The whole movie is about memories and change, as well as AI.

As Dr. Klein said, Clark puts up walls and ends up lonely as a result because he doesn't want to change. He wants to go back to the way things were. And later that literally becomes true as he is surrounded by actual walls and furniture. To him as an architect it completely fascinates him and consumes his personality entirely. He gets madder as a result, trying to bring back the past by gathering all the generated shit from the backrooms to replicate those feelings (the furniture, the entities, specifically the red haired one) and Mary Klein so he could have some sort of closure for himself. As a result, he is cannibalized by this personality, this primal fear of change that has manifested itself into a violent yet pitiful version of himself.

Trying to go back to the way things were isn't possible because it'll still be different. It won't ever be the same no matter how many times you try to replicate it. To make it feel real.

I feel like that ties into how AI is being used today. Hell, how the entertainment industry is with their infinite remakes:

Stan Lee and how corporations continue to milk his legacy after death by bringing him back via an AI chatbot, the dead internet theory and how almost any account that you see online is most likely a bot trying to mimic a person, and photos generated by AI.

But something is just off enough that you know that it isn't what it seems to be. That to me is the uncanny part, that is what the Backrooms represents.

Endless consumption of memories and nostalgia, spitting out results that have no depth or soul to them. And those who do not wish to move on for the better, happily consume it without thought and end up paying the price for it.

Just like that replica of the middle aged man. Complex human-like features on the outside, yet his insides were purely white edible sludge. The substance that Clark had been living off of for god knows how long.
