Introduction
Hello, I donât know what Iâm doing, but Iâm here for the c!Dream angst. So, you know there is going to be plenty of good old prison arc and mature content though Iâll try to be mindful of profanity if not in dialogue. Obviously, Iâm a c!Dream apologist. And not that you need to know but I am also autistic, as well as an artist and an alliteration addict. ;) I was previously a poet before I very recently started writing fanfiction so Iâm a sucker for flowery writing and analysis, even though Iâm actually a transportation engineer.

Ya know, I think my love for c!Dream comes not out of how good or bad the things he did are, but how I find him more compelling. Sure, one could say that a character like c!Tommy is a better person because he didnât do human experiments or decimate a whole nation, but it doesnât matter, and not because I condone it, but because I find it hard to respect a character so egotistical and imprudent. See, itâs not about the morality or misdeeds of a fictional character, but about how much I respect and value their reasonings, motivations, thought process, and character arc. So yeah, c!Dream may have committed atrocities, but I still love him and not just because of the captivating mistreatment he faced, or how well I can connect to his story and his characteristics, or how I simply enjoy watching him, but because I personally find him to be a more compelling.
And if that makes me a âc!Dream apologist,â then so be it. But letâs be clear, I ainât apologizing for what c!Dream did and I ainât apologizing for liking him. I think perhaps the âapologistâ term comes from having sympathy for a character, but I think itâs important to know those are not synonymous. Sure, people say âIâm sorry that happenedâ when being sympathetic, but there is no actual apology meant there, itâs just meant to show commiseration, compassion and empathy for the suffering of others. So, then yeah I guess I am a c!Dream apologist and c!Dream sympathizer because Iâm just a fan who commiserates with c!Dream.

Got this comment by @selenite-moonstone-2019 on this [post] and per usual my answer ended up too long lol but I thought it was also a good discussion to share :D
So, while that is the common understanding of the timeline, it is actually not universally accepted (even by more than just me) because like a lot of dsmp things it is still just an assumption and there is no irrefutable evidence for it. Sure, its on the channels and the website, but there is actually no mention of the timeline in the revival video itself or anywhere else Iâve found, so people assume that is the case based on speculation founded primarily I think on the layout of the video and on the idea that Dream would want to make sure the book works prior to his planned arrest incase they decided to kill him, which of course makes sense and seems like a logical thing to do. This is not an unreasonable perception and I even believed this too. That is until I noticed actual proof in the form of the map in that revival video showing Lâmanberg covered in vines and such placing it post prison [post]. So, while unrecognized by people, I did find actual concrete lore evidence placing the experiments after prison not just reasonable assumption.
There is of course a world in which we ignore this and such, which I cover in that post, but I think it actually aligns with other things we know too. For example, Dream even in his evil monologues hides a lot of truth in them, so he actually does tell the truth a lot. I mean also half of his villainous master plans actually just happen not by his control. He didnât push Wilbur to destroy Lâmanberg as a traitor, he just gave the TNT after Wilbur convinced him to. He didnât push George and Sapnap away, he dethroned George to protect him which set them off and they left him. Then he gave Tommy some of his stuff during Pogtopia that ended up getting blown up. So, really the idea that he âcut his attachmentsâ is bullshit when he just simply lost them. Plus, he didnât even steal the items in his evil vault, they were already in his possession.
Like his masterminding so often is not by his design lol. So, for him to be telling the truth to Tommy and Sam about Tommy being the first revival, as well as him telling the truth about how they experimented on them for quote âmonthsâ (since they could not have done so for months before as there is not enough time to do so between when Vikkstar last appears on the server [Dec 28th] and Dream is arrested [Jan 20]) isnât actually that uncharacteristic of Dream.
