"My fur family" 🐶🐱🐰🐭
“Get a rat and put it in a cage and give it two water bottles. One is just water, and one is water laced with either heroin or cocaine. If you do that, the rat will almost always prefer the drugged water and almost always kill itself very quickly, right, within a couple of weeks. So there you go. It’s our theory of addiction. Bruce comes along in the ‘70s and said, “Well, hang on a minute. We’re putting the rat in an empty cage. It’s got nothing to do. Let’s try this a little bit differently.” So Bruce built Rat Park, and Rat Park is like heaven for rats. Everything your rat about town could want, it’s got in Rat Park. It’s got lovely food. It’s got sex. It’s got loads of other rats to be friends with. It’s got loads of colored balls. Everything your rat could want. And they’ve got both the water bottles. They’ve got the drugged water and the normal water. But here’s the fascinating thing. In Rat Park, they don’t like the drugged water. They hardly use any of it. None of them ever overdose. None of them ever use in a way that looks like compulsion or addiction. There’s a really interesting human example I’ll tell you about in a minute, but what Bruce says is that shows that both the right-wing and left-wing theories of addiction are wrong. So the right-wing theory is it’s a moral failing, you’re a hedonist, you party too hard. The left-wing theory is it takes you over, your brain is hijacked. Bruce says it’s not your morality, it’s not your brain; it’s your cage. Addiction is largely an adaptation to your environment. […] We’ve created a society where significant numbers of our fellow citizens cannot bear to be present in their lives without being drugged, right? We’ve created a hyperconsumerist, hyperindividualist, isolated world that is, for a lot of people, much more like that first cage than it is like the bonded, connected cages that we need. The opposite of addiction is not sobriety. The opposite of addiction is connection. And our whole society, the engine of our society, is geared towards making us connect with things. If you are not a good consumer capitalist citizen, if you’re spending your time bonding with the people around you and not buying stuff—in fact, we are trained from a very young age to focus our hopes and our dreams and our ambitions on things we can buy and consume. And drug addiction is really a subset of that.”

Song of the (new) Moon 🐰🌕
i know vitamin c basically neutralizes adhd meds but lemonade good
yea lol
ADHD Medication information sheet
I have been struggling
For a long fucking time
with why my adderall was having such uneven effects and varying efficacy
and the weird pattern of what made it work and not work and if it was building up in my system or not
and fucking nobody told me I shouldn’t drink a glass of Kool-Aid to take the pills with
or eat fucking Pop-Tarts or Life cereal
this is the most useful information I have ever received from tubr and it seems to be confirmed by several other places upon searching
so this actually should be spread like wildfire like actually
Me reading this realizing tunglr dawt kom gave me more information about my medication than MYDOCTORRRRRSSSSSS MYYYYYYYY FUCKENNNNN DOCTORSSSSS PLURAL MULTIPLE DOCTORSSSSSSSS
Reblogging to spread this ridiculously important info
Generally speaking, your doctors actually may not know these things. This is the kind of stuff to ask your pharmacist about.
Ok what the actual fuck , why does nobody tell you this like , wtf
Citric Acid is added to A LOT of food items as a preservative and flavoring agent. Things you may not even consider having it. Check ingredient labels on everything!!!❤️
PS: Citrus affects SO MANY other drugs as well. Check your info sheet, or go online for contraindications and drug reaction info.
**For those saying this is misinformation: citrus DOES render some meds ineffective. I have to even disclose this to owners that give their dogs fruit treats ( just like milk products affecting some meds too). Keep in mind a lot of the meds I’m dispensing for veterinary use ARE ALSO originally used for human patients (vet industry does a lot of off label use).
When in doubt, talk to your prescribing physician. Then, if still in doubt, talk to your pharmacist.
Be aware that a lot of this stuff is 1. Still actively being studied; and 2. Dependent on a variety of factors, including dosages and genetics.
Also, neutralize is a rather hyperbolic choice of word. Current studies indicate that some fruits and fruit juices can reduce the efficacy of certain drugs. Also for some drugs it actually causes an inverse reaction where it results in too much of the drug entering the bloodstream, thereby causing toxicity.
By FDA graphic by Michael J. Ermarth - Author; Kaidor - Vectorization. - Own work based on: Grapefruit Juice and Medicine May Not Mix, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=122098363
(Yes the above image is about grapefruit juice. Grapefruit happens to be the fruit this interaction was first discovered with and the one currently most studied.)
