself so much for making mistakes"
I had a high school science teacher who would say "if you admit you're wrong and change your mind..." and the whole class would respond back "... you aren't wrong anymore!"
And when a kid would assert something incorrect In class, he wouldn't tell them they were wrong, he would help lead them to the right answer and then when they admitted/ accepted the new information, he'd say "now we're both right! Nice work!"
For a bunch of gifted kids whose identity and reputation often was staked on knowing more than most people, it was a great safety valve. No shame in making a mistake, because if you accept it you have learned! Now you are smarter! It always made me feel better.

like obviously it's good to get a doctor to take a look at stuff if you can but I am 4 for fucking 4 on my conditions so far stop trying to act like you have access to mystical arcane knowledge that would fry my mortal brain because you went to psych school
after a lot of research, I decided that I have ADHD. the diagnostic process for that was me explaining it to a psychiatrist who went, "yeah it seems pretty obvious".
when I switched from one form of a medication to another, my doctor and I both googled the dose conversion. I came up with a better source, which is great because that spared me from getting prescribed 2/3rds of what I needed for months + having to run the dose increase gauntlet (they do not like doing that) to get back to where I started.
when I brought up autism, that same doctor argued with me and told me I "didn't seem autistic" and, when pressed, admitted that she didn't know much about autism.
I learned how to make eye contact in my late teens, I have severe textural aversions, history of public meltdowns, etc. I don't intend to seek an autism diagnosis because it can only harm me.
I started to suspect I was autistic at the end of high school, I think I started watching Community. But anyway, I was skeptical of self-diagnosis at the time, not anymore, so I spent a lot of money trying to get a diagnosis.
After talking to me a bit, the psych gave me some websites "are you autistic" quiz that he printed off, which is LESS EFFORT THAN I PUT INTO THIS BY FAR, looked at the results and said yes you are autistic. He then refused to officially diagnose me because I was getting good grades. I did get my bachelors degree but I then proceeded to burn out and I kind of just stare at the wall these days
There are a thousand reasons for self-diagnosis
On the other side of a coin, when I was 7 a psychologist once had me do an iq test (do not trust iq tests, everyone). I did very badly, and I was told that I would have been classified as... well the word used is a slur now, and I am not sure what a better way to say it would be. As it happens, the psych then started asking me questions verbally and confirmed her suspicions that I was like, anxious and an extremely slow writer due to dyspraxia. But a different psych would have completly changed the course of my life, I might not have rights today if she had gone through with that diagnosis and it was hard enough to get away from an abusive house.
The thing I don’t understand about the transandrophobia stuff is how it leads into the transmisogyny. Like, trans guys do experience oppression, and they should be allowed to talk about it, but every guy I’ve seen who’s talked about it using the term “transandrophobia” has also been extremely transmisogynistic. Not always at first or intentionally, but it’s like a pipeline I think? So like, I understand that there is a correlation here. I have observed it myself. But I don’t get it? What is it about using that word to describe their experiences that leads them to consistently become so transmisogynistic? And they talk a lot about wanting trans solidarity, but their actions don’t really reflect that? But I don’t understand how it happens. It’s like [a trans guy experiences oppression] -> [he wants to talk about it] -> [he starts talking about transandrophobia] -> [SOMETHING?????] -> [he becomes violently transmisogynistic]. And it’s like ok, the oppression IS real, talking about it IS good, but then we get to that word, and that’s where things start to go bad, but I don’t know how or why. I don’t know what happens in the “SOMETHING?????” step.
my guess is that part of it is they resent us for "appropriating" the experience of misogyny that they believe is inherent to agab. they want to be the ultimate authorities on misogyny, and they hate the idea that we have authority on discussing our own experiences of misogyny, and I think they especially resent the idea that it affects us more than it does them in many areas of life. I cannot forget how mad they got that I pointed out the wage gap between them and us
people in general are very condescending about trans women's experiences with misogyny, acting like we're appropriating what ~real~ women go through. and frankly, a lot of transandrobros seem to think of themselves as more of women than trans women in everything but name. they just say "afab" instead of "woman"
Another part of it is that no part of the transmasculine transition requires one to unpack the transmisogyny in their worldview and self-understanding. (For the record, anyone, TME or TMA, can transition without unpacking their bigotry; just look at the prevalence of racism and antiblackness across all trans spaces.) With regards to transandrobros, they were able to transition without ever having to unpack their transmisogyny, and now engage in the behaviors OP has described. They simply never stopped hating trans women to begin with.
