Alright lets talk about batman. I was watching scenes from Batman the animated series, and I was finally able to out into words why I think none of the live action batman movies have ever really felt like Batman. I can’t stand the Christopher Nolan trilogy, its copganda and also the suit looks stupid, but there’s more to it than that. That batman doesn’t feel motivated by a love for his fellow man, he feels motivated by hate. They all do, to some extent, but especially in those films batman is acting as a hero instead of a villain not because he wants to, but some perceived sense of duty. Bruce becomes the bat not because he feels some moral responsibility to, some glorious purpose he is mandated to pursue that he can then shed at the earliest opportunity to fake his death, but because he loves people so much that he wants to do everything he can to stop us from hurting each other. Batman is, at his heart, not doing this because he hates bad guys and wants to hurt them. He’s doing this because he loves people so much that he wants to stop them from hurting each other, and to choose the better path. It’s why Superman is his hero, his beat friend. He’s the man he wants to be, the icon of heroism, the man who is choosing the better path simply because he can, because he wants to. Harvey Dent, after everything, he chooses to love Harvey Dent and try to help him overcome his pain. He refuses to kill the Joker because even though he chooses to be a monster, he believes he can choose to be a better man. We all know Mr. Freeze, and how Batman does the thing a good man would do in his position. Batman does what he does because he loves, and any expression of batman contrary to this will never be my batman.