To suggest that a glass of orange juice can completely negate the affects of stimulant medication is disingenuous at best and downright misinformation at worst. It’d be more accurate to say that taking your meds with orange juice might make them less effective, thereby necessitating a higher dose for an equivalent effect than if you only ever drank water.
Finally, nothing I have found indicates it is the citric acid causing this effect. It seems to be a completely unrelated type of molecule, enzymes called furanocoumarins. These enzymes seem to bind to certain enzymes in the liver and/or intestines (Cytochrome P450) which in turn can — again, increase or decrease depending on the drug — affect how readily some medications are absorbed into the body.
That said, I’m no chemist, much less a doctor. Frankly a lot of the technical and detailed scientific explanations sailed right over my head. Bringing us back to the original point.
TL;DR - Talk to the people prescribing your medications and/or the people filling those prescriptions about any concerns you have about potential interactions between different drugs, your diet, or other lifestyle factors you suspect could be having an effect.
Anyone on the internet could be wrong, lying, or trying to sell you something. Especially so on one of the last remaining websites with any sense of anonymity. Double especially so in this, the era of AI slop.
Please talk to a real person in real life about this stuff.
Your health and molecules are too important not to seek out the best, most credible sources of information available to you. And if you’re taking ADHD meds, you definitely have a prescribing doctor who you are already paying (or paying the insurance to pay) to ask these questions to.
IF YOU SEE ANY PAINTING BY "EMILE CORSI" ON HERE, DO NOT REBLOG IT THINKING IT'S REAL AND FROM THE 1800s. IT IS AI-GENERATED AND EMILE CORSI IS NOT A HISTORICAL FIGURE

And if you love the vibes and wish you could find something similar painted by a real person, let me introduce you to John William Waterhouse, on whose work the AI was definitely trained:

Imagine being Rocky in your spaceship when the first errors begin and you realize that the predator is eating your fuel and you have absolutely no way to stop it. Imagine thinking that even after all this, the death of your crew, the unlikely partnership, the wild success, the almost self sacrifice, you're never actually going to make it home. Everyone you love is going to die a slow and painful death.
Or almost everyone. The only bright spark is the friend you made along the way, the one you gave just enough fuel to make it home. You have to hope that he's not in the same predicament, but you know that his ship is made of strange material that could resist the amoeba better. You couldn't save your own world, but you could save his, and maybe that was all you could ever do.
You settle in, you make peace, as Grace would say, and just as you lay down you hear an impossible sound. A sound you think at first you might be imagining. A sound that is achingly familiar. A sound only possible because you insisted that you both make it out alive.
There is a knock at the door.
The thing is, even if you were lucky and your parents taught you how to clean, they probably didn't teach you how to clean the stuff you clean stuff with, like brushes, mops, sponges, rags, and so on. Or how to clean your cleaning appliances, like a dish washer, clothes washing machine, and clothes dryer and its ducts (if you have a ducted dryer), or a carpet cleaner, vacuum, Or how to clean up clean messes, like spilled bleach or detergent.
My parents threw away all of these things (even the vacuum cleaners and the dryer) when they got too dirty to function, because no one even told them THAT they could be cleaned. Cost them thousands of dollars over the years.
All I'm saying is that cleaning is not intuitive, and not knowing how to clean is not a moral failing, but it is something you can learn.
I'm going to reblog this post with resources for learning how to clean things and how to clean cleaning things (I'm not at my desk at the moment). If you have any favorites, please feel free to add them in too!
I like this video because it does a great job of introducing the basic foundations of house cleaning (and because he doesn't use bleach, which is a common allergy in addition to being awful to inhale). He also talks a little about how to clean a vacuum. And why you shouldn't put grease from your pots and pans down the sink drain. I also love that he mentions that different houses and different people have different needs and different versions of what clean and cleaning looks like.
He doesn't mention though that the toilet seat comes off. I take my toilet seat off to clean under the hinges and clean the seat more thoroughly once a quarter.
This is another video from the same guy about cleaning and depression. This advice, especially at the beginning, can feel really really difficult and oppressive to hear. However, I find that it's generally pretty solid. But I'm autistic and so is he, so that gets a massive Your Mileage May Vary stamp on it.
I have a favorite part of this video. It's from 10:52 to 12:36. I think we could all use to hear that. There's a HEFTY pause after that one. I promise the narration does come back.
I'm also going to recommend KC Davis' book "How To Keep House While Drowning"
This is a pair of videos about how to correctly load and use a dish washer.
The first one is a quick 1 minute 30 second overview on loading. I can't find the exact video I'm looking for, so consider this a substitute for that. If I can find the one I'm looking for, I'll swap it in.
