Ive seen a few people get mad about the tweet that says "this has been talked about extensively, youre just 21" on the basis that the poster is referring to a trans girl talking about silence of the lambs.
And look, okay, listen. I have a film degree. Im not in any an expert on cinema nor am I a film scholar but I do have some higher formal education on the topic, and I am a trans person who has, unfortunately, been 21. Here's my 2 cents:
Firstly, trans-coded villains in horror movies (namely the "man in a dress" archetype) is pretty cinema 101. It IS so extensively talked about that you were probably drawing an eye in the back of the lecture hall if you dont remember anything being said about it. If you ever take a horror movie class specifically then you are absolutely guaranteed to have this conversation and have the plethora of scholarship about it thrown at you for required reading.
Secondly, I do not like this idea that simply being a bit rude or short with someone of a particular demographic is always and exclusively rooted in a prejudice towards the identity group(s) they are a part of. There is a VERY big difference between active transphobia and just being a bit of a dick, and conflating the two is going to make things very messy and potentially dangerous. For starters, you are going to create an extremely paranoid and jumpy bunch of young trans people who are absolutely convinced that the entire world is out to kill them when they inevitably encounter some random asshole in the real world. And you are going to give a whole bunch of conservatives a whole bunch of ammunition to say that we think every minor inconvenience or moment of discomfort is a targeted attack against us, frankly because you are acting like it is.
Additionally, every 21 year old has a very weird superiority complex. I did, you did/do/will. It just comes with the territory. Youre having your first taste of true independence and are probably in undergrad, which is an environment that drip-feeds you a lot of rewards for doing essentially what you just did in high school again but at a slightly higher difficulty with less social ostracism. If you live on your own or in the dorms with other 21 year olds, you will all just feed into each other's superiority complexes. You end up convinced that you and your friends are the smartest people alive and the first ones to ever come up with certain ideas, that I promise have been thought of by millions of 21 year olds before you. This includes "has anyone else noticed that trans-coded villains are common in horror movies?" And I think its justified to have a bit of a reality check in someone saying "yes, everyone has, this has been discussed extensively for generations, youre just 21."
Finally, I do not appreciate in the slightest the response to this tweet being "silence of the lambs has no artistic merit and should be scrubbed from the media landscape entirely because of Buffalo Bill." If you personally are not comfortable with/do not have the ability to look past the trans-coded villain archetype you dont have to watch it, but to act like the presence of a poorly-aged trope completely negates all the very real positive impact a foundational film did for modern horror is infuriatingly anti-intellectual and betrays your one-dimensional morality around media, as well as your complete inability to look at something objectively.
As one final thought, the idea that a snippy tweet about being frustrated with typical 21 year old behavior is "ageist" is the most 21 year old shit ive ever heard. Truly impressive levels of missing the point.
i'm in agony, SOMEbody please help me remember what the childhood book series was that centered around critters that looked like this:
IM IN HELL WHAT WAS IT
Little Critter?
THATS THE BITCH
alright smart-aleks, what about THIS one huh?? the dude had a really cool shading technique where he just swirled (colored pencil?) around??
Parts :)
YOU GUYS ARE TOO GOOD AT THIS WHAT THE HELL
ok my partner wanted in on this, I have no idea what this is
I GOT YOU
i'm never leaving this fucking site i stg i love you all.
OK
final one
for all the marbles,
this one doesn't have an illustration bc i think it was just a kids novel but i haven't been able to find ANYTHING about it on my occasional internet queries:
kids is staying with his (grandmother?) in the woods and she warns him not to look a fox in the eyes bc they're tricksy and will swap places with you. obviously that's the first thing the little boy does and gets body snatched by a fox who uhhhh proceeds to pig out with his new little boy human hands and the boy has to trick the fox into looking him in the eyes again to switch back...
thats all i got, it's an older book i wanna say from the 60's?? 70's?? kinda the same jist of "Little Rascal"
perhaps this?
A DECADE OF SEARCHING THANK YOU @dyketennant IM ORDERING THIS IMMEDIATELY
ok i lied i'm back bc this is fun and i get to share some of my most deeply cherished childhood books with you all
i cannot express how much these are from memory, that's how internalized these artists and writers have become, they're a part of me now
The first one looks like The Spider and the Fly, though the poses are a bit different.
The second one is likely Stellaluna.
I’m not sure about the third one, I will keep searching.
I think I found the third one, though I’m the least confident about this one. Is it Creature Tech?
