the true driver of the day
The death of credible government is darkly hilarious in a cosmic sort of way. Obviously, the FDA is useless now. Therefore, we must place our trust in more credible institutions, such as Taco Bell, which has been far more transparent and proactive in handling this parasite business.

hearing anything about the nolan odyssey is so funny. it's like "they cut the extremely important and infamous nobody scene" "the cyclops is a giant puppet that they put in an actual historical cave + gave circe animatronics for her pig transformation instead of cgi" "they dumped plastic skeletons in an environmentally protected location they were not supposed to be in" "they recreated ancient greek instruments in order to have an accurate score" "all of odysseus's agency is basically gone" "anne hathaway actually learned how to weave ancient looms" "the women in this movie are treated like shit" "they actually buried actors alive to get those underworld shots" "did you see what the fuck zendaya was fucking wearing holy shit you can't DO THAT, MA'AM" "what do you mean there was a legitimate epic the musical reference" "NOT A SINGLE FUCKING GREEK WAS CAST IN THIS MOVIE"
like did nolan have two guys standing at his side at all times whispering ideas in his ear and one told the truth and the other told lies and they didnt tell him which was which until they wrapped production cause

(source) its so funny how actual Greek and Homeric scholars are talking about this movie vs the fact that people on tumblr are acting like Nolan personally dug up Homer's actual bones and pissed on them
I actually really dislike this framing of the whole thing.
This kind of assessment creates a false dichotomy of the Smart Reaction of Scholars and the Stupid Reaction of Hoi Polloi, when there are plenty of classical scholars (hi) who also very much dislike what Nolan has done with this text. My thoughts on the film are more aligned with the people bewailing the Nobody episode. Now not all those people have the toolbox I have for criticizing the film, and certainly some of them are being a bit myopic and histrionic about XYZ pet peeve, but that doesn’t mean that they’re seeing problems that aren’t there. I’m one of Martin’s fellow classicists, and I seriously disliked what this film was doing as an adaptation. I’ve had conversations with several of my colleagues who’ve seen the film and had similar thoughts to me. So putting it this way is at best an oversimplification, at worst insufferably smug and elitist.
And frankly, I think in this the year of our lord 2026, we can raise the bar higher than “All publicity about Homer is good publicity.” For one, I think we should also ask whether engagement with Homer, or with any aspect of antiquity, is well thought out and well crafted, or at least has some interest in the original beyond the surface—which as I note in my review linked above, I don’t think this is. And trust me, I know that Classics is kinda desperate for engagement right now and some professors are probably trying not to piss in anyone’s cornflakes lest we lose potential students. But when guys like Christopher Nolan (not one of Martin’s fellow classicists, but one of his fellow old white men with cultural capital) just use antiquity to bemoan the broad decline of civilization, I think we should question that. The film’s political resonances are weird and, to my mind at least, parrot a lot of conservative rhetoric. Nolan’s changes to the text are key to that; they are not neutral and have narrative and political implications. Regardless of whether or not he meant it to come off that way, I think it’s worth talking about, especially given the ways that classical antiquity, as supposed paragon of ~Western Civilization~, is utilized on the political right.
I think it's disingenuous to take two screenshots from that Variety article that make it seem like everyone agrees with Richard Martin's opinion that "Fellow classicists are happy with Nolan’s version because we all recognize it is a version," when that's not even true of other classicists quoted in the article itself. Joel Christensen makes several of the points that @gaius-sempronius-grackle also makes above:
From their tags, I see that OP meant that most classical scholars are less concerned with historical accuracy, and more concerned with the film's messaging—that's true for myself and most of my colleagues who have seen the film. But we need to be very clear that there is not a scholarly consensus on what that messaging should be, because classicists are not a political monolith.
I'm a professional classical scholar, and I'm not "happy with Nolan’s version." I recognize that it is a version, and there's validity to making huge changes when adapting a text. I have loved adaptations of Greek myth that are far less "accurate" than this (O Brother Where Art Thou comes to mind). But the changes that Nolan made are conservative, misogynist, and support imperialist ideas of "Western Civilization." We don't need to be praising him for casting the brilliant and beautiful Lupita Nyong'o as Helen when he only gives her three minutes of screen time, during which she is relegated to being Menelaus's punching bag.
Mark Hughes explained what the hell happened in Spa with the (multiple) deployment problems Mercedes-powered cars had and it's absolutely bonkers
This paragraph is pretty damning:
This is about the issues in qualifying, which was a different problem from the lap 1 issue that hit both Kimi and George, but by the circumstances of their positioning on the grid and what happened in those first five turns had different outcomes
You’re years too late to be recognizing the threat of US government mass surveillance, bud.
