Been wanting to do a series of posts on the Southeast Asian influences on Fire Nation culture. Lets start off simple:

Agni Kai Armbands

I didn’t notice it the first time I watched ATLA, but on repeated viewings I saw that all the characters would wear bands around their upper arms during official Agni Kais. I’m 99.9% certain these armbands (and the complimentary lack of shirts) were inspired by the prajiad (ประเจียด) bands worn in Muay Thai. Note the similarities:

According to multiple sources, the prajiad (ประเจียด) is believed to grant good luck to the wearer during battle. The armbands were traditionally fabric torn off a mother’s dress and tied around the arms. The symbolic act represented a mother’s blessing for the safety of the wearer.

This analysis is amazing, and I'mma YOINK it (with credit) the next time I write an Agni Kai scene.

Well I got good news for you kiddo, this website has you covered! Originally @modmad made a post about it, but her link stopped working and I managed to fix it, so here’s a new post. Basically, this is a costume rental website for plays and stage shows and what not, they have outfits for several different decades from medieval to the 1980s. LOOK AT THIS SELECTION:

so most of you know what ptsd is. a traumatic event happens (say, a house fire) and the brain sort of glitches in processing all that trauma. there’s flashbacks, nightmares, triggers etc. 

cptsd (complex post traumatic stress disorder) is -similar- but not the same. 

the main difference in diagnostic criteria being that cptsd happens as a result of prolonged trauma. trauma that goes on for months or years. being in an abusive home, being a victim of human trafficking, being in a cult, being stalked etc. 

cptsd does not currently have a place in the DSM, but there’s plenty of people advocating for it because frankly the process of treating trauma that lasted for half a lifetime is going to be different than the process of treating a single traumatic event.

i saw it described by someone earlier as when you have cptsd, you dont really know where the trauma ends and you begin. because it was prolonged, your brain just began to rewire to constant trauma as The New Normal. and that leads to some very different symptoms vs a singular traumatic event’s symptoms.
