Introduction

Hello, I don’t know what I’m doing, but I’m here for the c!Dream angst. So, you know there is going to be plenty of good old prison arc and mature content though I’ll try to be mindful of profanity if not in dialogue. Obviously, I’m a c!Dream apologist. And not that you need to know but I am also autistic, as well as an artist and an alliteration addict. ;) I was previously a poet before I very recently started writing fanfiction so I’m a sucker for flowery writing and analysis, even though I’m actually a transportation engineer.

Like sure I can see how messed up it is for c!Sapnap to visit prison only for him to threaten c!Dream, but for c!Techno to confirm it, even if more humorously, just feels so good.

[38:14] Techno: “You gotta raise your standards, man. You gotta raise your standards. You’re just getting treated like dirt out here, man. That is just sad.”

Or him talking about the prison.

[clip] Techno: “I don’t know, what kind of prison is this? They don’t have psychologists? I’m starting to think that they don’t care about our human rights all that much… you—you were saying that you were getting tortured? Wh-who’s been torturing you?”

[19:08] Dream: “Wow, you left out locking me in prison for a year and letting me be tortured day after day by someone for financial benefit.”

So of course it can vary with genre, but to me a good ending isn’t about whether it’s always happy, but whether it completes the story in a satisfying way, where the theme and change that happened come to a close. This is a difference between a character like Tony Stark and Dean Winchester, who both end on the line of “you can rest now.”

While *spoiler alert* they both tragically die in the end, I think the tragic ending is satisfying for Tony and not for Dean.

See, Dean Winchester had always been a suicidal character with little value of his own life. So not only could the finale for him happen on episode one, but we actually have already seen his death/ near death on multiple occasions (S1E12, S3E16, S7E23, S11E17…etc). Which begs the question - why should I bother watching 15 seasons if in the end nothing changes and it didn’t matter. Furthermore, it’s a bad ending because part of Dean’s story arc and the story at large has been the theme of ‘always keep fighting,’ but Dean also has been learning how to value himself and learn how to live a fulfilling life, to be more than Sam’s guardian and “a good soldier and nothing else, Daddy’s blunt little instrument” [S3E10]. So, for him to die and Sam to live a happy life is a bad ending because Sam has chosen to move on and live life multiple time, I mean that’s where the story begins.

On the other hand, Tony Stark is a character who even self defines as ‘living to pleasure’ himself. The bad guys in his solo movies are all more or less self created and out for revenge. As Captain American says in Avengers, “I've seen the footage. The only thing you really fight for is yourself. You're not the guy to make the sacrifice play, to lay down on a wire and let the other guy crawl over you. […] You know, you may not be a threat, but you better stop pretending to be a hero.” True, he does technically sacrifice himself on other occasions, but one could argue he both did it when he didn’t know for certain if he’d die and obviously ultimately didn’t die, unlike in Endgame where he knows it’ll be fatal. Also, his near death in The Avengers serves as a nice foreshadowing and parallel to the end so that also makes it satisfying. See, sacrifice isn’t Tony’s default characteristic, he had to grow to become the hero willing to lay down his life, but on the other hand Dean’s default has always been a willingness to lay down his life so throughout the story he was learning to value his life more. So for him to do so in the finale was a terrible ending because it didn’t highlight his character growth, plus it also portrays the message that death is a happy ending for the suicidal character, which I’d say is certainly harmful for the audience, but also goes against the very theme of ‘Always Keep Fighting.’

But when Tommy accidentally killed Tubbo’s bee, he burned down his house. [post] [2:31:14]

Mind you, a house that Dream helped rebuild and left a gift with [2:07:49] [post]

Though of course it’s only fair to mention that Tommy (off screen) did later leave an apology and 27 diamonds [1:26], however it should also be noted that Tubbo originally asked for 20 diamonds as reparations for Tommy stealing from him and killing his bee, to which Tommy then burned down his house instead.

Then he straight up dives into the lava to recover the pickaxe Dream accidentally dropped. [2:51:51]

He also rescues Dream with fire res after a failed clutch

[2:54:02] Dream: “Oh, he has extra fire res. Punz is such a nice guy, George. Did you know?”

And after Sapnap and George fight and his helmet breaks, Punz gives George a netherite ingot to make a new one. :) [3:04:55]

c!Alyssa finds c!Dream’s first, walking into the community house and stunned by how much its changed. On one hand, it looks more architecturally appealing, but where is the aquarium? Where are the beds and chests and people?

c!Dream is there though, returning to the place where it all began. He doesn’t tell her how he had a part in blowing it up, how could he? He wasn’t gonna tell her much about him at all, worried about risking her safety by seeing her with him. But she is also under geared compared to everyone else and the vision of her dying over and over in the beginning haunts him. He can’t just leave her alone. Even if she’s in more danger by his side.

It’s selfish really because he honestly does just want company. It’s been so long since someone besides his few allies looked at him without venomous hatred and fear. It’s been so long since someone besides his few allies didn’t greet him with a sword to his throat. It’s been so long since he’s been treated like just a person, just c!Dream. Not a prisoner, not a body to be harmed, not a powerful book, not a necromancer, not a villain, not a monster, not a victim, not broken.

More than anything he didn’t want to change that. Didn’t want to lose that. Lose the way she looked at him and talked to him so simply. Without pity, without greed, without hostility. But when she noticed the limp in his step, true, he could’ve lied, but he was so tired of lying (so tired in general - the consequence of avoiding nightmare filled sleep), so he reluctantly told her about prison, and c!Quackity, and c!Sam, and he expected the reaction he always receives - a brief shock and disbelief easily brushed aside. Like it didn’t matter, like his pain is irrelevant. Like his suffering means nothing, isn’t notable. Like he has no right to be upset, to be hurt, or want escape from the misery. Because it was deserved. There was a reason. So how he feels is unreasonable, irrelevant, inconsequential.

Remarkably, she doesn’t react that way. Instead her face fills with horror, then anger, then sadness, then sympathy. And when her eyes finally land back on his, they’re glossy and she asks for a hug and when he nods she holds him tight, saying, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have left… I didn’t—I really didn’t think it would get this bad… I didn’t think—I couldn’t even in my wildest dreams have imagined this.”

He didn’t name his parrot, or his dogs, or the dog in prison or technically the cat in prison.
