many such foolish cases :)
listen i'm not advocating for exotic animals as pets, but i really just feel like cheetahs are probably different
i feel like we need to give them another shot as housebeasts
this is a critter who wants greenies and then to take a nap on the couch next to me, and i KNOW it
cheetah in House perfec t size for put inside! inside very Soft and Comfort cheetah sleep soundly put cheetah in House. Put Cheetah In House. no problems ever in cheetah in ho use because good Happy and Satisfy for human where sleep. House yes a place for a cheetah put cheetah in house can trust cheetah for giveing good love to humans in house. friend cheetah
I mean, as someone who as worked in a zoo, this is fairly true.
Obvious disclaimer that you shouldn't have wild animals as pets.
But like, cheetahs are the only large cats that keepers will do free contact with. Hell, even most small cats don't get free contact. (Because small cats can be VICIOUS. They'll have a baby pallas cat wearing thicker gloves than when handling an owl. Because small cats can just be vicious.)
Like I think the only other cat at our zoo where I've seen free contact with was servals? Because I know they've used servals in shows to demonstrate their natural jumping ability. But I know servals can sometimes have a mean temper as well. Meanwhile they'll do the cheetah run and afterwards put the mic by the cheetahs and it's just like an engine with them purring. It's fascinating to watch when the message in every other large animal is "no free contact because it's dangerous even when they're born in captivity".
Legit if any wild animal could be adapted to a pet it would be cheetahs lmao. Only problem is they can be skittish and very anxious and that's why they're often raised around dogs in zoos to gain confidence.
congrats, i award you funniest take on this post
he want some..

extremely funny to me that Kermit the Frog is the only main overlap character between Sesame Street and The Muppets. imagine your day job is hanging out in a community of lovely people that genuinely just want to help kids learn and care about everyone so so much and then your night job is the reason that you have to stay up to date on your rabies AND tetanus vaccine
at noon the giant you're hanging out with is Big Bird! a wonderful fellow who likes reading stories and singing and telling fun facts! at midnight there's a giant named Sweetums who makes you feel like you're being hunted for sport
Ernie, trying to maybe come out to Kermit: well you know Kermit, me and Bert-
Bert: Bert and I
Ernie: Bert and I, we've been best friends forever, but we're also something else too!
Kermit, who every goddamn night has to tell Beaker and Bunsen to keep it professional, deal with Statler and Waldorf's bullshit, AND update his organizational chart on Dr. Teeth and the Electric Polycule: that's really great to hear fellas, happy for you two! :)
Grover, alarmed at having spilled some finger paint on Kermit's flipper: I am so sorry, Kermit. Please forgive me.
Kermit, who deals with a multitude of bodily fluids on his person and all over the theatre every evening, who is unintentionally trampled by large monsters as they exit the stage, and quite intentionally has his little froggy bones launched into a wall most nights by Miss Piggy: It's ok, Grover. I'm a frog. I love baths.
On Sesame Street: Oh, no, Telly is watching too much television!
The Muppet Show Theater, that night: Gonzo attempts to explain his latest fetish at length.

HELLO?????
Babysitting a toddler is a lot like being the narration in a point-and-click adventure game. Watching him knock on the doors of empty rooms and saying "hmm. I don't think anyone's in there". Watching him attempt to use [spoon] on [cat] and saying "I don't think those things go together". Watching him throw a cup of water onto the floor and just commenting "the floor is wet now" when he looks up at me to see if I approve.
the chain of events in this minute and a half clip is so extremely delightful and funny
kermit and scooter riffing on how their physicality doesn't let them open the envelope to announce the winner. the audience immediately cracking up when it cuts to statler and waldorf because they know what the bit is gonna be. jim henson slipping into the kermit voice accidentally before bouncing back at record speed and riffing on it. richard hunt genuinely laughing at jim's joke but doing so in-character. prime muppets was something else man

