hey shoutout to my fellow ppl who used to and/or continue to struggle with regularly fulfilling everyday hygeine tasks for literally any reason. You can make a lot of progress on that sort of thing that you may never talk about but thatās still hard-earned improvement and Im proud of you.

Maybe donāt assume a binary presentation for a nonbinary character at all! Maybe, the solution to āpeople assume masculinity for nonbinary characters a lotā is not ālets assume femininity instead.ā maybe the solution is actually to stop assuming a nonbinary character has to present one out of two ways. its in the word. non-binary.
Iāve seen some people in the notes wondering when assumed masculinity happens for enben characters. so Iāll just list some examples Iāve seen myself. (To clarify, this is NOT meant to he a gotcha or to shame anybody for not having seen it before. Iām just hoping to help fill out peopleās perspective)
People assuming he/him or that theyāre a man happens a lot for characters like Kris Dreemurr (Deltarune), the Hollow Knight and Vessels (Hollow Knight), the slugcats (Rain World), Raine Whispers (The Owl House).
Generally I see it for characters that are ālittle guysā or ālittle creaturesā where no gender is implied and so the audience just kindaā¦ assumes its a boy. This is common for protagonists that are animals. Same sort of logic as when people see a wild animal and default to āheā when referring to it. Itās āmaleā as default. But also, for characters like Raine, it can happen due to romantic framing with a woman and trying to reinforce assumptions of heterosexuality.
This can also happen with lesbian characters. If one of them is butch, sometimes when the media is translated in another language the pronouns are changed for one of them to be he/him so that theyāre straight. The example that comes to mind is Ruby and Sapphire from Steven Universe.
In real life enben tend to be lumped in as āwomen-liteā, but these ālittle guyā characters are often devoid of enough features (or arenāt humanlike enough) to make it difficult for those accustomed to the gender binary to easily sort them. So theyāre defaulted as men.
Iāve usually seen enben characters that are assumed women to have features culturally considered feminine. Like a high voice or wearing a dress. (Phantom, Silksong)
But I donāt see enben characters like this as often, probably due to femininity not being broadly seen as ādefaultā or āneutralā like masculinity is. When the reality is that both are neutral-value! A non-binary person or character can present however they like and still be non-binary!
