hey don't cry. on december 3, 1926, agatha christie went missing for eleven days and because the uk police didn't know what to do they recruited sir arthur conan doyle, creator of master detective sherlock holmes, but all he did was conduct a séance to try and contact her distressed spirit
Games from older consoles are being made less and less available to the point so much of the industry's history could easily vanish without
Preserving classic videogames from consoles past.
I'm just gonna slide this on in here for anyone that is interested in preserving old games. They take it very seriously too, they want an archive of every single game. Like, they have lists of every game ever released for a system, and once that system gets old enough, they add it to their archive and start collecting. Their latest addition was the Xbox 360, they opened that vault up in September 2022, and proudly announced they'd finished their collection of games for it back in April.
Also, while their game archives are almost entirely complete, they've got another project of archiving the manuals that came with those games, and that is... considerably less well filled out. Their collection of Xbox 360 manuals is especially rough, they've only gotten manuals for three games. So if you've got some Xbox 360 games kicking around, and the manual's still with them, please consider scanning them and submitting them to the site!
Game preservation is important, but people rarely consider preserving the manuals as well; I really respect Vimm's Lair for being so thorough in their archival work.
I've been using Vimm's Lair for years, I have yet to see a single bad link or virus on the entire site. It's arguably the safest and most comprehensive archive of video games in existence. Preserved history
The problem with studying the deep ocean is that humans need light to look at things, the depths of the ocean are extremely dark, and what lives there is accustomed to spending most of its time in that darkness. So when we go down there with submersibles and turn on Big Lights to see, we invariably and dramatically alter what's going on, in the same way that it's generally difficult to observe the natural behaviors of terrestrial animals if you whip out a megaphone and shout HEY GUYS WHAT ARE YOU DOING at them first.
A humble snubnose eelpout on its way to the whale fall buffet when some nearby humans give it a quick, unintrusive study:
I put this in the comments but feel it needs a reblog- Check out some of Dr Edith Widder’s work on light in the deep sea! Among other things, she used the bioluminescence of stoplight fish to deduce wavelengths which most deep sea animals can’t perceive and used that to create light filters to be able to film with minimal disturbance! And that’s how we got 25 minutes of giant squid footage!!!!

i’m going to be really honest with you guys i think the tendency to read the absolute worst possible intentions into every action you don’t agree with is getting too automatic and it’s eating you from the inside out
to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube
they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!
i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies
Saw these easy to read instructions on Twitter. Stay safe 💚
Also just a handy, DIY air filter in general, if a bit bulky. For a less bulky and cheaper (but also less effective) solution, you can simply tape one filter to the fan, cut a shroud if you'd like.
just FYI, this is quite literally what the climate scientists at my work who specialized in wildfire smoke impacts recommend. it works great, it's cheap to make, and it will make a noticeable impact on your air quality.
i have asthma & keep one of these running in my room perpetually. after I set it up the difference in my sleep quality was pretty much night and day. Dont waste your time on proprietary air filters; SIMPLY bust out the duct tape
i know the way people talk about their pets now is probably how we’ve been doing it for all of history. a cat owner in ancient rome saw their cat lounging on the dining pillows and commented “he thinks himself to be the senator claudius 🤣”
The first attested cat in Japan was given to a young 9th century emperor and his diary about it includes such gems as 'I affixed a bow about its neck, but it did not remain for long.", "The color of the fur is peerless. None could find the words to describe it, although one said it was reminiscent of the deepest ink.", "When it lies down, it curls in a circle like a coin. You cannot see its feet. It’s as if it were circular Bi disk." and "I am convinced it is superior to all other cats.” Basically posting about how his void is the best little void and so good at getting really round
In love with this random guy who had a lock slapped on his storage unit for not paying its rental and not only did he ignore management and took his stuff out without paying, but also chose to steal the lock itself and send it to the LockPickingLawyer along with a confession letter
@theoutcastrogue
cant believe you didnt include the full sentence
People always focus on the "lockpicking" part of his name and ignore that the lockpicking lawyer is, indeed, a lawyer, and can tell you exactly which crimes you committed in getting this lock to him

living under a rock is so fun i love watching a movie that’s been famous for decades and being like wow this is so good.. did you guys know about this
Having a job is an awesome way to stay hydrated because you get so bored you start drinking water just for a little excitement
i have a secret third opinion about self dx discourse which is “why are you guys treating the DSM like it’s the fucking bible”
the amount of leftists who uncritically support the DSM-5—wielding it online in battles against random individuals who might be “faking” a disorder—boggles my fucking mind. you guys realize that the DSM-5 isn’t the only diagnostic manual on the planet, right? you realize that we place it at the top of the global hierarchy because it’s american, right? has it occurred to you that the APA shouldn’t have so much authority over what counts as a “real” mental illness? has it occurred to you that perhaps there are other diagnostic manuals? in fact, there are dimensional models that don’t rely on sorting individuals into “disorder/no disorder” boxes in the first place. food for thought, lmao
on one hand when people call qifrey and olruggio the girls' dads it doesn't bother me as much as it does for a lot of other characters, because credit where credit is due they are in fact raising those children right now. but also it does kind of piss me off in a different way than it does when like, people call's phoenix apollos dad. because the master-apprentice(s) relationship seems to be the default/primary unit of witch society... we are shown that the master and apprentice bond carries equal social/legal standing (or possibly higher!) to that of the immediate family. so like.... calling them their dads almost seems like kind of a downgrade by the setting's standards. isn't it interesting that this is a society structured in a way where you pretty much just hand your child over to someone else to raise for the remainder of their adolescence, and the child is legally entitled to choose who that person is. that's a neat interpersonal dynamic you're setting up there! it's got a different flavor to it!!! but i know people don't want different flavors of things. they want everything to be the same. [starts kicking rocks in the dirt] whatever... whatever... i don't even care
#like it's such a good degree of agency given to the children I can't really think of any real world equivalent to it#but also it sucks that even with that level of agency sometimes there's still horrible and abusive masters#but just the fact that the master has to put in SOME effort for the kids to just not choose a different master#like wow this world is beautiful children are treated as PEOPLE <333÷#the closest thing to real world could maybe be a boarding school comparison but not even that leaves the kids hands free to leave#it's so good these kids are encouraged to be independent and to grow and to choose for themselves#god it's so good
this is kind of just not true though. like that's obviously the idea behind it but it does not actually work that way in execution, which is suuuper important. i think that witch hat atelier goes pretty significantly out of its way with richeh, rili, and euini to show that masters actually Don't need to put in any amount of effort, and in fact can be actively abusive, while their apprentices still feel obliged to stay with them for reasons beyond 'i'm not allowed to leave'.
like here's the scene from the manga where qifrey talks to euini about this
im sad this interaction got cut from the anime because its soooooo so important... it establishes that the power dynamic between adults and children is such that the child still feels obliged to live and behave by the terms their guardian sets for them, and they're still going to be internalizing everything that is said to and about them by their authority figure. and then there's the fact that On Paper the policy of apprentices choosing their master means any child being subjected to this kind of emotional abuse is doing so "willingly", which provides a structural barrier to actually addressing that abuse, because the adults who do notice and care do not have any formal grounds on which to intervene.
it just adds so much texture to the whole dynamic because witch society is so rigid, conservative, and hierarchical. of couuuurseee their pedagogy is such that apprentices are going to end up internalizing mistreatment by their masters as a personal failing rather than harm being done to them. whatever independence can be said to be encouraged in these children by the laws of their society just kind of serves as a smokescreen for the fact that what they're ultimately expected to Choose to do with this independence is obey and conform.
