If we donāt microdose delusion we wonāt make it through this reality babeā¦.
So I remember reading about this study in grad school where they have a bunch of clinically depressed people and a bunch of non-clinically-depressed people a game that was partially chance and partially skill, and asked them to estimate how much control they had over the outcome.
The depressed people were far more accurate in estimating how much influence their actions had on the outcome of the game compared to their nondepressed counterparts, who consistently overestimated the effects of their own choices on their chances of winning.
Then I remember this other study (CW animal testing) where they put rats in a bucket of water that they couldnāt get out of, so theyād have to swim. There was a fairly consistent point at which the swimming rat would falter, and stop swimming, fated to drown.
Except that thatās when the researchers would pull the rat out of the bucket, give it a nice rest warmth and a meal.
When those SAME rats who had been rescued before were put in the same situation again, they swam much LONGER than they had before.
Why? The risk was the same either way- drowning. Youād have thought that the fear of drowning would keep them swimming to their maximum length no matter what.
The researchers conclusion was that the rescued rats had something they hadnāt had the first time- they had more hope. A miraculous rescue could come, and that let them swim for longer, just in case.
I think we do microdose delusion because sometimes that little overestimation of our chances, of our luck, keeps us swimming that little bit longer, just in case something good happens. And sometimes, that little margin really does make the difference.Ā
āAll right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable."
REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.
"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Littleā"
YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.
"So we can believe the big ones?"
YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.
"They're not the same at all!"
YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YETāDeath waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.
"Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the pointā"
MY POINT EXACTLY.ā
-Terry Pratchett, Hogfather.
hey, don't just leave the quote there! the last line is what MAKES it!
"YOU NEED TO BELIEVE IN THINGS THAT ARENāT TRUE. Ā HOW ELSE CAN THEY BECOME?"
they posted a full version lol itās mr Stacyās dad for me
you have to forgive the printer because it's one of the most machine-ass machines we interact with on a day to day basis. that thing says kerchunk. hardly anything says kerchunk these days. you can't get mad at her when she kerchunks up a little.
Crazy that tech has gotten so bad that we're doing printer forgiveness now
I draw the line at printer indulgences though.
Iām drawing it underneath my many handwritten theses before I nail them to a Best Buy

pro tip: try to handicap yourself so its roughly 50-50, so they feel like theyre up against an equally skilled opponent
Pro tip: Try to use every ounce of strength you can muster so it is roughly 100-0, so they understand just how vast the gap is between their developing brains and motor skills, and your sheer raw power.
happy pride month
The parking attendant paused by the double-length bay. Intended for mobile homes and cars with trailers, it was currently occupied by a sleeping dragon.
No parts of it extended beyond the lines, and the paper ticket was clearly displayed, impaled on a horn.
The parking attendant moved on.
I was going to just queue it for later but then it stuck in my brain, and I decided to make it everyone's problem

when youāre a gay lion and you accidentally tried to introduce your lesbian lioness friend to one of her own exes at a gay bar and she goes into the bathroom and bitches you out for not being able to tell her endlessly rotating cast of girlfriends apart which isnāt really fair because first of all they all keep dyeing their hair different colors and second of all she keeps getting back together with different ones at different times and meanwhile youāve beenĀ āsingleā for like 8 months but are spending a lot of time with one specific guy who works at your old co-op and were going to excitedly tell her about it tonight but now youāve ruined the whole subject of dating by trying to introduce her to her own ex at a gay bar (which is a watering hole. because youāre lions.)Ā
cut open a package of bacon while making food tonight, and then paused to take a pic because I realized the way I open bacon is probably not normal
is it just me? does anyone else do this?

I think we've all done something very important here. thank you for your input!
Do you have ADHD
do you think I would have learned excel for this if I didn't have ADHD?
maybe there never were any twin towers. like did u ever see them?
So I know all you kids are joking around but no, youāre not allowed to make jokes about this. No.
Canāt just leave this in the tags, @the-starboy-symbiont
if theres one thing that really pissed me off from my 3 years of architecture i took in high school it's learning about how we used to have all these little techniques to maximize or minimize heat or warmth and now we just merrily abandoned all those to have the same copypaste style buildings everywhere that are often INCREDIBLY unoptimized to the local weather and climate so we can just throw more money at our heating and cooling bills
where i live it is hot as balls approximately 80% of the year. i do not want a massive butt-ugly grey mcmansion with a huge echoey open-concept kitchen-livingroom-foyer-diningroom-staircase that has huge windows so i can have an hvac unit the size of a barge heaving and straining to keep it at a constant 72 the grees. i want a north indian traditional style home with small windows to force the airflow to cool, decorative grates to limit the amount of sunlight, and a COURTYARD with a POND *smashes unspecified large object*
I hate learning about instances of "oh yeah we know how to do that, we just don't".
My very first tiger drawing and my latest

Ngl guys this entire saga and phenomenon stumbled upon is fucking frying me.
Find out the truth behind the viral claim of Toronto's Gradey Dick and Boston's Derrick White getting fined for swapping jerseys last night.
Looks like he does did do some of these but he hasnāt been fined or banned.
A question about Bill Willingham for the Steph wiki
Okay, so, I have some things I'm looking for regarding Bill Willingham for the little article I'm making bit by bit: back in the day, sometime before the infamous (to me) incident with him saying he wanted to shoot Steph fans, I recall there was reports about him berating a male fan who said Stephanie's death made him cry at a con. I don't seem to be misremembering, because I reference it in my livejournal post about the incident:
I knew from interviews and shit that Willingham was an asshole- and I'm sorry, he is, for mocking people at panels, and mocking men for daring to cry over a comic book death--
So it was a thing. But it's hard to find sources now obviously. Does anyone remember this in more detail, and especially does anyone remember the sources? I think it's good to have them to give context to just how bad his behavior was and the Steph's death thing is obviously pretty relevant.
I also recall a story about him mocking and/or being aggressive to a girl or woman to the point she was driven to tears, and Grant Morrison feelings sorry for her and having her sit next to them (as in next to Grant Morrison) at the panel to make up for it. Would be good to have a source on that one too!
I don't have much about the incident you are looking for, but I remembered the infamous "Bill Willingham derails Writing Women-Friendly Comics Panel" incident, and looked up some articles about it, in case you may find that inclusion useful:
Being an ally can be complicated, but it's not hard to NOT be an asshole.

How āWriting Women Friendly Comicsā Panel turned into the āBill Willingham Showā A Full Report on the Less Than Friendly Side of GenCon 2015
-Admin
Thanks so much! Oh God, I remember this now. I have no idea why anyone would think it was a good idea to have him moderate a women friendly comics panel. THEY SHOULD HAVE ASKED ME.
(Of course, there were a lot of bad ideas happening there. Like the all male panelists thing. lmao in the comments to the Mary Sue you have the usual guy being like 'well what if it was an all woman panel on male comics!!" Yes, I do think it would be weird and stupid if there was no man on that panel, especially in this hypothetical scenario where male-friendly comics is a thing that isn't just 'the majority of comics' and men as a gender are marginalized, thanks for the useless thought exercise)
(The only thing I can guess is someone thought Fables was a woman friendly comic? I would argue its not, a lot of women just liked it, (probs because the concept is very interesting and can appeal to anyone) but women like things that are actively hostile to them sometimes)
