I know this sounds dramatic but George Russell is, to me, the perfect reading of Cabanel’s Fallen Angel.
Cabanel’s angel isn’t burning, isn’t raging, isn’t monstrous. He remains too beautiful, too luminous. What condemns him is not ugliness but the excess of humanity in his gaze, suspended between wounded pride and contained pain, a tear that never quite falls, a perfect body that no longer belongs to heaven and yet refuses to surrender to hell.
George lives in that same liminal space.
He carries an aesthetic of purity that people insist on mistaking for fragility, too pretty, too polished, too posh. “Prince.” “Princess.” As if delicacy cancels ambition. As if emotional control means the absence of fury. What’s there, instead, is repression. Not emptiness.
Cabanel painted an angel who remembers heaven.
George is someone who remembers what was promised to him.
The angel is reclining, but not defeated. George looks calm, but never passive. There’s a quiet tension in the body, in the eyes, in the way he occupies space without asking, a well-mannered rage, pain dressed properly, a pride that doesn’t shout because it knows that when it does, it will be irreversible.
And maybe that’s what binds them most closely. They are not figures of spectacular downfall, but figures of waiting.
And maybe this is where the wanting comes in. I want George to be champion. Not as redemption, not as a narrative arc neatly resolved, but because waiting should not be a permanent state. Because dignity deserves reward. Because some falls are only pauses and some angels deserve to rise on their own terms.

It’s my birthday today and honestly I am asking for very little, only the necessary, only the kind of thing a girl asks the universe when she has been very brave and very delusional and has survived another year of being alive and emotionally attached to fast men in expensive cars.
I want George to smash qualifying like he is personally avenging every bad narrative ever written about him, I want him sharp and beautiful and unbearable, I want the car to obey him for once like destiny finally got tired of playing hard to get. And then I want Spa! God, I want Spa! I want him there with that cold heroic suffering energy, I want him taking the track by the throat, I want the whole thing to feel dramatic and stupid and holy.
And because it is my birthday and I deserve joy in its most deranged form, I want a podium that makes me lose my mind completely. Give me George. Give me Oscar. Give me Max standing there for tension, for narrative, for whatever ancient curse keeps making this sport homoerotic. Give me Geoscar crumbs. Give me Rustappen tension. Give me threesome as a religious experience. Give me something so insane that I have to sit down and stare at the wall afterwards.
This is not greed. This is birthday law. This is the universe owing me one good thing and me choosing to collect it in the form of George Russell domination, Spa drama, podium yaoi and the emotional collapse of everyone who ever doubted my beautiful, cringe, suffering British prince.

the first thing u need to understand about athletes is that they are cringe losers bc they skipped school in hopes of never having to work a real job. the second thing you need to understand abt athletes is that they are first and foremost workers whose years of lucrative labour are capped by the very real limit that the strain of that selfsame work puts on their bodies which means they retire at an age before most people's careers even really take off and are expected to get by for the rest of their lives on the money they earned those few years. the third thing you need to understand is that they want to fuck their coworker.

POWERING THE DRIVERS | A Day in the Life of Oscar. Presented by Dell Technologies.
Amir: You should drive a bit faster here.
Oscar: I actually need to drive a bit slower here so I can go faster here.
Oscar: A lot of people probably think that I'm in a race car all the time, but actually I'm in a lot of meetings and today I'm taking you with me.
I've got an engineering day in the sim, so preparing the next race that we've got coming up, looking back at the previous race a little bit as well, but mainly getting ready for the next race.
The sim days are always a little bit taxing because you're in a dark room for a lot of hours. It's mentally a bit draining because you're still concentrating as if you're driving a real F1 car. Obviously the physical side of it's not quite the same, but it'll be a good day.
Meeting with Henry. Juice Bar | 09:45 - 10:45 AM
Henry: I'm a performance engineer. That means my job is to help Oscar maximise how he interacts with the car. So that's how he drives the car in qualifying, looking at lots of data comparisons to our teammates, whether drivers around the field, understand how we can drive faster. Everything we do is through computers and IT based. There's very little that doesn't touch some sort of data analysis and kind of our day-to-day work.
Oscar: That's how I learn, looking through speed graphs, the throttle inputs, braking inputs. That's how we prepare and try and hit the ground running. Obviously the simulator itself is a massively advanced piece of technology and a lot of hard work and effort has gone into that to try and make it as realistic as possible.
Sim Session. Top Secret | 11:15 - 16:00 PM
Oscar: The simulator is the only real testing tool that we have. We're allowed to practice in real life anywhere near as much as we want. So the simulator being as close to reality as possible is the key for us.
It is very realistic in a lot of ways. The modelling, the physics behind it are very, very detailed and incredibly realistic. The g-forces are the one thing that you will never be able to replicate very well, unfortunately, but we get as close as we can. We have some motion, so we try to replicate it as best as we can.
Sim Debrief. Still Top Secret | 16:00 - 16:45 PM
Oscar: We debrief throughout the day. We've got a bunch of various different items we want to tick off, whether it be driving style things for me, car setup, new upgrades or developments, all kinds of things. So we're ticking off lots of different tasks the engineers will go away, look at some of the data and then normally we'll talk about it on the Thursday of a race weekend.
Amir: I'm Amir, one of Oscar's performance engineers. Joined the Oscar team this year.
Oscar: So Amir is new on car 81. A bit of a baptism of fire. It's been a big regulation set but it's been settling very well.
Amir: So this is just some data for the next race. We're just talking through driving goals and what we think we need to do to approach it in the right way.
Amir: You should drive a bit faster here.
Oscar: I actually need to drive a bit slower here so I can go faster here.
Amir: He's normally quite receptive to what we're telling him because we're often telling him lots and lots of things and he's quite chilled out given there's a lot to think about.
Oscar: It's a kind of new role in some ways for Amir because of the regulation changes this year, but it's been really good. Obviously there's a team of engineers around and making sure that everyone's working together cohesively is very important right from the start.
That was a day in the life on an engineering day. We'll see you next time.
