Imagine: Logan, who's deaf but not mute, and Patton, who's mute but not deaf. They're both proficient in ASL, and Virgil and Roman each know a little as well out of necessity.
Logan's not very good at reading lips, so when someone says something to him, Patton translates it into ASL, and when Patton needs to say something to the others, Logan speaks for him. Sometimes they both sign so fast in their excitement that no one else can keep up, and it's adorable.
Patton doesn't really know how to say no, and Logan is incredibly sarcastic because he has to keep up with Virgil's and Roman's banter since Patton can't talk, so you have Logan being protective of Patton. They're essentially one entity, never separated for very long.
Virgil: Logan, can you lend me a dollar?
Logan: *looks expectantly at Patton*
Patton: *signs it out for him*
Logan, turning to Virgil: No, you lazy oaf. Go bother Roman.
Roman: Hey, Patton, wanna go do [insert thing] with me?
Patton, reluctantly, in ASL: I don't know, I'm a little busy today...
Logan: He said maybe, but he's too polite and we can all tell he'd rather not.
Roman: *nods in understanding* That's alright, I get it. Maybe another day.
Since Patton doesn't usually make any sound, the rare moments when he laughs make Logan's day.
When Patton wants to make a pun, he signs it to Logan, who stares at him for a long moment, sighs exaggeratedly, and says the pun anyway. He wouldn't do it for anyone else, but it's Patton, and he'd do anything for Patton.