It also actually means that perhaps the experiments started around the posting of the video in the January after he gets out. In addition, it then makes sense why he would be so afraid of people like Quackity killing him in prison after he gets bored of torture because either Punz canât (perhaps doesnât have the book) or Dream doesnât know if itâll work hence the experiments later. Like itâs always bothered me that if death is not that big of a deal and so meaningless like he makes it seem in the finale then why does he seem so freaking afraid of it in prison if Punz could just bring him back. I mean yes Iâm sure we could come up with other reasons why, but this explanation works well.
And if the experiments happened after about 11 months of inhumane treatment, I think itâs a lot more understandable for him to have lost his mind after being tortured and driven to insanity in prison to the point he thinks experiments on people is reasonable for the greater good. Prison and the aftermath then can clearly define the place where things begin to really become âjumbled.â Where an obsession for knowledge, immorality, power and revenge is born from fear and pain and indignation. Iâm not saying itâs right, but Iâd say itâs par for the course after being in isolation so long and all the rest that happened in prison. That after being tortured, torturing other people seems a lot less unthinkable than it did before.
Also, that timeline is more accurate to the cycle of real life that hurting people hurt other people. Like bullies are often facing things at home. And thereâs a reason many horror movies show the abuse that created the killer and itâs not to brush off what they do as okay, but to make them a more compelling character that you can see the path of events that led to their breaking point.
But even if we ignore that and stand by the experiments happening before, I think itâs important to note that during the height of the fandom this âDream deserved itâ mentality was widely supported long before January of 2022 (when the revival book video came out). I was late to the fandom but I was there during prison arc and saw it all over, so letâs not pretend that that mindset amongst the fandom was largely founded by the human experiments because for a lot of the fandom that wasnât it (still isnât). So even if we say the experiments happened before, neither the audience nor characters knew that until later and yet still said on multiple occasions about how Dream deserved it and that to me is wild. Hence why my statement in the orginal post was âThe sentiment that c!Dream deserved the Prison Arc especially because of what happened in Exile is so messed up to me.â Because itâs that belief of Exile making it deserved that really bothers me, way more than the idea of him facing some kind of karma for torturing Vikkstar and LazarBeam.
Even so, as a pacifist, an unsupporter of revenge, who believes that everyone has the capacity for change even if unlikely to, and certainly has the right to be treated with human decency no matter if they showed the same for others, I think that itâs disturbing to see so many people believe that anyone, nonetheless someone who didnât even commit mass genocide like Hitler, but at worse (and Iâm not trying to downplay but Iâm just comparing) tortured a couple of guys for months, deserved an eternity in that torture box considered by Tommy (before Quackity) to be a fate worse than death [post].
Furthermore, to say the experiments were worse than prison I think is rather unreasonable. Especially because firstly, Dreamâs sentence was forever, so even though he was broken out, the intended sentence they thought he deserved was a lifetime, which is a hell of a lot longer than months. But also since I recently looked at Minecraft deaths, letâs look at the math of things. There are about 70 ways they could have died in that minecraft version including the caves and cliffs update (78 if we include the updates since the dsmp). Course being slain includes any object so letâs add in all 6 of the the weapons/tools. Now adding that up you get 76 (or 84) Minecraft deaths. Now that number does include the messages âkilled by â while trying to escape playerâ and âkilled by â while trying to escape player using named thingâ which is perhaps inaccurate cuz are we really saying they felt the need to squash someone with an anvil with and without hitting them first? Seems redundant. Regardless, if you exclude the newer updates, you get a number that is still less than the 83 days Dream was tortured by Quackity. So even if we assume they did one death per a day, then they still suffered a shorter amount of time. And thatâs not taking into account his total 314 day stay in the inhumane conditions of Pandoraâs Vault, which again was defined by Tommy as worse than death.
