I do want to say: it’s not a mystery why RR decided to make Shane Japanese despite clearly having no interest in exploring what that meant for the character. The reason she did this is because she was buying into fetishized racial stereotypes about the appearances of Japanese men. In the books, she says that Shane is small, that he’s smooth without body hair, that he looks pretty and young; these are not necessarily things that are true about Asian men. Most of the Japanese men in my family are not only capable of growing beards (unlike Shane), but have pretty impressive ones. These described traits are true of the stereotypical ideal of Japanese men in western culture, though, and that’s where her desire for Shane to be Japanese came from. Racist western stereotypes that co-opt Asian aesthetics (that are often inaccurate in the first place!!) largely for the sake of titillation.

Hey guys you should totally get into this thing i like. Yeah it's mid at best. It also aged poorly. You'll get nothing out of it at all. You'll like the idea of it more than the actual thing. But at least only takes half your natural lifespan to finish it
