Why do mantis shrimp eyes Do That (blink horizontal and look like they have three oval pupils)?
Great question! That horizontal “blink” and the three oval pupils are various tricks of the light as it bounces off the mantis shrimp’s triple-banded, highly-faceted eyes!
Mantis shrimp do not have eyelids, so they don’t blink—but they do clean their eyes frequently to keep things 20/20!
The eyes of mantis shrimp have three bands, each with a focal point. One mantis shrimp eye is therefore tri-focal, meaning they have depth perception with just one eye! Those three focal point “pupils” appear when the eye is looking toward the camera.
Each band is sensitive to different types of light, including polarized light, allowing mantis shrimp to see and communicate using visual signals that play across a huge visual spectrum!

Though called ‘treeshrews’, and despite having previously been classified in Insectivora, they are not true shrews, and not all species live in trees. The Volcano rabbit (Romerolagus diazi) is the world’s second-smallest species of rabbit. Found in mountainous areas of Mexico, it communicates using high-pitched squeaks, and is active at dusk and dawn. This rabbit is now listed as an endangered species, with only approximately 1,200 individuals estimated to survive in the wild.
I don’t normally go in for cute, fluffy mammals, but I think I’ll make an exception in this case. Who could deny the appeal of a furry blob like this?

pallas’s rosefinch is a small finch found in asia and europe. rosefinches live and forage in forests, feeding on seeds and insects in small groups. they are named for the soft rosy coloration that all rosefinches have in common. pallas’s rosefinch can be distinguished by its unique white markings. x
the razorbill is a member of the auk family found in subarctic waters of the atlantic ocean. they are the closest living relative of the extinct great auk. razorbills are monogamous and pair for life. during the breeding season, the female only lays a single egg. razorbills are agile birds that dive deep into the water to feed on fish and occasionally crustaceans. x