Additionally, the fact that Dreamâs torture was not intended to be fatal and therefore was allowed to heal in between means that he suffered more times (like how because Techno was healing during Quackityâs torture with the shears, he was hit 55 times instead of the 20 times it would have taken to kill him [post].) So really, Iâm gonna have to disagree that being killed repeatedly is worse, I mean plus given how Dream feeds Sam in Daedalus and clingy duo in the finale, Vik and Lazar were likely fed way more consistently and better than Dream was. So yeah, Iâm not saying the experiments werenât torturous, savage and horrible, this is not be brushing it off, but what I am saying is I donât think we can reasonably say it was worse than prison.
Finally, I think you can feel bad for a character without liking or supporting their actions. Like I can feel bad about what happened to Tommy in exile and prison and still hate his guts lol. And I can sympathize with him even if I say that whether or not you see it as karma or justified, some of the things that happened to Tommy were directly of his own making. These things arenât mutually exclusive. So I think itâs fine to like and empathize with Dream even if you discount everything Iâve said above. Because you donât have to write off the torture he put Vik and Lazar through to feel bad for what happened to Dream in prison and to consider prison not a just, deserved or fitting fate. (And as an aside, given how Sam and Quackity treated Techno and Tommy in prison I think there are more reasons beyond what they did to Dream to also hate them lol. Just saying.)âŚ

Thinking about Dream giving up the book to stop Quackity from cutting off his leg [scene] only to become more and more catatonic with every death and revival. The cruel reality of still being able to walk and run and jump but simply refusing to move. Why get up just to be sent back down to the ground again and again and again. Where can he even go but back to limbo over and over. Thereâs no point in trying to get away anymore, they no longer have to worry about killing him. They donât need to catch him anymore, they just have to get close enough to send a blade through his flesh uncaring of whether itâs fatal or not. Sure, he can still run, but all he wants is to rest 6 feet under...
He paid 300 deaths for his appendage⌠perhaps thatâs why his ghost wanders around the server so much, he has to get good use out of the leg he lost it all forâŚ
Why do I feel like based on the security reset card and the secret books Dream gave Techno in prison, that the Revival Books were literally just books titled Revival Book that said, ârevival bookâ insideâŚ.
The thought of Dream telling Quackity thatâs whatâs in the Revival Book rotted my brain all night that I couldnât help but write a couple scenes of how it could go first thing this morning. The first of which is where Dream is being more silly, and the second is where Dream is more desperately adamant.
TRIGGER WARNING: Torture, Maiming, Profanity, Blood⌠etc, ya know typical torture box things :]
âFine. Fine, okay. You wanna know? You wanna know what it says? âFuck youâ thatâs what it says.â Dream remarks smugly as Quackity rips off another fingernail.
âDonât get fucking smart with me, Dream. Iâll just take a finger next. You want me to do that? Huh?â
âOkay, okay, Quackity. Fine, you got me, it actually says ârevival bookâ,â he corrects, the smirk remaining plastered on his face.
âYou think youâre funny, Dream? Is that it? You think youâre fucking funny? Hmm?â Quackity responds, pulling off the last nail of his left hand.
And he is being funny, just in a more ironic way than Quackity realizes. Honestly, it probably shouldnât be funny at all. That heâs giving Quackity the answer and he wonât even believe it, should probably not make him want to laugh. And yet, it is funny. Maybe his head has just smashed into obsidian too many times.
âNo, I swearâI swear, Iâm not even joking, thatâs what it says, Quackity. You know, it just says ârevival bookâ.â Dream fictitiously pleads, amused by his prank.
Heâs not even sure whether heâs pranking himself or Quackity. Itâs supposed to be Quackity. And yet, as the pliers dig into his thumbâs nail bed, it feels more like the joke is on him. That the irony is on him. That this really might be his new reality forever if his torturer wonât even believe him. At least until Quackity grows tired of tormenting him and then kills him instead.
âMan, youâve fallen off. I swear you used to be funny, Dream.â
âIâm hilarious, to be fair.â He grins, shoving down the panic filling his chest as Quackity pulls out the shears.
