People assuming he/him or that they’re a man happens a lot for characters like Kris Dreemurr (Deltarune), the Hollow Knight and Vessels (Hollow Knight), the slugcats (Rain World), Raine Whispers (The Owl House).

Generally I see it for characters that are “little guys” or “little creatures” where no gender is implied and so the audience just kinda… assumes its a boy. This is common for protagonists that are animals. Same sort of logic as when people see a wild animal and default to “he” when referring to it. It’s “male” as default. But also, for characters like Raine, it can happen due to romantic framing with a woman and trying to reinforce assumptions of heterosexuality.

This can also happen with lesbian characters. If one of them is butch, sometimes when the media is translated in another language the pronouns are changed for one of them to be he/him so that they’re straight. The example that comes to mind is Ruby and Sapphire from Steven Universe.

In real life enben tend to be lumped in as “women-lite”, but these “little guy” characters are often devoid of enough features (or aren’t humanlike enough) to make it difficult for those accustomed to the gender binary to easily sort them. So they’re defaulted as men.

I’ve usually seen enben characters that are assumed women to have features culturally considered feminine. Like a high voice or wearing a dress. (Phantom, Silksong)
