This is a really small thing, but I wish the subs were a bit more clear that what Chi Cheng is saying here is just much more soothing and comforting in Chinese then "that's enough, don't cry, be good" is in English.

Chi Chen either says 后了(it's over/finished) or 好了(good enough) but either way, it implies something along the lines of it's okay, the worse is over or the worse has already happened which is a lot more comforting than "that's enough" IMO.

And 不哭了 does literally translate to 'stop crying' but it's in a much more coaxing/pleading and soft way, so more like please, stop crying, okay? rather than if someone were to say 'don't cry' as a command.

He also says 听话 which literally means "be obedient" (which they translated as 'be good), but also it's something a parent would say when they're soothing a kid who just skinned their knee and are helping them calm down and stop crying. I feel like "be good" in English has a much colder connotation, like he's telling Wu Suowei to suppress his sadness, and he very much isn't. The implication is more like listen to me, trust me, when I say things will be okay eventually.

Biting your boyfriend when you’re mad is a common enough joke/thing that there’s a running meme about handing your mans a stick or a towel to gnaw on and disinfecting his arm before you chomp him in rage. And I say joke or thing because regrettably my mom once had a dream where she got mad at my dad and she BIT HIM AWAKE and I have to live in a world where I have to know about this.

This is a sex dynamic I don’t think I’ve really seen elsewhere, but in Chinese relationships — especially if the couple is 30+ but generally after folks have gotten together — the sort of ongoing jokingly sexually aggressive person is usually the female partner. To the point where it’s ALSO a running joke that men will hide in the living room to sleep so they aren’t forced into sexual servitude by their partners. Or there’s one incredible Chinese TikTok bit where this guy is swaddled in his blankets looking all used up and wronged and his wife rolls out of bed pulling up her pants saying like “hey pretty good job today, keep it up,” and throws a bunch of random bills and vitamins at him while he cries and I cackled like a witch. (You can also see this in the extras of the Princess Royal, where our female lead is cheerful and great and our male lead is covered in hickeys crying about his back.) Probably an offshoot of yin/yang beliefs I’m guessing!

In episode 8, when Chi Cheng calls Suowei, and says what is subbed as “I’m going to fucking kill you,” it is actually a pun/homonyms(ish?) for “I want to fuck you to death,” which obviously our sweet stupid boy Suowei snarks back and interprets in the less phone sex murder sense until he actually clocks it when Chi Cheng is most the way to finishing while jerking off with the fucking belt I hate this show. I screamed like a panther through this entire scene. Tian Xuning is going to have to spend Chinese New Year alone in 2026 he absolutely cannot go home to the village after this.

I need everyone to consciously process that Dou Dou is calling Wu Suowei 舅媽 (jiu ma) which isn't 'aunt/aunty' in the generic way that 阿姨 (a-yi) is, but is the specific term used to address your mother's brother's wife.

So when his sister gives Chi Cheng a look after asking '舅媽?' and he nods, that's him confirming to her what his intensions are to Wu Suowei - this is the person Chi Cheng would marry if he legally could. This is Chi Cheng making it absolutely clear that Wu Suowei is not another one of his flings or short-term partners. This is serious.

And I adore the way Wu Suowei checks that Chi Cheng is okay with this before he wholeheartedly embraces it. He specifically refers to himself as 舅媽 when he says "your uncle (舅舅) and I (舅媽) will visit you" which is his own overt way of confirming to Chi Cheng's sister that they're on the same page. Like gender norms be damned, Wu Suowei will stand by his man and make it clear that he's proud to be his partner.