â OR â
âGive me the book, Dream!â Quackity demands digging the sword further and further into Dreamâs calf.
Dream tries not to scream, clenching his jaw till it hurts as blood drips onto obsidian forming small pools in between the sharp peaks of the uneven surface.
Twisting the handle like a drill, Quackity yells again, âGive me the fucking book!â for what has to be the millionth time in this godforsaken cell. Itâs really getting old.
âIâm not giving you the fucking book, Quackity!â Dream eventually answers like he has done so many times before, but that doesnât stop Quackity from digging the blade in further till it hits the obsidian on the other side.
The rage that colors Quackityâs face, almost makes Dream want to laugh, because how dare he be frustrated. If anyone should be angry it should be the one helplessly lying on the ground with a sword impaled through his leg. But the frustration isnât new for Quackity, it is perhaps Dreamâs only entertainment at this point, to see just how much he can piss him off.
The malevolent glint in Quackityâs eyes of something hungry and savage is however not a common sight and it promises unpleasantness to say the least.
âAlright, alright, fine, Dream. Fine. Since you donât seem to care about the condition of your leg here, how boutâ I just cut it off? Hmm? Should I do that, Dream? Would you like that?â Quackity threatens while pulling out the sword, undiluted vitriol coating his tongue.
That gets Dreams attention, âWaitâWHAT?!â as he tries to use his arms to crawl back away from the maniac holding a diamond sword.
He doesnât get far before Quackity steps on Dreamâs currently less bloodied leg, effectively pinning him in place and likely breaking multiple bones in the process.
âWait, stop! Please, Quackity, stop! You donât have to do this.â
âYouâre right. Youâre right. I donât. I donât have to do this. I donât have to as long as you give me the book.â Quackity offers, lining up the sword to cut halfway between his foot and knee.
âQuackityâplease, please, please, please, please, please stop. Please stop!â Dream lets out desperately, wanting to walk and run and jump again.
âYou know, what I want, Dream. You know what I want. You can stop this. You can stop this, just tell me whatâs in the Revival Book and Iâll stop. â He says swinging the sword.
The blade is less than a foot away when Dream finally blurts out, âFineâokay, okay, itâsâitâs rârevival bookâ
Part of him feels ashamed for giving up. Part of him sighs, hoping that the pain will finally end. Part of him scolds him for signing his death certificate. And part of him just laughs because he has been tortured for days over something that, at the end of the day, really is that simple.
Too simple to be believable apparently, because after stopping and studying Dream with an intense stare, Quackity spits out, filled with nothing but exasperation and doubt, âWhat the fuck do you mean âitâs revival bookâ?â
âItâsâyou know, you just write ârevival bookâ in a book and burn it.â Dream answers, unsure of which part of him convinced him to give up after making it through so many days of torture.
The practical part, he supposes. The part of him that knows that walking again is far more important than his pride.
Not that it matters, Quackity just laughs disbelievingly, but thereâs nothing genuine about it, âYou think youâre funny huh? You think youâre fucking funny, Dream?â
âIâm being serious! I swearââ he tries before Quackity cuts him off.
âOh, Iâll show you serious, Dream. Iâll show you how serious I am.â Quackity voices, low as he raises the sword again.
Dream is barely able to scream, âSâSam!ââ before the blade lands, hitting the floor with a loud clang.

Thinking about ghost Dream from my recent au [post] again and Sam somehow disabling Dreamâs chat and death messages, maybe with XDâs help or perhaps muting Dreamâs confiscated communicator, so the server doesnât know about Quackityâs experiments.
