Aaaand now itâs time for Punkâs introduction! :-D
Punk is Daftâs larger, much less impatient and annoyed sibling. Theyâre also Adrianâs (who I headcanon as the biodome projectâs lead architect) apprentice!
Theyâre very chill, slower moving due to their size (much like Adrian) and endlessly creative. Theyâve been spending all of their time endlessly researching Earth design in an attempt to replicate it within the dome.
Grace never intended for the duo to be a Daft Punk reference and originally named Punk for their mohawk before he even knew the two were related, when he eventually met Punkâs sibling officially & needed to give them a name, the reference was just too good to pass up.

It's hard for me to even put into words how amazing this weekend was. I've never traveled to two cons back to back on the same weekend but for these legends? For my two favorite TMNT series? Absolutely. Such a beautiful, joyful, totally unforgettable experience! What an honor!

Sonny Rollins, one of the most influential Jazz musicians of our time, died this afternoon. He was 95
Sonny Rollins, the tenor saxophonist and restless genius whose bold, distinctive tone and constant experimentation kept him on the cutting edge of jazz for more than 50 years, has died at age 95.
Spokeswoman Terri Hinte told The Associated Press that Rollins died at his home in Woodstock, New York.Â
She cited no specific cause of death, but said he had been largely housebound over the past couple of years because of various physical problems.
it was an entire radio show built around perpetuating a very simple joke, but it was uniquely powerful in its capacity to prompt the reaction I was looking for.
so my slot was at the tail end of rush hour, and i got a fair number of listeners/callers who were on the way home from the office. And like, I had a lot of callers, who almost all wanted to request songs that really didnât fit with the aesthetic. I had pitched a power pop show when i got my slot, but the callers were not having it; they invariably wanted classic rock.
this made sense in a way. if you think about the demographics of the people who listened to the radio for music in 2010 instead of their ipods or cds or whatever, youâd expect them to skew older right? accordingly, i quickly realized that almost all of the people who called to request songs were Dads of a Certain Age. It was honestly annoying at first - Iâm all for most classic rock, but that wasnât what the show was supposed to be.
And so one day, when i was feeling particularly annoyed with requests that just didnât fit thematically, i came up with the joke that rapidly became the only reason I kept the show going. Per station rules, I had to play a certain number of pre-recorded PSAs during my show, and before I cut to one I was supposed to read out the song titles and artists for all the music i had played before the break. So this one day when i had to inform the world before the break that the song they just heard was, per a listenerâs request, Hey Jude by the Beatles, I decided to do a goof. I said:
âand finally, that last song you heard was Hey Jude, which was of course written and performed by the Rolling Stones.â
I barely had time to get the ads going before the phone started ringing. See, I had been assuming people would realize i was making an obvious joke by claiming one of the most well-known Beatles tracks was a Stones song, but i had failed to consider that my listeners were mostly 55-70 year old dads who were irritated from a long day in the office.
And when those dads heard me, a millennial woman, get the artist of an extremely well-known beatles song WRONG???!
they HAD to call in to correct my ignorance. never in a polite way either, it was condescending and annoyed or nothing. and like, they were just SO personally insulted by my inaccurate reporting that it took a massive amount of effort for me to avoid cracking up during the call. I had never understood why some people would enjoy trolling random strangers on the internet before, but in that moment, I understood the appeal entirely.
obviously i did it again right before the next commercial break, immediately after playing Donât Stop Me Now by Queen David Bowie.
the phone immediately began to ring.
âARE YOU AN IDIOT?â one of the callers began, âDAVID BOWIE???? THAT WAS QUEEN!â
âI thought David Bowie was the lead singer of Queen though?â I replied with as much innocent earnestness as i could conjure.
I could hear an intake of breath as the infuriated boomer on the other end of the line struggled to figure out where to even start.