The second is a half hour deep dive on dishwashers and detergents. The short form of that is you shouldn't need to pre-rinse anything, detergent pods are overpriced and can cause problems, some dishwashers have a filter in the bottom that needs to be cleaned (but most don't), run your sink until the water is HOT before starting your dish washer, and put a little detergent in the pre-rinse dispenser when you're washing extra dirty dishes (or on the inside of the door if your dishwasher doesn't have a pre-rinse dispenser).
Favorite Scrub Brushes + How to Clean Them. The right tools for cleaning tasks make all the difference! Scrub brushes are great tools and it
Here's a blog post about scrubbing brushes and how to clean them.
And a video for all cleaning tools, including scrub brushes. This video does use bleach. I'll try to find some alternatives to that.
How to clean a front load washer (with bleach). This should be done monthly or every time you wash really soiled clothes.
With expert tips and tricks for all types of washers.
How to clean a top loader (without the removable agitator thing). This should be done every 1-3 months depending on you unit, or every time you wash really soiled clothes.
Regular cleaning of a top-load washing machine will prolong the life of the appliance and leave your laundry cleaner and brighter.
How to clean a top loader (with the removable agitator thing). This should be done every month, or every time you wash really soiled clothes.
This video is for pet owners.
These carpet brushes are a LIFE SAVER if you have dogs. This thing allows me to go from vacuuming about 4 square feet before my vacuum is full to vacuuming half the living room (I don't vacuum often enough. You should vacuum weekly, and I just can't.). I have to unclog the vacuum less often. It fluffs up some of the flat spots in the carpet. And I also use the brush to shampoo my rugs in the spring.
A spot cleaner (or a carpet cleaner with a spot cleaner attachment) is another life saver, ESPECIALLY if you can afford to splurge on a heated one. I see them at Goodwill or at yard sales occasionally, and they're worth picking up. The shark one in the video is great too.
This channel is gold. There's tutorials for cleaning EVERYTHING on there. Just go subscribe!
Gonna throw another potential resource at the end of this very long list, which may be potentially helpful for others like me who loathe videos. It's... the weirdest thing that has genuinely been helpful to me in housekeeping. Absolutely full of useful advice, and bizarrely still relevant in large part. (Though, caveat, research ANYTHING to do with chemicals or cleaning products more complicated than vinegar + lemon + water for modern information.)
It's America's Housekeeping Book (1941). Available for free download on the Internet Archive. (Large PDF file at the link here).
The LISTS y'all. The step by step lists. The emphasis on efficiency and arranging spaces for the least resistance possible. The basic concept of "take a tray or basket into a room when you are tidying up so you can put things that belong elsewhere on it and take them out LATER in ONE GO".
My ADHD-having ass could cry.

Not to take over the post, but I wonder if that's true for other illnesses and chronic conditions...
Certainly often is. Telling patients to optimize their entire lifestyle, lose weight, get rid of all their bad habits and come back if the problem persists is a good way to get them out of your office for a good while and not have to do your job as a doctor.
#bingo. migraines start WAY before most people realize #many migraine sufferers don't even know about the prodrome or don't understand it very well #(because their doctors don't understand it/don't explain to them) #prodrome can have different symptoms than the main migraine phase #and if can last a very long time before the pain and other severe highly noticeable symptoms appear #one of my symptoms is craving food but hating water/finding it difficult to drink#anyone would say 'oh you get migraines because you're dehydrated' #naw I am a BIG water drinker. I am an extremely well hydrated person #the only time I stop drinking regularly is when I already have a migraine! #because for some reason one of my symptoms is 'water is disgusting' #(I can manage to drink some gatorade or flavoured sparkling water during my migraines and that's about it) #there are so so so many things like this #sleep is another huge one. migraines cause sleep disruption/insomnia for some people #and also acute fatigue that makes you take a nap for other people #sometimes both in succession #it's not your fault #I think people have trouble letting go of the idea of these kinds of triggers because it feels better to think it's your fault #than to think that it's our of your control #for some people there might be some factors you can control but for many people there just aren't
Peer-reviewed tags.
Water-aversion is a symptom I sometimes also get. But more often than that, I experience increased urination. So I drink tons, actually, and have to pee constantly.
Sometimes I have zero appetite and find it hard to eat and then right before the headache attack, I binge-eat.
Sleep issues too. I either sleep 8-9 hours and yet I'm exhausted all day or have trouble falling asleep.
