you hate me a little, don't you?

Tired, wary, bloodshot eyes moved to the Senju, and Kakuzu found himself pausing for a thoughtful moment before responding. His voice was rough, his speech a bit slurredโ he was still getting used to speaking around the changes Earth Grudge Fear had wrought on his body.
โ... a little. Though I hate you less than I did six months ago.โ
โI hated you for leaving me alive after our fight,โ he muttered. โBut you weren't the one who sent me on that assassination mission. You weren't the one who locked me up when I came back ssstill breathing. That hatred was better directed at Takigakureโs elders.โ

The Hokage felt a shiver run down his spine.
"You were sent to die," he whispered. "And when you didn't, they punished you for surviving." His voice stayed calm, but it carried a streak of heaviness. He had become someone's undoing without meaning to, a symbol of someone's failure.
"I understand why you hated me. I was the symbol of that impossible task," he said, his expression gentler than before. He didn't want to pity Kakuzu, because the man in front of him wasn't a victim. He was someone who endured.
"But you endured what they did to youโฆ And I'm glad you did," he said, watching Kakuzu's expression carefully. He didn't recognize any evil intent in this man's green eyes. He understood his pain, in a way only another shinobi of their time could.