@eduards-stuff I kept doing the same joke for an hour a week for an entire year, and the dads NEVER caught on. After episode 1 of the new format I started taking the angry dad calls on air, which added another layer of hilarity to the whole concept.
My friends on campus knew that hay I was doing and enjoyed tuning in, but only one actual listener ever figured out what I was doing, and he was literally a random 30 year old guy from the netherlands with access to an early internet connection radio service. He was possibly my only actual fan. I only know about him because he went to the effort of making a skype and paying for international service so he could call in, and while I got a few calls from him, the first remains my favorite:
me: hi there, youâve got TST-
him: *strained, wheezing dutch laughter*
me: hey, is everything o-
him: pfffHAHAHAAH YOU MAKE THEM SO MAD. THEY THINK SO LITTLE OF YOUUUUUUUU BUT THE MEN ARE THE ONES WHO ARE FOOLISH! HA! HA! HA! YOU HAVE DUPED THEM!
me: sir i do not know you and i have never even seen you but i am in romantic love with you.
ohhhh shit. target is recalling their up & up baby wipes (fragrance free & fresh cucumber scented) because they're contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli, multiple people are reporting discoloration & infections. i just got a call about it cuz i had purchased those but i've already gone through them đ so no refund for me. but im fine. if you have these they're saying you need to immediately stop using them and bring them back to target for a full refund. this bacteria can cause life threatening infections in children/infants and people with compromises immune systems (ESPECIALLY cystic fibrosis!!) and i know lots of other chronically ill people follow me!!!!

Sry im removing this from the tags and posting it to the main blog. You know who you are and you are 100% correct.
The biggest lie the rise fandom ever led me to believe was that leo is the main character of rise. When raph is RIGHT THERE.
I remember mapping out tmnp (my rottmnt/pokemon crossover) and when you break the original show down episode by episode, most if not all of the main overarching story plot beats are given to raph. Leo is often secondary to raph (hello leo the lancer) which is UNUSUAL IN A TMNT ITERATION. (Its usually flipped). Ofc the movie came along (and maybe im taking a lot of fan perception post movie), but prior to that the show was about Raph. (Atleast in terms of interacting with the overarching plot).
I do wonder if rise was given 7 seasons, would we start seeing more of a split focus amongst the turtles instead of relying on raph or leo to drive the A Plot. Wouldve loved to see that. Esp mikey. Rise's biggest fumble.
This actually has been something Iâve thought about in two conventional narrative structures when looking at the first episode and finale episodes of Rise:
The Heroâs Journey:
The Heroâs Journey follows a hero move from the normal world (New York) to the below/special world (The Hidden City). In Mystic Mayhem, Raphâs actions drive the plot more than any of the other cast.
Ordinary World: Cannonball scene. Intro to the main cast, their personalities, and inter-relations with one another.
Call to Adventure: Mayhem is our call to adventure. Raph is the one that notices and interacts with this call, without input from the rest of the cast until they offer their reactions:
Refusal of the Call: there isnât much of a ârefusalâ in the traditional sense in Rise. The refusal could be seen as them getting defeated while trying to answer the call, and in not all entering the doorway in pursuit of Mayhem. Ultimately it is because their desire to save April that they choose to enter âthe secret worldâ
Meet the mentor: Also an atypical mentor moment- as Splinter (the mentor) is a reluctant one. Though he is where the turtles get the artifact to venture into the Hidden City on their own. This is a typical beat in the heroâs journey (ex: Obi Wan giving Luke his lightsaber)
Crossing the Threshold: Entering the Hidden City
Tests/Allies/Enemies: The rest of the show can fall into this beat. Tears of their new powers, meeting new mutants, etc. Some good episode examples of Raph being at the center of these tests include Down with the Sickness, Mascot Melee, Shell in a Cell, Bug Busters, Mrs Cuddles, Stuck on You, Pizza Pit (which Raph literally narrates lol), Sparring Partner, Man vs Sewer, End Game (Raphâs meditation vision is the catalyst of the boys breaking out of their imprisonment), Pizza Puffs, Sidekicks Ahoy and Raphâs Ride Along. Raphâs episodes touch most on the showâs themes of growing through adolescence, responsibility to self vs family, etc.
