I honestly feel like nobody in lotr mentions how fucking weird Legolas is. He stays up pacing the floor and singing to himself in the dead of night. He deadass stares straight into the tree line in the absolute pitch black when no one else can see anything. He yells goodbye to a river he has heard about in songs. He's so strange and not one character mentions it AT ALL. I absolutely love him.
i don't remember the books so well, what is legolas' personality like in them? all i remember is tht the books and movie where massively different?
Oh my dear anon. I could go on about book Legolas for hours.
Book Legolas is a sassy little sh*t who skips on the surface of the snow when everyone else is drowning in it up to their waists and carrying the four hobbits. Book Legolas sleeps with his eyes open. He watches Aragorn throw himself to the groud and listen to the sound of running horses, only to say afterwards, “yeah, there are a hundred and five of them, they’re all blond and they all have spears nbd“. Book Legolas cries that Gollum escaped grom Mirkwood right after everyone was like, “phew, it’s good that Thranduil’s elves keep an eye on him, what could go wrong???“. He screams all the time, and occasionally drops his bow too. He kills a warg, shooting it right in the throat with a burning arrow. Book Legolas is a trees stan. Book Legolas walk away singing “To the Sea! To the Sea!“. Book Legolas is not afraid of zombies, thank you very much. He addreses his friends “children“, even though he is probably the youngest elf in Middle-Earth that we know of. And of course, book Legolas takes none of your bs, builds his own grey boat because who says he can’t sail on his own ship right, packs his best friend and shows up in Valinor 120 years late with Starbucks and a dwarf.
Book Legolas is also a history nerd and a fantastic singer.
Book Legolas is a theatre kid.
I 100% adore the Lord of the Rings movies, but the fact is that the Arwen-Is-Dying-Because-Ring-Magic plotline makes zero sense by the lore (if I’m wrong please correct me I’d love to learn). Don’t get me wrong, it works great for the movie, brilliant, in fact, but it doesn’t really make much sense in book logic. Why would Arwen’s fate be tied to the Ring? If she’s mortal now she can’t Fade, and if she’s still Elvish there’s no reason why it should affect her more than anyone else.
BUT, I was watching the extended scene where Aragorn looks into the Palantir and Sauron speaks to him in Black Speech and shows him pictures of a dead Arwen and smashes the Evenstar (Which is a whole other The-Books-Call-Bullshit shebang), and I came up with my own in-universe explanation.
Sauron: *Chilling in Mordor*
An Orc of some kind: My Lord Mairon (Because THAT is what they would call him), the spies have come back from Rivendell.
Sauron: Show me.
Magic Evil Spy: *Shows Sauron the image of a mortal man of the race of Numenor making out with an Elf lady who looks suspiciously familiar…*
Sauron: OH HELL NO!
Evil Spy: Indeed, Master. The Heir of Isildur lives.
Sauron: Get rid of her, now.
Evil Spy: Right away, Mast- her?
Sauron: Yes! Yes yes yes, I don’t care what it takes, get her out of here.
Evil Spy: My Lord, but surely, Isildur’s heir-?
Sauron: Do not harm that man, you hear me? Do not lay a finger on him until she is taken care of.
Evil Spy:
Evil Spy: Are you sure-?
Sauron: Was there a dog?
Spy: A dog, Master?
Sauron: Yes, yes, a dog, a big one.
Spy: Not that I could see, no.
Sauron: Oh well thank Eru for that, at least.
Spy: Are you feeling ill, Master?
Sauron: No, and I’d like to keep it that way. Arwen annihilation is priority number one, ok? And don’t you lay a finger on her man until I say so, got it?
Spy: Alright then…
Sauron, still looking at the image: HE’S GOT THE RING OF FELAGUND!!!
Spy:
Sauron: KILL HER KILL HER KILL HER KILL HER KILL HER RIGHT NOW!

Imagine going on a cross country trip to share the (mildly embarrassing) news with an adjacent king that your guards lost a prisoner, but when you get there- there’s actually a huge crowd of people who all get called into a massive Super Important Meeting. And the prisoner (who you thought wasn’t like That Big of a deal) gets brought up, and everyone’s talking about how great your kingdoms security is, and how important it is that he’s locked up, and you’re just sitting there sweating buckets. And you have to stand up in front of Everybody and tell them ‘actually he escaped and had been gone for months’. While everyone looks at you with the most disappointed faces you’ve ever seen. What a loser.
And Then you have to go on an even Longer trip with all of these people who’s first impression of you was some cringefail sweaty loser who can’t even keep track of one (1) guy.
No wonder Legolas was showing off every chance he got, he was trying to bring his reputation up from like -100
not only that but two of the guys at the meeting very famously escaped from your dungeon about fifty years ago. because you were busy partying.
It's funny hearing Galadriel say in the FotR prologue 'nine rings were gifted to the race of men who above all else desire power' with barely laced contempt because like girl I've read the Silmarillion. I know what your family did over shiny rocks.
ok little miss “I do not deny that my heart has greatly desired this” (via @freenarnian)
Perhaps we overlook the potential for Noldorin snobbery about the craftsmanship of the said rings. Or about the desires of mens’ hearts. “You desire power? Pah! WE only go to war over shiny objects. Well-made shiny objects, not that blah, boring gold ring.”
