He slid down the otherwise smooth bark to come to rest sitting at the base of the trunk. He felt slightly more numb to his situation after having sobbed for so long, and he patted his empty coattails listlessly. How did it all go so wrong? He shook his head, squeezed shut his eyes and held his bowed head in his hands for a moment. The lack of voices in his mind besides his own felt so strange, like he had walked into a silent room after too long in a crowd.

He lifted his head and opened his eyes again to study his hands in despair.
