me, watching a battle scene: please not the horses. leave them alone. they did nothing wrong. they are the only innocent ones. they donāt deserve this.
HEY.
things i always keep in my backpack:Ā
the bible (king james edition)
a copy of the U.S. consitution
a copy of my schoolās current rulebook
i do this so that whenever someone at school tries to make a point and then defends it by sayingĀ āitās in the constitution!ā orĀ āitās from the bible!ā or something else along those lines, i can pull out my own copy and say,Ā āwhere exactly does it say that?ā
also itās just great to confuse people by pulling a fucking book of school rules out of nowhere in order to discuss what qualifies as a dresscode violation.
today during lunch a kid and i were debating the gender of god and he saidĀ āgodās a man in the bibleā and i saidĀ āiām pretty sure god is technically nonbinary or genderfluid, but let me check thatā and i unzipped my backpack and the boy saidĀ āwhatās she doing?ā and my friend repliedĀ āsheās getting her bibleā and iām not sure how he felt when i set it down on the lunch table and flipped open to genesis but i definitely felt amazing.

every day i am percievedā¢ļø
There is a reason for this though!
The original tweet summarizes it pretty well. Fanfic tends to be popular among certain types of neurodivergent people (aka people most likely to read excessively as a child, and have burnout as an adult) for the same reasons that we tend to hyperfixateāneurochemical signaling (I hope Iām using that phrase correctly). What I mean is, for people who are really dependent on changes in dopamine/serotonin/neurotransmitter levels, who have low levels or wonky neural reward systems (perhaps the most common types of neurodivergence)ā¦people like us rely on dependable external sources of those neurochemicals. In order to function, we spend a lot of our free time trying to level out our brain chemistry using things that can reliably bring us a steady stream of joyful moments (rewards) without costing too much of the mental effort that is already in short supply.Ā
significantly:Ā the investment of reading has to be balanced with a steady āreturn on investmentāāand this return has to start fairly quickly. because again, we donāt have a lot of attention/energy to invest on tiring things. we have perpetual ālow batteriesā in that regard.
that doesnāt mean these stories are āsimple,ā or that they lack complexity or valueāonly that the reward has to come in short regular intervals, and it has to have a low āupfront cost.āĀ which is why fanfic stories are so perfectly formulated for neurodivergent readersāthey are often beautifully written, but skip a lot of the upfront costs (of introducing new characters, of world-building, of getting the audience emotionally connected to the story elements).
the nature of fanfiction is that the reader has a pre-existing relationship with this world and these characters. thatācombined with the shorter average length of ficsāmeans that fan fics very quickly start ārewardingā the reader in a way that traditional fiction struggles to. thatās not a bad thing! and maybe itās something more traditionally published writers should be paying attention to.
Fanfic, as a genre, has been uniquely helpful and accessible to many neurodivergent readers who would otherwise struggle to immerse themselves in stories. Iām glad so many of you have found a way to love and enjoy reading again! The important thing is that you are spending time inside stories you loveāthe way those stories are published or presented to the world is just one detail.
*holds your hand* no, weāre ALL bitches
I used to devour books as a kid, could read a 400 page book in one day. I read at school, during lunch break, while walking home, while eating, before sleep, just every moment I could. Then I hit twenties and I just canāt read like that anymore. I now have a short attention span, have to reread paragraphs, and oftentimes I get to the end of a page only to realize that I have no idea what I just read. So reading books became a chore. Reading fanfiction is much easier, though sometimes my attention drifts even when reading them.
I did the same thing as a kid, and interestingly enough I found that as my overall level of stress and daily discomfort improved, I spent a lot less time reading. Over time Iāve realized that the type of reading habits described aboveāspending every free moment of my day reading, at the cost of everything elseāthat was a maladaptive coping mechanism.
As a kid, I didnāt read just bc I chose to. I read bc I couldnāt choose anything else. I had no control over my environment, I was constantly overwhelmed, overstimulated, unhappy and isolated. I didnāt have much internet access, certainly not in class, so immersing myself in printed things was my only escape option. Thatās what it was all aboutāescaping.
In hindsight, a big reason I was able to concentrate on longer fiction when I was younger was bc I didnāt have that many options. I didnāt have access to wifi during school hours, and running out of reading material was a huge risk (bc engaging & being aware of my environment was just that painful). Given that it took a large word count to distract myself consistently through the day, reading large books made more sense. When I was a kid, long fiction offered a better āpayoffā, the way fanfiction does now.
That is to say: I chose books for many of the same reasons I later chose fanfiction.
The fact that my reading habits have changed has less to do with the fact my brain had changed, and more to do with the way my environment has changed. My brain has options now it didnāt have before. And it turns out, fanfic is a pretty useful option. Iām gradually transitioning to reading more long & traditionally published fiction, but Iāll never forget that fanfic writers were there when I needed different options. Iāll never forget how much that genre helped (and still helps!) when I was struggling.
I read The Lord of the Rings trilogy in a week in elementary school. Now I donāt pick up a book more than once or twice a month at the best of times

Ok Iāve just gained appreciation for this song.
āKing Chadā Murales created by artist Nikkolas Smith in honor and memory of Chadwick Boseman
āThis one is special. My King Chad tribute is now on a wall on display at Downtown Disney. š¾ It is a full circle moment for me: my final two projects as a Disney Imagineer last summer were working on the Childrenās Hospital project and the Avengers Campus. To millions of kids, T'Challa was a legend larger than life, and there was no one more worthy to fill those shoes than Chadwick Boseman. Iām so thankful to be able to honor Chadwickās life and purpose in this way.āĀ

Disneyland unveiled a Chadwick Boseman mural in its Downtown Disney shopping district. The artwork from Nikkolas Smith shows the late Marvel star giving the Wakanda salute to a young fan wearing a āBlack Pantherā mask. The child in the mural is wearing a hospital gown, to honor the late āBlack Pantherā star who visited children with cancer at St. Jude campus, while waging a private battle with the disease. The installation is titled, āKing Chad.ā (via Variety)

Chadwick Boseman would have been 44 years old today and as a tribute and remembrance, Disney/Marvel Studios updated the Black Panther intro.

hey! so for those of you who didnāt already know, i currently live in Japan, where same-sex marriage is not yet legal. tomorrow afternoon, the Japanese Diet is having a hearing concerning same-sex marriage, and theyāre āgauging interestā based on the viewership of the livestream. basically, if people donāt watch, theyāll just write off the issue as niche and avoid it for as long as possible.
iām posting about this here because, for ~some reason~, the hearing is to start at 1pm. on a regular thursday. when people are at work.
so, for those of you who will be awake at 1pm JST on thursday the 26th of november, i ask you to please contribute to the youtube live viewer count. iāll put the link in a reblog.
thanks in advance!
youtube live is here
