New today in "social etiquette violations I didn't consider possible": Taking five in a public washroom when some motherfucker walked in with their phone in hand watching videos on full volume. Proceeded to do their thing while still watching the video. I went "Bruh," to no response. They then completed their mission and left. Video still going. And only briefly rinsed one hand. No soap

Lunch with my best friend from university. We waited 50 minutes, but it was so good! 😊
Starting a new thread for weird work stuff.
One of my colleagues who usually does field work and oversees construction is in the same office as me today. He’s on a phone call in our open office space. Relevant excerpts from his end of the call:
There’s smoke?!
Is it our smoke?
Can you go say hi to whoever is making the smoke and ask them what the fuck they’re doing there? Nicely.
I have every confidence that whoever is investigating the smoke will ask “what the fuck” nicely.
Well, my colleague never came to talk to me about this before he left and I didn’t get any phone calls, so whatever was going on with the smoke it wasn’t “tell the lawyer” bad.
I’m on the invite for one of our big weekly operations meetings so that if there’s a legal thing going on I can pop on and talk about it, but usually I don’t need to join. But because we do all this on Teams, I still have access to the meeting chat.
Which means that sometimes I get a chat notification and it’s just a picture of a giant pile of dirt in a parking lot with zero additional context.
I mentioned the out of context dirt pile to someone who was actually in the meeting and she said it was sent to demonstrate that there’s no visual difference between “clean” sand and repurposed sand. So we’re using the repurposed sand. Not sure what its original purpose was.
Got a call from Bobby today while I was in a meeting. Bobby is in charge of all of our field crews.
Things Bobby has called me about in the 5.5 years we’ve worked together:
fire at our storage facility
suspected pollution spill in a stream we’re working on
Very Angry Landowner
bridge collapse
someone was in a car accident (I have received this call from Bobby a few times)
found a gun in a storm drain.
One of my bosses was in the meeting too and I showed him that Bobby was calling me. He got very serious and told me I should go take the call.
So I step out of the meeting and ask Bobby what’s up, fearing the worst…
and apparently our sign vendor is really into forestry and wants to visit one of our project sites and does he need to sign a waiver?
Okay!! Now what do I do with all this extra adrenaline?
Pretty sure I can post this picture without doxxing myself…
I have a private office at the location I work at 4 days per week. But on Thursdays I work at one of our other locations where I don’t have a dedicated office or workspace. I have since commandeered someone else’s private office, but for a while this morning I was using a cubicle that usually belongs to one of the field guys. And there wasn’t a ton of room for the chair…
I’m pretty sure I’m the only lawyer I know who sometimes has to share office space with chainsaws.
I am not joining the operations meeting today because I am mired in the Fuckass Project but I got a Teams chat notification that one of the meeting attendees has to leave the meeting because the crew has arrived at his location to “set cattle panels.” This is almost certainly some type of fencing to keep cows out of a stream we’re restoring, but I like the idea of a cow conference with panelists talking about different varieties of grass or something.
Companywide email today that the supplies of DEET-based bug spray and permethrin have been restocked in two of our offices! Along with stern admonishment to use the bug spray goddamnit* if you’re going to be in the field for any reason.
*The “goddamnit” was implied but not stated.
One more for this thread before I decide it’s too long and start a new one.
Colleague: Miro, this subcontractor wants to take boat into the marsh to perform sampling. We are very concerned.
Me: Isn’t the marsh really shallow?
Colleague: Yep.
Me: Don’t our crews usually go out there on foot?
Colleague: Yep!
Me: Aren’t there rocks?
Colleague: YEP!
Me: And like big logs and stuff?
Colleague: YEP!!!!
Me: Why tf do they want to take a boat?
Colleague: Don’t want to carry their equipment. EVEN AFTER I OFFERED TO HAVE OUR GUYS CARRY IT FOR THEM!
Me: Yeah okay, I’ll have a very scary amendment to their contract ready by Monday morning. Tell them it’s coming and they’re not authorized to proceed until they’ve read and signed this amendment.
My junior lawyer is now gleefully writing the first draft of the Liability for Being a Fucking Idiot About Boat Usage amendment.
Doodle day because I'm too tired for more
(This gave me the future idea of a curly-haired dog body+curly feathered pigeon, or similar)

I'm at a convention for the game of Go with a friend who is almost 84 years old, and he is constantly being accosted by elementary schoolers who want to play him because every year there is a prize for whoever plays a game with the biggest age difference between players.
So every time I go to look for him, I see this:
People in the tags pointing out that this is a great way to get communities to interact: you are extremely correct. There were a lot of kids at this year's go congress (many of them extremely strong players) and it's very funny to watch them roving in packs looking for old people to challenge. At one point when my friends and I were sitting in one of the side rooms, a trio of elementary schoolers marched in and shouted "IS ANYONE HERE OVER FIFTY?"
Presumably so that they could compete for the Elder Slayer award:
When a student copies an essay online instead of writing it and then painstakingly changes every word to a synonym until the text no longer makes any sense...

Any educator who doesn't feel this on a visceral level has never had to experience the psychic pain of reading the phrase "Unused York City."
This is the fifth anniversary of me receiving the paper that contained "Unused York City." With ChatGPT slop invading my classes like original thought-choking kudzu, I now look back on the copy-paste + Spinbot days with a surprising amount of rosy nostalgia.
I was once in the office and another professor called me over. She was teaching a course on global citizenship.
"I can't figure out what this student is writing about," she said. "She keeps using the phrase 'perspiration stores.' Perspiration stores this, perspiration stores that."
I glanced at the paper and read a paragraph.
"Friend," I said. "She's writing about sweatshops."
i just spent like 20 minutes scrolling through the notes for examples and I'm screeching with laughter