Unfortunately it doesn’t have a praying mantis on the cover :(
maybe im just a hater and i never really engage with true crime content outside of the few times i was forced to in high school but whenever people are like "yeah its just fascinating.... to hear how killers think.... its so interesting to know their thought processes..." and well. 99% of the time its "they realized they had the chance to hurt somebody and took it" and they werent some misunderstood genius it was 1. police incompetence & people not caring about the victims and 2. most serial killers are white guys. and white guys can get away with a hell of a lot
i had a true crime phase in middle school that lasted a few months before i concluded basically that there was nothing further of interest to be learned.
a while later, spent several years circling back to studying and puzzling out how fascism and similar ideologies and hysterias could overtake whole societies and lead to horrific crimes on a large scale. which came from a similar place of sick fascination and the misplaced unconscious belief that understanding could somehow confer protection or control.
and now that's depressingly mundane and predictable also. 😔
people hate children so much its insane oh my god. ten thousand bombs on ur house
that's an amazingly brainless take. kids who are bullied do not have trusted adults because they have learned from experience that adults either can't help them or don't want to.
-if an adult can't help and knows it, they often feel resentment for the hurt kid that just reminded them of their inability to control students and helplessness to protect vulnerable children. this resentment will twist into anger or cold detachment.
-if an adult can't help and doesn't know it, they'll try interventions or punishments that makes the bullying worse. they will be hurt and indignant to find out the kid they 'rescued' is not sufficiently grateful.
-if an adult doesn't want to help, they'll find ways to punish the kid for daring to ask for something the adult doesn't think they deserve. the open approval and abetting of the bullying will intensify now that everyone knows this is fine and cool.
kids who don't trust adults aren't just stupid and rebellious and self-defeating for no good reason. they learned from direct and painful experience.
You also need to be able to conceptualise your issue as a problem that can be solved in the first place (difficult if, for instance, you have been bullied into believing you are fundamentally flawed in some inescapable fashion and this treatment is merely the inevitable result) and know how to describe it in a way that will make sense to an adult.

i have been noticing recently that people younger than me are too sensitive, while people older than me are not sensitive enough. which, if i'm correct, should be taken as a sign that the total reality penetration vortex is operating as intended -- within as few as five or six generations we may very well be producing babies who can directly perceive the wound at the heart of the world
I have food poisoning, I’m on my period, I have a migraine, my POTS is out of control, and I’m meant to get on a flight tomorrow to hopefully make it to my father’s death bed in time.
Emailing me a “review” of my book calling it cringe cannot hurt me. And if you claim you hoped to achieve anything else you’re either a liar or in denial about your own motives. You should reflect on that.
I made this non-rebloggable earlier because I didn’t want it to leave containment, but after discussing this with some other friends who primarily sell their work via booktok and Insta, this is apparently a thing right now where readers are going out of their way to message authors “honest and valuable feedback” because they believe authors need to be told how to improve.
Except they’re not giving actual valuable feedback, because being critical of something does not actually mean having constructive critical feedback.
Being able to offer constructive feedback is a skill. It doesn’t mean “having a negative opinion.”
You don’t need to be a professional writer or editor, but you do preferably need to have a basic understanding of technical writing skill, an understanding of the genre you are critiquing and a very basic grasp that just because you do not like something, does not make something objectively bad.
Messaging me to tell me you find something “cringe” isn’t valuable feedback. That’s you going out of your way to make sure a stranger knows you don’t like them.
Doubling down and emailing me back to tell me you “just wanted to help,” like help where? Where was the feedback?
What am I supposed to do with that except feel bad and stop writing?
You knew what you were doing and I will hold that mirror up. If the reflection you see makes you uncomfortable, that’s on you.
- -
Also, as a wider note: don’t do this in general, don’t tag or email authors in negative reviews.
Reviews are for other readers. They belong in reader spaces. If an author invades reader spaces and gets mad about what they see, that’s on them. But don’t go up to the author’s online door and demand they acknowledge your personal dislike. That’s weird. Why are you doing that? Rate the book one star for your own records and move on to the next one.
You’ve heard of the Roaring 20s........
now get ready for the Screaming 20s - coming to a decade near you in 2020
is it too early or can we start screaming now
in retrospect perhaps we should have started sooner

Thinking of Grace and Rocky getting so bored on the way to Erid and also them just being so sad they they can’t speak each others language, no matter how much they understand it’s just not physically possible. But maybe just maybe there’s some word in their respective languages that they can sort of say (not very well) but enough that someone would understand it. And they spend days going through everything thats sort of similar to the vocal range of the other.
