the other thing is when Sam says "we don't need to win" he's saying that because his act of rejecting being Lucifer's vessel isn't an action against Lucifer, but it still is why Lucifer is decaying. all the time in the Cage and it doesn't last. Lucifer existing outside of Sam's body and it won't last. Sam doesn't need to win. he just needs nothing to last forever. and nothing does. that's something Lucifer can never control.
