Congress’s anti-communism target fell hard on Hollywood, and those in the industry who were suspected of communism at all were blacklisted from all jobs, because studio’s didn’t want to face backlash from Congress
Salt of the Earth was made nearly 100% with blacklisted crew members from Hollywood, and had such difficulty finding actors that they hired local citizens and miners from the actual strike the plot is based on. There were only 5 trained actors involved, and one of them (Rosaura Revueltas, the woman in the gif) was deported to Mexico before they finished filming on accusations of communism, with no proof and no substance. The filming was plagued with police harassment and threats (according to my professor they were shot at more than once), and the local union hall was burned down.
The movie itself not only covers a real 1950′s labor strike demanding safer and more equal labor conditions for Mexican-American employees, but after the miners were facing arrest, their wives and children took up the strike in their place. The movie’s combination of blacklisted crew, civil rights and feminist message, and pro-union plot (during the red scare) got the movie blacklisted and only 12 theaters in the entire United States would show the movie- it was successful in Europe, but didn’t actually achieve viewership in the US until the 60′s

I would come into the shop an hour before my start time to vacuum, clean up, etc. every day at my old job and the one time I asked to leave 30 minutes early to pick up my kid I was asked if I was going to come all the way back to lock up afterwards. I suddenly realized no matter how much extra you do it’s never appreciated.
The next day I came in at my official start time and left at my official quitting time and it stayed that way until I quit a month later.
You know it is kind of fascinating to me watching professionals do what they do even if it’s presented a bit weirdly. You can in fact go to school for this sort of thing.
A very short new chapter this week but...wow, the preview mentioned that it's about a dream Anya had, but I wasn't expecting baby Anya right off the bat 😭
A couple things we can infer about this short scene with her mother is that 1) they're both wearing what appears to be hospital or another kind of medical facility gowns, which indicates that they were perhaps both at the lab together. Likely her mother was there first for who knows how long, and Anya was born there?
And 2) the emphasis on being able to fly like a butterfly makes me think that they're trapped there. Anya is too young at this point to understand what's happening, but her mother desires that at least Anya is able to "fly away" to a better life someday.
It's hard to tell if Anya has her mind reading ability yet, or if her mother can read minds too. We don't see any of the "sparkles" that are used as a visual cue for when Anya is mind-reading...I feel like we would have seen that in the scene below when she's looking up at her mother before hugging her. But it could just be too short of a scene to say for sure.
Some notes about the Japanese version, @spencer-is-someone and others were wondering if she calls her ママ ("mama") here as opposed to what she calls Yor, はは ("haha"), and yes, she does call her biological mother the actual word "Mama." This is consistent with the Eden interview scene too.
The first panel of the Japanese version also has this extra text on the left that reads "a precious memory from some other time..."
Something that I mentioned in my review of chapter 102 is how Endo hides the faces of certain characters in other characters' flashbacks, such as how Loid's parents' faces are hidden, as is the face of Henry's wife in Martha's flashback. In the same vein, Anya's mother's face is obscured as well.
I interpret this as the characters' suppressing the memory of the character whose face is hidden due to the emotional trauma that character elicits, a trauma that the character having the flashback is trying to overcome, whether they realize it or not. In Anya's case, it could simply be that she doesn't remember her mother's face since she was so young, but regardless, I like that Endo is being consistent with this.
Side note, it seems like the design for Anya's mother is based on Ashe, a character from one of Endo's previous works. Anya's design was based on Ashe as well, so makes sense that her mother would have a stronger resemblance.
Before the chapter ends, we're treated to "soft" Loid with the little sigh he has (the "phew" cloud in the lower right) whenever he's genuinely relaxing around the family 😊
It's interesting how the mind-reading thing from the previous chapters with Melinda is brought up...when Anya asks if Yor can read her mind, Loid looks concerned, but when Yor tells him she only knew about the potato gratin because Anya saw it on TV, he relaxed.
I kinda hope that the Melinda story continues in the next chapter, but it could be paused for now. Likely we'll be moving onto something else next time. Maybe we'll go back to the "Anya reveals her secret to Damian" thing, since school is resuming according to Loid. I am a bit surprised though that this chapter was so short despite not being called a "Short Mission" chapter. Endo could still be trying to catch up after the recent long hiatus he had due to illness. But it's fine, I'm happy with crumbs of Anya's backstory not matter how small! 😅

