every time a fereldan character calls someone a dog or a bitch negatively i’m like “you wouldn’t say this. dogs are the pride of your nation. they’re on your flag. this wouldn’t have these connotations to you” and then i tell myself to please relax. but i still think abt it every time

sometimes i still think about how the dragon age series was about all sort of ways slavery kept existing and the different shapes it took and how deeply engrained into society this type of exploitment is, culmunating with it's future antagonist being a radical anti-slavery person who talked about all the things he saw being as slavery and that he would see the world be freed of, only for the fourth game to refuse to acknowledge slavery, to call the anti-slavery crusade the character had "a failure so why should he try it again", to have a slaver order around said character who was implied to have been her slave as the good ending, where we were deep into slave societies only to be told slavery was something only extremists were doing, and then when asked about it the devs just went "everyone knows slavery is bad we didn't need to talk about it" making people sound like some sort of perverts for wanting to see slavery be actually acknowledged on screen..... still the stupidity of all time.

Don't forget the pope of the slavery empire deciding that the best way to combat slavery is to be a street level vigilante who doesn't even focus on burning records or slave ships, instead of just making it illegal to own or sell other people. And also he has a rug in his secret hideout depicting elven slaves in manacles but don't read too much into that

the thing that bewilders me about a lot of fantasy readers is that they read about settings and plots featuring imperialism, war, and slavery and then call the inclusion of violence, abuse, and sexual exploitation "edgy" and "gratuitous" and it's like what did you think was happening. why were you under the impression that you were going to get a cozy story about fascism or something. far be it from me to criticize anyone for not wanting to read about torture in their spare time, and there are certainly cases where heavy subjects are poorly executed, but is it not equally insulting to sanitize them for a feel-good adventure.. like no one put a gun to your head and forced you to give your fantasy novel an enslaved protagonist. sometimes writing is supposed to make you feel bad

can i say something. i feel like exhibitionism as a kink/concept simply could not exist among circle mages. there is no thrill of risking being caught because all that happens is your classmate elbows your ass out of the way and grabs whatever it is they were looking for in that closet you're fucking in and tells you in a bored voice to hurry the fuck up because you're right in front of the spare potion bottles.

In a circle like the gallows it would make sense for risk/exposure kinks to arise from mages having first (and ongoing) sexual experiences characterized by a pervasive fear of getting caught by a hostile jailer who will be easily able to use it as a pretext for violence.