Okay but imagine being Gimli son of Gloin from the line of Durin, used to last names being given out as badges of honor for great deeds, like Oakenshield. And then you’re in a fellowship of good, honest people unlikely to try to steal the ring with a guy named Took. And he’s related to an infamous burglar your dad used to tell you stories about as a child. I’d be watching him like a hawk
They give the ring to the guy who apparently has a lot of bags? Cool. Whatever. But who is this THIEF
Gandalf: Hey Aragorn, now that we’ve caught Gollum, who should hold on to him.
Aragorn: I was thinking the wood elves.
Gandalf: You mean the ones that let a hobbit and 13 starving dwarves escape?
Aragorn: yeah.

Gimli & Legolas sketch that went too far
that theory that the Arkenstone is a Silmaril…it’s doubly implausible, but imagine if nobody knew. If the dwarves were guarded enough of their greatest treasure that…you wouldn’t even need to hide it from that many people, honestly. Mostly a few elves, and all wizards.
and then Bilbo sidles up to Gandalf like, “Thorin and all are holed up in the Mountain, but I think they’re being nuts, so I…kind of stole the Arkenstone, I think.” And (it’s been thousands of years since the light of the trees was doused save for the precious brilliance locked away in Feanor’s gems, since oaths and blood and war that raged until the skies cracked and the earth shattered, and the little people of the Shire have no memory of it at all) he pulls out a fucking Silmaril.
Gandalf: *spittake*
Gandalf: *hurriedly glances at Thranduil. the king of Mirkwood’s eyes shine with curiosity and greed, but not recognition, nor the terrible lust that overtook Feanor and his sons. right, right, he was never in Thingol’s court while the jewel that Luthien and Beren took was there. we’re good. we’re good for now*
Gandalf: That’s, uh, nice, Bilbo. Put it away, would you?
Gandalf, telepathically(?): EMERGENCY RINGBEARERS ONLY CONFAB NOW
Gandalf: [mental image of a goddam Silmaril in hobbit hands, labelled “thisfuckingrockagain.jpg”]
Galadriel, who watched 95% of her family slaughter everyone within 100 miles for several thousand years over these things, including each other and themselves: no.
Elrond, who was very nearly one of those people slaughtered, and did watch most of his town be killed before he and his twin were kidnapped for a while: Absolutely Fucking Not.
Gandalf: Apparently fucking yes. The legendary Arkenstone-
Galadriel: You’ve got to be kidding me.
Elrond: Thorin Oakenshield has a Silmaril right now?
Gandalf: No, no.
Gandalf: Bilbo stole it.
Elrond: *wordless sputtering*
Gandalf: @Galadriel [information packet: BilboBagginsoftheShire.pdf]
Galadriel: Oh yes, Belladonna’s boy, you were telling me about him last winter.
Galadriel: Btw, orc+warg army probably coming your way. Spotted it in the mirror last night. Thank goodness we dealt with Dol Goldur at least, huh?
Elrond: No fucking shit.
Gandalf @Gwaihir Windlord: hey, sorry to bother you again, I know it’s nearly mating season. but we have a situation again
Gandalf: [thisfuckingrockagain.jpg]
Gandalf: [oncomingorcwargarmy.jpg]
Gandalf: [flashbacktobadasseaglesinwarofwrathhinthint.mov]
I mean, given that Tolkien retconned “The Hobbit” so Bilbo’s little invisibility ring became an ancient piece of jewelry that controls minds and drives the mighty mad, one can at least understand why it seems plausible that the other shiny white gem that destroys empires and makes the mighty go mad with greed could be linked from his kid’s book to his gigantic early mythology in retrospect??
You know this actually explains a lot about why Gandalf didn’t immediately raise the alarm about Bilbo’s ring out of an abundance of caution. I mean, what are the odds, what are the fucking odds, that this one little hobbit stole both a Silmaril and the Ring of Power? Like, you are Gandalf the Grey and you have already dealt with the heart attack to end all heart attacks because this little innocent fool stole a world war inspiring artifact once. You still get flashbacks every time Bilbo offers to show you something and have to employ all of your angel’s serenity and thousands of years of learned composure not start giBbERinG “ pleaseletitnotbeanotherartifactpleaseletitnotbeanotherartifact”. And then. AND THEN! One day he’s like, “hey Gandalf let me show you this neat ring I found back on our journey”. And on the inside a tiny part of you is screaming “nottheoneringnottheoneringnottheonering” while a more rational part of your brain assures you it could not possibly be the one- “It’s this plain gold ring that’s very precious to me and turns me invisible!”