YOU'VE ACTIVATED MY TRAP CARD. i am extremely proud of my soups of many varieties but SPECIFICALLY my creamy rotisserie chicken tortellini soup. its exactly what it sounds like. i make a delicious rich chicken broth from scratch using a rotisserie chicken carcass and then i mix in the shredded meat from the chicken, like 1/4 cup of heavy cream, and a package of refrigerated tortellini.
it slaps so tremendously. This soup has the power to make a room full of people fall into reverent silence. you will win every potluck. you will receive marriage proposals. it will refill your health bar. these are all my 100% guarantee or your money back.
it is also SO EASY. RECIPE UNDER THE CUT:
NOBLES VERY GOOD CREAMY CHICKEN TORTELLINI SOUP:
my soup slaps bc i make the stock from scratch so here's how u do that. it's very easy:
INGREDIENTS:
1 rotisserie chicken
2 - 4 stalks celery (or the equivalent in ends and bits)
2 - 4 carrots (or the equivalent etc)
1 - 2 onions (or the equivalent)
3 - 6 cloves garlic
2 - 3 bay leaves
black pepper (whole peppercorns work best but regular black pepper is also fine)
IMPORTANT: this takes minimum 4 hours and ideally 8. Start this in the morning if possible.
-take ur rotisserie chicken. pull off all the actual cooked chicken bits. shred it up. put it aside for later. I usually put most of it in a ziploc bag and keep it in the freezer to use for other shit throughout the week.
-now you're left with the chicken carcass/skin/bones/remnants. toss all that into a big pot
-roughly break apart/cut up your veggies, toss them in. No need to remove skins/peels/ends. All of that goes into the soup. Just make sure you rinse em.
-Crush your garlic cloves, toss those in. Add your bay leaves and a generous amount of black pepper. I usually do like a tablespoon of peppercorns or a couple teaspoons of the black pepper
-Now fill your stock pot with water. Leave some room at the top so it doesn't boil over, but u definitely at least want to make sure your carcass is completely submerged.
-Turn your stove up to medium-high until the stock starts to boil (usually like 20 minutes. its a lot of fucking water).
-Now turn the stove down to medium-low so it simmers. (if you know you're going to need to leave it unattended for a bit, turn it down to the lowest setting to slow things down and avoid accidents.)
-Some people like to cover their stock with a lid while it's simmering to retain water. I prefer to make Stock Concentrate so it's easier to store so I leave the lid off.
(BECAUSE I'm making Stock Concentrate I also don't add salt at this stage because idk how much I'm going to end up diluting it later so idk how salty to make it. we will add salt when we turn it into Actual Soup)
-then you leave this alone for 4 - 8 hours. checking on it periodically. if the water level gets too low too fast, add some more water in and reduce the heat.
-at the end of that time, turn off the heat. Then strain all the Stuff out of the stock through a strainer into a (LARGE) mixing bowl or another stock pot.
-now you have Stock Base. from here we can proceed to make a variety of Soups. (Stock Base also freezes SUPER WELL so you can make a big batch and store it for Future Soups.)
TO TURN IT INTO CREAMY CHICKEN TORTELLINI SOUP:
-Chop up carrots, onion, and celery. (You can also add potatoes if you want) (If vegetables cause you texture troubles, you can skip this step. There's plenty of veggie goodness in the stock itself. I like the veggies myself but not everyone does.)
-Fry them in butter in a pan with salt, pepper, garlic, and italian seasoning (or just oregano and thyme if u like) until browned/aromatic.
-Pour your stock base over top, then add water. (Usually I do 2 parts stock base to 1 part water, but it depends on the strength of your stock base and how powerful you want the Flavor to be.)
-Add salt to taste, then simmer until your veggies are softened.
-Add in shredded cooked chicken and then a splash of heavy cream/half and half, simmer for another five minutes or so. (Check your salt levels, the cream will make it less salty)
-SEPARATELY cook your tortellini according to package instructions. Put torts in your bowl and pour soup over the torts. You don't want to mix them together in the pot unless you're planning on eating the whole pot the same day. Cooked tortellini keep GREAT by themselves in the fridge and TERRIBLE in the soup (they get soggy)
(OTHER SOUPS YOU CAN DO WITH STOCK BASE:
-chicken pot pie soup: cook stock base with water, cream, shredded chicken, a little bit of flour as a thickener, and a bag of mixed frozen veggies (or whatever you usually put in your pot pies).
-normal chicken noodle soup
-really fucking good ramen (mix in ginger, green onions, a dash of soy sauce and a dash of dashi)
-chicken n dumplings)
(you can also make a REALLY tasty pot of rice. or an actual pot pie. or baste a roast. use stock base anywhere you'd usually use chicken stock.)

I think mostly what young fandom types (and I guess younger people in general) who are very very invested in the idea that “20 is still basically a minor” need to understand is that the feeling of “I’m just a child pretending to be an adult, and everyone else around me is a REAL adult” is DEEPLY universal (and won’t stop, ever, by the way, sorry!) and also is not, like, praxis.
Believe me, I get it, but the self-infantilization needs to stop, especially when you’re trying to engage in conversations about actual children and the harms they can face. Yes, it is scary to wake up and realize you’re 22 and you still feel like you’re 15, but it happens to all of us. You’re an adult. You have to deal with it.
Like I'm nearing 40 and I don't feel significantly different as a person than I did at 20, other than being less depressed.
I know I'm different bc i respond in different ways to things now, but there's not a sense of "ah yes I am become adult" that's for fuckin sure. It's normal. It's okay. So stop infantilizing yourselves about it.
And stop infantilizing others about it, too. Yes, you're realizing at 25 that you still don't feel like an adult, but you cannot use that feeling to let yourself think of people who are younger than you as "even less of an adult than I am" when they are, in fact, adults. And you have to be very, very careful not to let that feeling convince you that it's okay for young adults to have fewer rights.
There's no age at which you magically stop being worried that you're not doing it right or well enough. Every single person alive is the oldest they've ever been and we are ALL winging it. Being scared of getting it wrong doesn't mean that you shouldn't be allowed to get it wrong.

My run of the endgame yesterday was the first (and probably only!!) time that I've chosen Davrin as the distraction leader over Harding and like

but two: In the Regret Prison, one of the things Davrin says is "You asked a lot of us, but you asked even more of yourself"
and it just made me really emotional because like. To me that confirms that the companions know how hard Rook is pushing themself, and that they really are trying to do what they can to be supportive to Rook
