my general opinion on what people should be "allowed" to portray and what topics they should be "allowed" to explore in fiction is that you can make whatever art with whatever themes you want but i'm also allowed to think the way you handled it was tasteless and should've been done differently. my negative opinion on your handling of sensitive topics is the price of admission for publicly showcasing your work. this is not a pro-censorship stance because i am not The Government

For the record (even though I've said it many times before) this is my stance when it comes to people writing characters with a schizospec disorder or psychosis, especially from their point of view, when you have no personal experience. I can't stop you because I don't have any power over you, but I will say that it will probably be very shallow, full of misconceptions and stereotypes. I personally don't believe people should be theorizing the experiences of stigmatized minorities and sharing it with others who don't know that experience so they can all circle jerk their false beliefs without including the real people who actually live with th disorder. But that's just my opinion, I can't actually stop you.

youre not hijacking, this discussion definitely extends to issues of representation. if you don’t mind me asking, do you think there are ways for someone without personal experience with psychosis to portray psychosis in a respectful manner? like if someone were to seek out other people’s experiences and incorporate them to the best of their ability, would your opinion of the portrayal be more favorable, or is this topic just one of those things you feel is so difficult to portray that it’s basically impossible to get right from an outsider perspective?

I hate the push that you can quit addictions by pure willpower because it perpetuates the idea that people who can't have committed a moral failing of some kind. We all may know some people who did quit an addiction cold turkey, and with no aid, you may be one of them. And that's fantastic, but it is not the norm. It is more than okay to need help to quit an addiction. Relapse is also part of the process. Many people relapse several times before they are able to quit for good. Let's have compassion.

I have quit most addictions cold turkey and I HATE this narrative that that is a sign of superiority and strength. Someone who can't quit with willpower alone is not a failure. They're not weak. They're not "not trying hard enough." If you feel this lack of "success" is a sign of being inferior, educate yourself about addiction. If you still won't update your knowledge, at least have the decency to stfu.

like many people have said this better than me but no it IS odd that we've come to think of potatoes as so quintessentially european that their presence in historical fantasy where they're anachronistic doesn't jar. and yes people are trying to have the trappings of post-colonial europe without engaging w the icky colonialism part and yes people are neglecting to imagine what a european cuisine without potatoes would be like.
