The problem with psychiatry and the broader mental health institution is that if the treatments make you worse, it is only ever considered a reason to double down on those treatments. No reasonable person or institution would ever believe that detaining people, resulting in them possibly losing their pets or jobs or homes while in detention, subjecting them to abuse, sexual violence, or forced drugging, then making them pay for it, would make someone less suicidal instead of more. And yet we still have psychiatric incarceration.
