// sudden realization that considering how long people have been traveling the seas, Vithren is thousands of years old--
“Sometimes, to trust / the sea isn’t so much the point, anymore, as to know— / without minding it—the sea’s indifference.”
— Carl Phillips, from “Said the Horse to the Light”, Pale Colors in a Tall Field

They're dozing after a morning swim, lounging in the netting stretched between the bows of the Tide Dancer. The boat's gentle rocking is quite quickly lulling them to sleep (they've dropped their book on their face more than once and finally just let it rest on their chest as they fold their arms behind their head).
If anyone wants to know what a leopard seal sounds like 🦷🩸
Leopard Seals are what happens when god needs a lizard and all he has is a mammal
I'd recommend turning the sound on. The seal is not screaming. It's not very loud at all, actually, but the noise it's making is Much Worse.

Irina’s muscles tensed as she heard someone approach; immediately relaxing with her brow twitching in annoyance. Edgelord.
“I just might,” she mused back, turning her head just enough to look at him; a faint ray of light catching her eye to reveal an unnatural, artificial orange glint. “I wouldn’t be missed. Hard to miss someone who doesn’t legally exist.”
Her cybernetics would ensure she would sink like a stone; swimming was not something she was particularly good at. “Figure my body would only pollute the sea, though. Not the ocean’s fault I am the way I am. Ah well…”
Leaning back on her hands, she huffed. “And why are you out here? I take your spot, or something?”
Drama queen.
The glint of amber light from her eyes took them by surprise, but it didn’t show on their face. They squinted as they drew a deeper breath through the nose: under the scent of ocean air, he could smell... metal, plastic, the heat of electronics. Much stronger than if she'd just had a cell phone on her.
Was part of her artificial?
What new hell were the humans inflicting on eachother now?
"The sea would thank you for your consideration, then. Salt water and circuitry don't mix, in my experience. If you're that determined, I'm sure you'll find another way."
They gestured to the dark expanse of water, where a distant ship light could be seen a ways away.
"I was going home," they said, resting their hands on their hips. "There's not usually anyone else out here this late."
The night was pitch black, the moon and stars cloaked behind overcast as Irina stared out into the darkness. Sitting on the edge of the dock, she listened to the waves crashing.
What would it be like, she wondered silently, to sink to the bottom of the sea? Alone and forgotten?
Life had been going poorly—it wasn’t exactly sunshine and roses, of course, but…
It felt like her efforts were wasted. It seemed like everything she did to try and expose VentureTech failed. People talked about it for a few weeks, then nothing.
A heavy sigh. She closed her eyes and simply listened to the waves and the creaking of wood.
Vithren's catamaran was anchored a ways out from the shore. There was no dinghy to use to get back to it; he'd just swim. Any company that he might have been fooling around with was never taken back to his boat anyway.Â
His footsteps down the dock were quiet, all but drowned out by the crash of the water below. He paused at the sight of something at the end of it, though: a woman sitting on the edge of the wood. He drew closer, noting the sigh and deciding he didn't exactly care.
He paused behind her.
“... are you going to jump in or are you going to just sit there?” he said.

Vithren knew what it felt like to have someone's eyes on them. It didn’t incite any anxiety or paranoia in them though; they simply turned their head until they caught a pair of unblinking eyes watching them. They expected her to look away, not to pose a question.Â
What were they doing before? They folded their arms.
“That's none of your business, is it?”
Sabotaging a few boats is what they'd been doing, but that was neither here nor there.

Ten minutes ago, this human had been something else entirely. The deity had been quite surprised to see him shift forms as he had; humans weren't known for that and never had been. He'd been watching when the stranger stopped and started wading in the surf, by all means looking like he was looking for something.Â
The guess was right, judging by the grouchy reply. As always, humans never seemed to take well to getting wet.Â
“Really? I thought you were squinting at the water for the hell of it,” they said with a raised eyebrow. “Care to share what it is you're looking for or is that a secret?”
Four eyes were better than two, after all.
The water of the beach has always been nice and cool. She didn't visit it often, not even five years ago, but when she did, she'd always go exclusively to dip her feet in the water. It often helped if she had a lot on the mind... Or just needed a nice break. Either way, she does exactly that, sitting on a nearby pier and dipping her feet into the water. Her mind's been a hellscape lately and she needs to clear it. At least just a little bit.
Something… wasn't right. Not with the water (not entirely), but there was something in the water that was making their spine prickle. The leopard seal currently weaving through the pilings under the dock came to a stop and looked up at the structure. There was nothing new except the pair of feet dangling in the water, as people often did. That was where they were getting the “off” feeling from.Â
They swam upward until their spotted head broke the surface of the water, and they studied the woman with a pair of blue cetacean eyes that looked utterly alien on a seal. In a blink, their form shifted from a sleek seal to something more humanoid with long silvery hair and blue and white skin.Â
“What do you think you're doing?” They growled. “Your presence taints this place.”