Thinking about Punz being the first to meet the scarred, desaturated ghost Dream as he walks down the path with a light grey sheep at his side. At first, Punz thinks maybe this is a Mexican Dream or Girl Dream situation, but then they come across Quackity and Sam walking toward them and the ghost freaks out. Begging, shaking, crying even though the tears are burning his cheeks. And even though, unlike in the cell, Dream could run away now, it doesnât even cross his broken mind, instead he just crumples to the ground and wraps his arms around his knees. Punz is so confused until he notices the blood on their clothes and starts to suspect whoâs it is. Immediately, he moves in front of Dream, pulling out his sword. The ghost flinches at the blade leaving the sheath but doesnât move, just simply squeezes his eyes shut. Waiting for the pain to come. To his surprise though, Punz strikes at Quackity instead, sending the unarmored man to see death with one critical blow. (Later, heâll regret giving the torturer the undeserved mercy of a quick death, but in the moment he didnât know what they did, not really.) Sam puts up more of a fight, but heâs more used to fighting the helpless and not even his armor can save him from Punzâs skill and fury.
Thinking about Punz finding Dreamâs communicator amongst Samâs loot and renabling the messages. Thinking about the hundreds of death messages that flood everyoneâs screen at once making them all gasp in shock if nothing else.
Thinking about Punz throwing up and struggling to keep the tears in before turning back to Dream and crouching down. âTheyâre gone. Youâre safe, now.â
Thinking about the look of doubt and bewilderment on Dreamâs face as he stares into Punzâs glassy blue eyes.
Thinking about Punz moving to hug Dream but upon noticing him flinch away, stop and ask first, âWould you likeâcan I hug you?â
Thinking about Dream nodding, assuming itâs rhetorical or a trick. His shattered mind unfamiliar with a time when touch didnât mean pain, when ânoâ mattered, when he had any say in what people did to him.
Thinking about Dream going stiff in the embrace at first, except for the trembling. Waiting for the pain to come. But as time goes by and nothing happens besides a sharing of warmth, Dream melts into it. Nothing can cure the cold of death, but Punz will be damned if he didnât try with everything he had. Nothing can fix what has been torn apart piece by agonizing piece, but the pieces of his torturers are torn apart in turn and soon the prison is nothing but ruins, Samâs island is nothing but sea, Samâs base nothing but rubble, and Las Nevadas nothing more than a hole down to bedrock.
Oh no! The reset happens because the Egg and DreamXD End finale still happen, but Techno and Punz destroy the prison so there is no nuke or whatever situation that happens. Overall, as the first post kinda says at the end, most people leave him alone cuz heâs hardly a threat now and also if they so much as lay an unwanted hand on him, Punz will destroy them and everything they care about. They also donât really want to face what they let happen so most people donât seek him out. And most of those that do interact try and treat him like a different person similar to how they did with Ghostbur. Though in this case instead of not remembering the bad, Dream pretty much only remembers the bad, with his time in prison being the main foundation of his memories.
Because of this he actually has an aversion to certain people like Sapnap and Tommy given how they threatened/tried to kill him in prison, which of course is very upsetting for Sapnap. A lot of his memories in general are pretty muddy so while he recognizes the people on the server he doesnât really remember much about them or their past. Bad is practically the only person he has clear good memories of, so his closeness to Punz and Techno is primarily formed from the present rather than the foggy memories of the past.
So, given his more neutral status as ghost when heâs not just roaming around the server picking flowers, he does hang out with some people (as long as they put away their armor and weapons). Niki teaches him how to bake and make bouquets. Puffy, Bad, and Foolish build cute little colorful statues around the server with him (like the Rat atop Badâs house and the duck). Techno gets his help feeding the woofs and recounts greek myths to him when he struggles to fall back asleep after a nightmare. And while Tommy just tends to avoid the ghost, Tubbo to me has always seemed more reasonable and I can imagine them playing chess and building a new bee sanctuary with PunzâŚ
Ah yes, that. Well, it is my belief based on the things we get in the lore [post] that Punz doesnât get the book before prison and therefore canât bring Dream back. But even if he got the book from Quackity, he still wouldnât be able to bring him back because as mentioned in the first post, the revival book doesnât work on Dream anymore, otherwise heâd still be getting killed.
