Hey, if anyone’s curious, this IS making a serious impact — this handbook was taught as standard practice for my EMT license course, as well as several other programs. A lot of new providers are being taught this as a matter of course.

@sinnsenke couldn't leave this in the tags
アオバト(White-bellied green-pigeon)
Your partner came back from the dead after being missing for decades. Every one of their friends who they went with ended up dying a horrible death.
Now, somehow, their entire mental health is based on the continued life and happiness of this fairground goldfish that they picked up.
Neither of you know the first thing about how to care for even a healthy fish. This fish has been poorly cared for, has multiple diseases and the person who handed it over explicitly didn't expect it to live nearly as long as it already has.
You're frantically googling how to set up a fish tank, where to buy fish food, can you even take a fish to the vet? Your partner wants you to know that they're happy they made it home and survived their horrific ordeal, but also that if anything happens to the fish then they're going to kill everyone on this planet and then themself.
You're honestly wondering if you're even helping the fish, or just prolonging its suffering, but your partner will only accept medical help for their many injuries or engage in basic self-care once they're confident that the fish is being looked after.
So you get a tank. You set up a filter and all that stuff. You learn way more than you ever wanted to know about water temperature and ph and nitrate levels. The fish is safe. You start to develop some affection for the little guy. Your partner begins to recover. The fish begins to recover.
Which is when you learn that in its 'healthy' state, the fish regularly refuses to sleep when tired, keeps begging for food that is obviously unhealthy for it (and struggling to eat the food that you do provide because “it tastes gross”), and continually tries to persuade your partner to take it out of its nice safe tank so it can go explore the wonderful world of Outside, where the slightest mishap will kill it instantly.
Your name is Adrian, and you kind of wants to strangle this fucking fish, statement.

I think the logic here is:
>we save people from fires
>fires can kill anyone, including queer people
>we also save queer people from fires
And in an age where paramedics legally refused to save the life of a trans car crash victim, that’s an important sentiment to state
Grabs a sharpie and adds “And Neither Do We”
Don’t worry, it’s there lol.

hi can you guys tell me your favorite marine organism
does anyone else give a fuck about ctenophores
Watched a documentary about abuse and advice one guy said to give children was, "Tell them that if someone is hurting them, to tell someone - and don't just tell one person. Tell as many people as possible, and keep telling as many people as possible until the abuse stops." and i really liked that
Bc so many ppl focus on the idea of telling A Trusted Adult, but even a well-meaning individual can fuck up and let abuse fall through the cracks or not know what to do
Whereas if a child tells LOADS of adults AND other kids, there's far less opportunity for an abuser to do damage control
Consistently telling their story and spreading it around disempowers the abuser to control and coerce the flow of information, or to utilise gaps and weaknesses in systems of reporting or welfare to isolate the child
Just really good advice. Not suprised I don't hear it more often.
You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.
Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go "I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]", that was a bit. What do you mean they're teaching kids a reading method that's tailored to produce this exact error?
Three cueing. Once you learn about it, a whole lot of very frustrating online discourse with US Americans makes so much sense 😭
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have
If you were taught to read with the three cueing method, and now struggle to read fluently, you can still learn to read properly!

If you're a teenager, you can still use this resource.
"if x-rays are safe why do technicians run and hide behind a shield" well if you ate one banana you would be fine. if you had to eat a banana for every single person who came through your practice every day for your entire career, you would probably not feel too good. kinda wild that many people are hung up on this.
to be fair the difference between "should you eat one (1) banana" vs "should you eat one banana every 10-15 minutes for 8 hours straight" is how you get studies like "aspartame causes cancer" so maybe we're kind of fuzzy on this sort of thing in general

I do generally try very hard to not be judgmental of owners when they make certain choices. Finances are tough, people have traumas, etc etc. And I at least try extra hard to not be judgemental directly to the owner.
But Friday we're doing a repair on a huge umbilical hernia on a cat: it's big enough to stick your finger inside the cat and her intestines keep falling through it. But we're not spaying her. Even though we're already going to be in the abdomen.
Because the owner wants to breed her. Even after we told him this is a highly heritable condition. Nope. He wants to breed his blue point domestic shorthair that he found under a bush as a kitten.
Finally published the seraphs species page Ive been working on,
