No but the history behind this picture is really interesting
The reason that everyone always looked miserable in old photos wasnât that they took too long to take. Once photography became widespread it took only seconds to take a picture.
It was because getting your photo taken was treated the same as getting your portrait painted. A very serious occasion meant so thst your descendants would know that ypu existed and what you looked like.
But one time some British dudes went to china to go on an anthropological expedition, and they met some rural Chinese farmers and decided to take their pictures. Now, these people werenât exposed to the weird culture of the time around getting your photo taken, so this guy just flashed a big grin during the photo because he was told to strike a pose and thatâs the pose he wanted to strike.
I think painted portraits and old photos give us the idea that in general people were just really unhappy because those are the visuals we have. This is so refreshing.

The fact that you have to call places you're applying to sometimes and be like "hey btw I applied. any news?" to supposedly "let them know you're interested" is like... so fucking stupid. like I fucking applied. call me back. While acknowledging the truth of the original statement, sometimes itâs just cool to know what other people do. (I am a boring corporate drone, I am fascinated by people who arenât.) That said, if you judge people as âless thanâ because of their job, youâre an asshole.

I couldnât agree more, you wouldnât believe how often I get looked at like im trash cuz I work in the construction industry.
Somebody on medium had a very interesting take on this question. They werenât being fully serious, but the take was interesting nonetheless. The article was called âHow to Be Politeâ:
Hereâs a polite personâs trick, one that has never failed me. I will share it with you because I like and respect you, and it is clear to me that youâll know how to apply it wisely: When you are at a party and are thrust into conversation with someone, see how long you can hold off before talking about what they do for a living. Just ask the other person what they do, and right after they tell you, say: âWow. That sounds hard.â
Because nearly everyone in the world believes their job to be difficult. I once went to a party and met a very beautiful woman whose job was to help celebrities wear Harry Winston jewelry. I could tell that she was disappointed to be introduced to this rumpled giant in an off-brand shirt, but when I told her that her job sounded difficult to me she brightened and spoke for 30 straight minutes about sapphires and Jessica Simpson. She kept touching me as she talked. I forgave her for that. I didnât reveal a single detail about myself, including my name. Eventually someone pulled me back into the party. The celebrity jewelry coordinator smiled and grabbed my hand and said, âI like you!â She seemed so relieved to have unburdened herself. I counted it as a great accomplishment. Maybe a hundred times since Iâve said, âwow, that sounds hardâ to a stranger, always to great effect. I stay home with my kids and have no life left to me, so take this party trick, my gift to you.
This strikes me as an excellent trick for introverts, because it invites the speaker to vent about their job and keeps us from having to talk.