The neurological symptoms associated with headache disorders can be very complex. The prodrome with sleep issues, depression, irritability, fatigue, nausea, brainfog, muscle stiffness etc. can go on for days at a time and make it really hard to function.
#migraine is yet another disorder among many that is so maligned as to be entirely misunderstood#did you know the neuropeptide CGRP is one of the neurochemicals associated with migraine.#did you also know tests administrating CGRP to migraineurs seems to be able to induce heache#did you also know elevated CGRP is associated with conditions like cardiac failure and sepsis#and besides this neuropeptide's vasodilator effect it Does play a function in nociception#so if you. say. have a disorder where your brain pumps out large amounts of CGRP and your receptors are sensitized to it. you just Suffer#besides that being why prodrome and postdrome happen (the neurochemical cascade on your body takes time to build up then wind down)#the good news is we know this now and it's why most modern migraine preventative & abortives are CGRP-related#gepants (or CGRP receptor anatagonists) are now first-line therapies for both maintenance and rescue care#alongside botox for chronic migraine (which also has an effect on CGRP receptors!)#all of this to add the additional hope that things have sucked and are hard for migraineurs.#for instance: the first-line treatments are prohibitively expensive and strongly regulated despite poor abuse potential#the wild thing with something like nurtec or ubrelvy is that it has no pain relief potential *unless* you're having a migraine#but things are changing. the care standard is in fact exactly as the post characterizes.#lifestyle changes aren't the standard anymore and disruptions in schedule are now rightfully being treated as symptoms#it's worth mentioning if your doctor doesn't you should absolutely consider a second opinion. doctors can be wrong or just suck!#migraine#disability#favourites#chronic illness#healthcare#ableism#(specifically in the whole “you need to micromanage your life”-thing. you understand.)
and that's the teaaa
Migranes are the weirdest shit ever, a couple of times in the aura phase I have had transient APHASIA! Meaning that I lose most of my language abilities. The times it has happened I have struggled or been unable to understand people, I know that they said something but I don't know what. I struggle to string together a sentence and won't know if I've successfully said anything. I'll look at text and just not know what it means. It's terrifying!
I've also had (I believe although I can't know for sure) migraines that don't present as headaches, migraines that affect random parts of my body but not the head. Like a stomach migraine.
It's very much possible to have a migraine without the head pain. The head pain is just one of the many neurological symptoms you can get with the disorder. I suspect I frequently had abdominal migraine as a kid.
I haven't had any headaches in over 2 weeks (shout-out to verapamil!) and I genuinely find it so much easier to speak/form coherent sentences. It was for sure affecting my language abilities.
Things in the Project Hail Mary book that aren't in the movie that I think are delightful
Spoilers under the cut for the book
Eva and Grace’s dynamic is so important to me. They’re in love platonically. Like, that’s not a common dynamic. She put the way he likes his coffee into the ship’s computer. He follows her around like a puppy. In the book, she cracks jokes with him and him only. She cares about his opinion. He was the only one she asked about the coma gene, wondering if it was worth it.
He’s her best friend, and she doesn’t even know it. They’re so close, that in the book, people think they’re sleeping together, and poor Grace is so confused because he thought that was his platonic work wife, wdym people think we’re sleeping together, that’s my person that I crack jokes with and then she glares at me because they’re not funny.
She’s softer with him than anybody else and is only ever vulnerable around him. We see in the movie, he’s the only one who ever gets her to smile, and sometimes even laugh, and then she serenades all of them, but mainly him, and he stares at her with those big, shiny eyes so lovingly, and she points at him when she sings, “everything’s gonna be alright”, and then she gives him those eyes, so loving.
And then she’s trying to stop herself from crying when she’s sending him away because, against her will, he’s become her person, and somewhere along the way, she’s become his, and they will have forever ended this relationship on bad terms, and nothing can fix that.
It’s a platonic tragedy. It’s a platonic love story. This is something we don’t get often, or, like, ever, and it’s deep and it’s tragic and it’s sad.
But even after, Eva’s still taking care of him. Packing clothes she knew would bring him comfort. Programming the ship to know how he likes his coffee. And Grace is still watching out for her, speaking to her directly in his video logs, with that same lopsided smile he used to throw her way.
He uses Rocky’s sign for goodbye, and she uses it back, and how did this book and movie give us such a deep platonic friendship because, guys, this NEVER HAPPENS.
Eva and Grace, the platonic male/female friendship of all time.

and rockys like: grace is the bravest person ive ever met. he is brave and selfless in ways he cannot see yet and if he will not tell himself that then i will say it for him