Approach the inmost cave: As this is TV, this could be placed in a number of places since season structure is cyclical, but Iâd say as a series this would be beating Drax after he takes the Dark armor. The turtles come to their realization they could do things their way after Raph expresses it first as the leader.
Ordeal: Shredder! Heâs the largest threat to the showâs themes, and is the endgame boss.
Seizing the sword: The sword is literally Karai. It isnât even subtle (not that it had to be).
The road block: Big Mama (in having Shredder throughout season 2) and again, Shredder when he destroys the lair and takes Drax/Splinter.
Resurrection- the Shredder fight, in which the turtles use their ninpo training from Karai to take down the boss once and for all
Return with the Elixer: after their victory, Shredder and Karai are freed, the Hidden City and New York are safe, and the turtles return home with the new skills and knowledge they obtained through their adventure. The secret world and its challenges are conquered. This is where Raphâs hero journey ends, and where Leoâs begins for the movie. I think this is the most important part of why they fight at the start- Raph was the one that learned the most from the series because it was his story. At the start of Leoâs story, heâs of course going to be at odds with Leo when he is aiming to refuse his call.
Save the Cat:
Save the Cat is a screenplay format tool, so Iâll also be adapting a bit due to TV. There is overlap with the Heroâs Journey so Iâll only touch on the main differences. But I like this one since⌠Raph literally saves the cat (dog⌠thingie).
Opening: Cannonball scene.
Set up: not too much in terms of set-up outside of the opening, characters and tone established.
Themes stated: the main theme is âYou are not alone,â which pairs well with many subthemes- Family vs individual, Adolescence vs growing up, Adventure vs duty
Catalyst: Mayhem spotted by Raph, who drives the need to help.
Debate: After losing, the debate is whether they should go after April. Which they do. Obvi.
Break into 2: They accept the challenge and descend into the Hidden City.
B-story- skipping because this is more for a screenplay narrative
Fun and Games: This is the rest of the series. Fun and Games is where you take the premise and show what you can do with it. What happens when Raph is the leader? What happens if the turtles have powers? Ect. Most of these questions are Raph-driven when it pertains to the group. Which is why the other turtleâs individual episodes feel more catered to them, they donât have the themes of the entire show resting on them as well. They are more bottle episode in nature.
Midpoint- The stakes are raised. This is the Shredder plot interspersed throughout the fun and games.
Bad Guys close in: Battle Nexus New York. Turtles are separated and surrounded by small bads, the medium bad (Big mama), and ultimately the big bad (Shredder)
All is Lost: Attack on Lair, loss of Karai, Drax and Splinter kidnapped. No adults- leaving Raph at the center of what needs to be done.
Dark Night of the Soul: Toddâs- trying to figure out what to do next without mentors, a plan, or weapons. Raph is feeling the most pressure as the leader of his team AND the oldest Hamato left standing.
Break into 3: The team unlocks their ninpo.
A lot of the finale plot points are through Raphâs lens. Being in Splinterâs mind (where HE is the first to be told the showâs main theme of Anata wa hitori ja nai.), the one that makes the decision to leave the lair without Splinter/Drax/Karai, the catalyst for the other three unlocking their ninpo, etc. I get that people love the movie (itâs a more contained narrative through these structures), but these beats are so fucking integral to what Rise stood for as a show.
Finale: Shredder fight
Final Image: Raphâs journey is done. He led his family to success and saved his father and the world. He honestly should have gotten more emotional resolution here, but the rush in production robbed us of that. But again- this is the passing of the main character torch. The show laid good easter eggs of Leoâs ability to lead through the show, so it made great leg work leading into his movie journey. And thatâs why I think people gravitate to him as having main character energy.