âOn death 300, he learned that gods did grow bored.
There was no death 301.
He didnât come back no matter how many books they burned. Only his ghost remained.â [<>]
Why 300 is the max is unknown. What Dream does know is that on death 200 DreamXD actually shows up, enticed by all the death of course and even participates hence these messages:
Interestingly, 299 is a stand in to prevent crashing when a death message is too long, which I put in there as kinda a nod to XD getting creative out of boredom. But whether or not XD actually created the rule that 300 deaths is the max or whether it was Lady Death, and whether it was preexisting or the gods got bored/took mercy on Dream and created the limit on the spot, remains to be seen. Regardless, Punz did get the book and he did try, but much to his misery he found out from Sam that 300 must be the max and it didnât matter how many times he also tried he still couldnât revive DreamâŚ
Omg found this blog andâthe amount of insane detailed analysis the you and the fans here on tumblr have done for the prison arc is truly wonderful! Imma be lurking for days reading this stuffđ
Truuuuuuuue. We can definitely be insane about the prison arc and there is so much good analysis around. :] Mind you I feel like we are only matching the cc energy. I mean it was them who came up with it in the first place and even talked about a drinking system for saltwater punishment, so really we are simply matching their unhinged. But yeah, welcome, please enjoy! :D Iâm always so happy to have people appreciate my madness. I mean I sure as hell put a stupid amount of time into it thatâs for sure. And I did make the indexes for a reason. <3
hey! my name is Lotus (Snow on ao3) and I'm new to tumblr :)
I found your page on your ao3 fanfics. And just to let you know I am a sucker for c!dream angst and DSMP discussions. I absolutely love your fics, espcially pink goes good with green!
I'm working on a fic revolving discduo called: ill, ink, seethe. It takes place after pogtopia era and right before exile. its mainly tommy pov but lot's of Dream angst. If you're interested, I'd love it if you would check it out. A sort of author to author sort of thing :)
Absolutely no pressure tho. I can send you the link, or you can just go on my blog and find it here. Hopefully I set if up right
Thanks for your consideration :D
Welcome! <3 I'm afraid you've come at a bit of a low point, but there are still plenty of us peeps around and on the plus side there is far less drama going on which is nice. :) I'm so glad to hear you enjoy my fics. Thank you so much for reading them and for saying that, it's really nice to hear. <3 <3 Though, I can't believe my new less effort and probably least angsty fic is your favorite lol but I suppose it is a very cute dynamic and I am happy to hear you like it because their dialogue has been making me insane as of late.
Normally, as much as I appreciate c!Tommy as a character, I do also hate him lol and don't particularly like his pov. In fact, I have even skipped it in fics before (ironic since I did recently write some stuff in his pov I'll get around to posting one of these days), but since you have been so lovely, I'll take a look. You better not be lying about c!Dream angst though or I'll be upset. Did you want any particular feedback or opinions on it or more so just sharing?

Thinking about the hundreds of death messages that flood everyoneâs screen at once making them all gasp in shock if nothing else.

finding out there's people who want to write but don't read books and that apparently the take 'you need to read to improve your craft when you write' is like, ableist. i'm. please. please read books.
Yeah, like if I can write fanfic, read lots of other fanfics, edit multiple friendsâ fanfics despite being dyslexic, having adhd and a vision disorder related to reading comprehension and speed, then I hardly think itâs ableist to suggest writers should read books to improve. If your disabilities are keeping you from reading then you are not reading the right thing. I find that because of the struggle and effort it takes itâs important for me to find something I deem worth the effort of reading. Not to say you shouldnât challenge yourself to read something hard, but in general if youâre not enjoying it, put it down and find something else. Alternatively, if reading just requires more energy than you have or you feel like you just donât have the time, consider audiobooks or browser readers. You can listen in the car, while you walk, while you take the train, do the dishes, clean your room etc. Reading is important. Especially for writers.