AND THEN YOU FUCK OFF AND SEARCH THROUGH EVERY POSSIBLE TOME YOU CAN TO PROVE IT CAN’T REALLY BE THE RING OF POWER, SAURON’S RING OF POWER, THAT RING, THE ONE RING, LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE TOME, BEFORE FINALLY FUCKING ACKNOWLEDGING THAT THIS SHIT IS REALLY HAPPENING AGAIN
i would pay several hundred dabloons to see orlando bloom play a book-accurate legolas. i completely understand how they probably had to tone his character down or else he would’ve taken all the spotlight lol, but can you imagine orlando bloom fucking SCREAMING at the sight of a balrog
god willing someday I will write a fic where Feanor gets to groundhog day the swearing of the oath. except instead of unswearing it he keeps thinking that if he just adjusts the wording a little bit it’ll all work out perfectly
@cuarthol yes perfect thank you exactly this
Feanor: Be he foe or friend, be he foul or clean, brood of Morgoth or bright Vala, Elda or Maia or Aftercomer, Man yet unborn upon Middle-earth, neither law, nor love, nor league of swords, dread nor danger, not Doom itself, shall defend him from Fëanor, and Fëanor's kin, whoso hideth or hoardeth, or in hand taketh -- lest he taketh with the purpose of surrendering to us -- or afar casteth -- lest 'tis, like, a "ey, catch this" sort of situation whereupon they cast it in our own direction-- a Silmaril. I shall now take a moment to elucidate that we work on a priority-basis, starting from the greatest foes to the least, so that in a hypothetical situation in which both Morgoth and a lesser foe are both in possession of some number of Silmarils we are duty-bound to address Morgoth first and the lesser foe second, even if the latter task seems more easily accomplishable. On that note I should also like to make clear that children below the age of fifty are considered noncombatants and ought not be cast aside to die in the woods. In a hypothetical situation where our black deeds have left us unworthy to touch the stones will also swear we shall wear proper PPE, including thick leather gloves and goggles, if we come to possess them. This swear we all: death we will deal him ere Day's ending, woe unto world's end! Our word hear thou, Eru Allfather! To the everlasting Darkness doom us if our deed faileth. On the holy mountain hear in witness, and our vow remember, Manwë and Varda!
SoF: ...
Feanor: On second thought I think I'm taking the Darkness thing out--
Feanor: /scribbling notes, mumbling to himself, oblivious to the riled-up mob around them/
Celegorm: /nudging him with his foot/ Um.. dad?
Feanor: Not now, turkey, daddy's thinking.
Fëanor: Let's move on to page 54, paragraph 4.
Manwë: Okay.
Fëanor: See where it says "shall be slain?"
Manwë: No.
Fëanor: Do you have the July 16 revision or the August 1?
Manwë: July.
Fëanor: I'm working from the August 1 revision with Mandos' notes. Here, look. Should this say "shall be slain by us?" For clarity?
Manwë: Sigh. It should say "shall be slain by the named signatories of this oath."
Fëanor: Perfect! Now on page 55...
I love how variable the Wood Elves methods of dealing with prisoners are. Because on the one hand, Thorin and Co got thrown into the basement for fucking up their parties and petty assholery, but on the other hand Gollum got to go on walks because they thought he would like sunlight.
So where on this scale would Maglor fall?
Like, if the Wood Elves caught Maglor would he end up their new pet minstrel or would he be locked away for eternity? Or would Thranduil write Elrond and tell him to come pick up his beach cryptid dad?
I feel like all of these are possibilities depending on Thranduil’s current level of intoxication and how amusing he would find any given punishment.
What is Third Age Maglor to Elrond if not his own Frank Gallagher he occasionally gets letters about from other kingdoms to come and collect him?
Maglor is like my friend’s horse that was really good at escaping the fence. Everyone in her town knew where she worked so they would just call and report on the horse every time someone saw it. Eventually the messages would end with “someone tied him to a tree on ___ road”
So Elrond just gets letters like “I know I promised I would keep an eye on him, but he’s slipped past the Havens and gone inland” & “the Dunedain report a singer in the trees” & “we saw him in the mountains but he got away, sorry dad” & “Haldir spotted something to the north of Lorien” & “Our cousin crossed the Nimrondel on a homemade pontoon, please control him” & “Maglor harassing local spider population in Greenwood” until finally it ends with a letter from Thranduil that says “Your crypid is tied to a tree. Come get him before Legolas gets attached.”
Elrond drags him back to Rivendell and says “this time you STAY” but within a few months he’s missing again, off to visit his new buddy Legolas.
Maglor and Legolas is the friendship I didn’t know I wanted, but it’s the friendship we deserve
@gossip-girl-of-middle-earth I can’t believe you left this in the tags. You’re cracking me up 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Maglor rocks up to Imladris with his new best friend and Elrond is NOT impressed, particularly not when Maglor explains that Legolas has the best qualities of his brothers and therefore Maglor MUST defend him. No questions asked.
Maglor: I didn’t kidnap him. He came willingly.
Elrond: Dad. Dad I went willingly, BECAUSE THE ALTERNATIVE WAS DYING.
Maglor: Also his dad won’t tell him about his mother, but I know you knew his mother, so I brought him here to talk to you.
Elrond, internally struggling with the idea of a child who wants to hear about their absent parent: ….
Legolas: þulion Elerondo
Maglor: I’m teaching him proper elvish. His accent was atrocious.
Elrond: … Put that back where it came from or so help me…
I had to do this