POV Adrian when they finally get Erid. Your mate is back with this freaky alien that speaks in such a condensed range of tones and you understand nothing it says but it seems happy to be here and happy to meet you. And then in the middle of a ramble of incompressible sounds it says, in the strangest accent, “thermometer” and then goes back to utter nonsense.

okay yeah i do think your filler is off putting and your botox makes you rigid and strange to look at
I know you think it’s “feminist” to hate on women who already have self esteem and image issues (through no fault of their own, as a direct result of patriarchy) for doing something to help them cope with their fleeting youth - which may or may not have been stripped from them against their will due to years of depression, abuse, oppression, or whatever else - but the truth is that the freedom to get Botox is actually a right feminists have fought for - whether intentionally or unintentionally. Women used to get thrown away when we outlived our youth and beauty - now we have the option to prolong it and change the way we are perceived and treated by society as a whole. We ALL had to grow up too fast. We ALL have to cope with a childhood that ended too soon. I’m no less a feminist than you are simply because I choose to hold onto my youth and beauty because it helps me feel better about my own loss of innocence. This is all just another excuse to hate on women and tear us down. You’re literally letting the patriarchy win by judging women for their personal choices which harm absolutely no one. Please grow up. Not everyone is conventionally attractive or ages gracefully. Some women can cope with that and some can’t. Both deserve love and respect. Have some decency. You’re not edgy for this. You’re hating just like a man would.
Feminists … have fought… for the right … to use Botox…..
dude what contraption is using up the power grid this time
Im very grateful that I was able to recently connect with Ray Lederer.
I passed along the appreciation and love that we as fans have for his work. I also shared all of our deepest sympathies with him in regards to the layoffs at Microsoft/Xbox which affected him and so many others.
Ray is unbelievably kind and friendly.
Ray has immense humility about his work and a deep love and respect for the artists at Bethesda.
Ray is the absolute best. It means the world to me that he took the time to chat with me and that he graciously tolerated me bugging him with so many questions about his work 😂❤️
The new Odyssey adaptation has inevitably gotten people talking about a Muppet version of it, and they’re frequently suggesting Kermit as Odysseus, Miss Piggy as Penelope.
I’m sorry but that’s thinking way too small, hear me out:
We need to have Miss Piggy as Odysseus, and Kermit as Penelope.
Think about it… who’s the more fickle, prideful, warlike one in that relationship? Who is absolutely ready to go ham, at a moment’s notice?
It ain’t Kermit
Miss Piggy tied to the mast while Statler and Waldorf heckle her from the sea

Thinking a bit more about the ending
The ratio of how much is fantasy vs reality is all over the place during the finale, but Akio claims his projection machine is creating all the stage sets, and they've never left his office. Which suggests that the rose seal door he's tugging on would be, given its placement... a door out. Which he is incapable of opening because a) attempting to open a door via whacking it with a sword is a bonkers move and b) he created this trap himself and refuses to stop playacting to get out of it.
But when Utena much more reasonably attempts to open the door, it turns into the coffin. This implies she has a better grasp on the situation being self-inflicted: Utena got into the coffin herself, and there's the flashback to Anthy's suicide attempt. It turns out that Utena did not get out of the coffin because a handsome prince saved her; she got out because she saw injustice and wanted to become someone who could fix it. She had to change herself. The last we see of Utena is her defeated saying "I guess I couldn't be the prince after all; it was all make believe" but yes, of course it's all make believe. You never needed to be the prince because the prince never saved anyone. Anthy is in the coffin because she's chosen to be, and she has to choose to get out. But she can see something that nudges her out of that despair, and that's what you did for her, the same way she did it unknowingly for you
If the way to get the power to revolutionize the world is simply to leave--to break the cycle, to stop dancing the same steps on the same ever-shifting stage, to shatter the egg (not that any of the people saying that seem to realize what it means)--instead of giving their grandiose speech, every time the student council members ride the elevator they should silently contemplate a poster of this image:
tbh the real reason Julie didn't ban 4chins is because she knew it would be an embarrassment for her department and the social media age restriction when that inevitably both failed and built the public profile of 4chan. she's always focused not on actually achieving anything but gaining public license. hence why she would constantly start very stupid spats with Musk - the least liked man in Australia - and makes a huge fuss about evil big tech pushing the government around. I think she knows telegram won't give the government one red cent and so she's either 1 angling to have it banned from Australian app markets 2 hoping that their defiance makes her crusade look more justified.
