if i can impart any one piece of wisdom to y’all, it’s to, whenever possible, assume good intentions
assume people are trying their best, want to be good and treat others well, and that when their behavior doesn’t align with those goals, it’s because of outside factors that are pushing them to their limit
it’s hard to do, it doesn’t always come naturally, but it’s worth it
before anyone jumps in with an “op has clearly never worked in the service industry,” i work in a public facing library job
i have a patron who is mean as a snake. won’t respond when you greet her, barks orders at you, and is generally nasty
i couldn’t stand her & dreaded the moment she walked in the door, until i stopped one day & went “wow, to walk around feeling unhappy enough to treat people so horribly every day. what a difficult way to live.”
and so my tactics changed. i made a point to be extra kind & friendly to her. she changed her hair color one day & when i complimented her on it, she was very caught off guard & said “oh, thank you. my whole life i’ve thought i was ugly.”
now we’re at the point where she shows me pictures of watercolor paintings she made & says hi when she walks in the door. she’s not my favorite patron, but she’s perfectly okay. most unpleasant people aren’t inherently rotten, they’re just unhappy & coping with it poorly
assume people are always doing their best, even if their best happens to fall a bit short. assume good intentions
this job market is a fucking nightmare
Not gonna lie I kinda hate the compulsion in fandom to shove every relationship into rigid definition boxes. Every relationship is either parent-child, siblings or romantic. Come on. Relationships are so much more complex than that. Do you at least have friends.
Be honest do you think your mental illness/mood disorder makes you more creative funny or interesting

one of the really vile things about generative ai which i feel like we don’t talk about enough is that for like 90% of the cases where it’s used to generate text, image, video etc. THE EXPLICIT INTENT is to deceive the viewer/reader into thinking it’s NOT ai. what this does is to create an extra level of ambient distrust when viewing any kind of media not created by yourself and when you do notice that something is ai-generated, there is the implicit understanding that whoever “made” the ai-generated thing was trying to deceive you or take advantage of you. thus a kind of ambient paranoia is spread across society where everyone feels like everyone else is out to get them and that nothing is real.

posting this here cause I’m still not over it. people who write instructions I love you you’re so funny
reading problematic fanfiction but shaking my head so random tumblr user who thinks thought crimes are real knows I don't condone it in real life
every time a post like this is made antis go straight to 'so you like jerking off to kids getting raped and animals being raped' like jesus christ. jesus christ what the hell are you talking about????? that was not even on my fucking radar it seems like a YOU problem
Possibly my spiciest take is that it's actually good to have people you respect and like that have some dogshit takes.
I think part of what is making young people lonelier, in discussing why they're increasingly isolated, is that they're so afraid of meeting someone who doesn't hold their same beliefs, and instead of being just core beliefs it is kinda ancillary shit.
It's actually okay to disagree even on social topics! Even on some political ones! But I mean, online you can start with "i love this mutual but they have a really bad/uninformed opinion about x media"
I know this is IMMEDIATELY going to be taken in bad faith, and yes babygirl, you are so right, I DO want you to go make best friends with both the KKK grand wizard AND your nearest nazi leader.
But seriously, as someone who has spent two decades doing community organization: finding ways to connect with different people is so so so important. There are people i follow here who ate 80% smart and their brain falls out of their head 20% of the time and that is GOOD FOR MY MENTAL ECOSYSTEM AND GOOD FOR LEARNING HOW TO BE A PERSON
LET'S ALL GO PISS ON THE POOR
There is no human on earth that lines up with your idealogy 100%. They don't exist. I've known my husband for almost 3 decades, he is my best friend, and we don't mesh that well because we're separate people. It would be insufferable to have someone who always agrees with you.
I think at least part of the problem is we've decided everything is a moral fucking crisis. Everything is a make-or-break issue, and it's impossible to meet those metrics. If everything is the most dire judgement on your character, then nothing fucking matters. If nobody is allowed to grow or change their mind, then nobody can meet that standard.
The main thing about this that no one likes to acknowledge is that everyone, yes even op, has at least a 20% intellectual fail rate.
In this era of ai and anti-intellectualism, the desire for and, especially, the expectation of, being right without trying is at an all-time high. On the political left in particular, there is no match for the social capital of being Correct.
But being right about shit, even being intelligent, is not how people form healthy relationships and communities. Those things are built off of common goals and a steady dedication of care, time, and labor.
Additionally, when you do build true friendships, relationships, communities, you will find that everyone's 20% fail rate is a vital teaching moment for everyone else.
Everyone needs their bullshit takes questioned, and this confrontation is most palatable coming from your bonkers friend Ariana who you once had to stop from putting the electric kettle on the stovetop. She's fucking dumb sometimes and so. are. you.
Diversity is a necessity of health; a diversity of thought is no different.
Just to add- if there are certain things you absolutely are no go on thats fine! (I work with kids so anyone who would hurt kids is instant no) but if someone doesn't like kids? Avoids them? As long as we can connect other ways!

my "I'm with the boomers on this one" take is that I should not need an app to park my fucking car. increasingly when I'm out and about and need to use public parking, the only option is an app. no. no. give me a meter I can plug the loose change from the bottom of my purse into. worst comes to absolute worst give me a machine to insert my credit card which prints a receipt for the dashboard of my car (I don't like those either but at least they are on site). "to pay for parking, download our app!" why don't you download my ass