So I had a hysterectomy today (hooray!) and I brought along my stuffed orca, Shamu, as a comfort object. And everyone i interacted with during my pre-op was like "Oh! Who's this?" so I was telling them all about him, how he's been with me since I was 9 and gone on every single vacation and road trip, and they were telling me about their own stuffed buddies (one lady said she still has hers after 40 years!) and all of this while I was signing consent forms and providing a list of the things I'd brought with me, you know, small talk.
So then a nurse comes over and goes "Okay, I've got some stickers I'll put on your things so we know they're yours" and I'm like "OK cool" so she puts a sticker on my coat and stickers on my bags of clothes and then she turns to Shamu and I'm like "oh I guess he gets a sticker too"
But no. She pulls out a hospital bracelet that's an exact copy of mine and slaps it on his tail, like so:
And i was delighted by this, so I took a picture to send to my friends, who were equally delighted, and were cracking me up with their reactions (like so:)
Anyway, they take me back and put me under, and when I awake groggily a few hours later it takes me a minute to get my bearings, so I don't notice Shamu at first. But then I realize he's tucked up next to me in the gurney, so I grab him, and my hand touches gauze.
And I'm like "huh?" so I look at him and I realize
They gave my fucking orca a hysterectomy
So if I make a video about how to legitimately sedate a werewolf, should the tone be:
- Like a legitimate veterinary medicine lecture
- A monster hunterās quick and rough notes
- Detached/Retired academic assuming youāre about to do something stupid
Or something else?
I don't dislike the first one, but it feels like a "prerequisite superpower" situation that would require paranormal biology to be a field of science.
I'm not sure what exact trigger you have for the werewolf transformation in your setting; magical, mystical, incredibly advanced science/tech, but the strain on a body completely shifting form like that (and often also increasing in size) is tremendous.
By rl standards one transformation should put them in the hospital for two to three weeks. Even with enhanced regeneration it would take them out for, say four to five days at least.
The fact that the transformation, even if shown to be painful, usually has a werewolf functional again almost immediately suggests magical, mystical or incredibly advanced tech compensating for that strain, allowing a werewolf's physiology to push way past anything resembling a normal reaction to it.
And if the transformation process is understood well enough that vetrinary students are taught how to gauge the right dose for a sedation (and what goes into it in order for it to work) that implies a broader understanding of the paranormal in that setting, because something that can compensate for a strain on the body at the level of a complete physiological transformation should also be able to make short work of any sedatives.
Ergo, if sedatives do exist for werewolves it in turn implies something paranormal is invloved in making it/making it work.
I mean, it will probably invlove very small/exact doses of wolvesbane and powdered silver, but you might also get some solar-related stuff to partially negate or calm the lunar aspects of the werewolf's nature.
Unless it's a post-it note saying "Don't bother trying, just knock them out with brute force and use silver shackles."
...
Although, I do like the idea of a sun medallion blEssed by Ra/Helios/Amaterasu inbued with the feeling of a warm summer day just past noon that you hang around their neck and that makes them calm and sleepy. I also want one for myself.
Iām writing it as though āI do not know exactly what the process is, but these have the best chance of working anywayā.
Because, yes, something is no doubt supernatural in a werewolf, the process doesnāt matter so much as the output. A werewolf is still alive; it has a pulse and a respiratory rate, a brain where the consciousness resides, a liver and a digestive system. And honestly, in an emergency situation, thatās great. I can work with that, if I have to.
Metabolism is still a physical process. It requires molecules to physically bump into each other. And molecules take up space. At some stage, underneath anything āmagicalā a werewolf might have going on, there is still a living system under there. And thatās what Iām working with.
(And really, what is āmagicā other than a science we donāt understand enough yet?)
Like yeah, a couple of Valium tablets is going to do diddly squat with a werewolf hyped up on adrenaline. And fentanyl is so short acting that if a werewolf does have extremely fast metabolism, itāll be processed in about 2 seconds. But a whole bottle of zoletil? That stuff can knock out polar bears, and a whole bottle knocks a human down for about 20 hours. Even in a werewolf, itās a reasonable hypothesis that itāll do something.
Iām not talking about wolfesbane and spiritualism. Iāll be talking about what I can lay my hands on in a vet clinic. For legal reasons though, dosages are just going to be ālots, and do your bestā.
Because Iām making this as a guide that could be attempted with any type of lycanthropy, so it can be popped into any worldbuilding with a modern setting.

Is it possible to ābeatā mental illness? Or does it depend on type/circumstance?
āBeatingā mental illness is actually the norm, not the exception. Most people who have a major depressive episode never have another one. 80% of people who survive their first suicide attempt never make a second attempt. 93% of Borderline Personality Disorder patients achieve remission. Up to 74% of people with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder achieve significant clinical improvement in their symptoms, and 20% achieve full remission. Half of Generalized Anxiety Disorder patients achieve remission after the acute phase of treatment. Even disorders with relatively low rates of remission - bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoid personality disorder - generally become milder and easier to manage as you age. Psychiatric symptoms tend to peak in your 20s and generally drop off as you get older, especially if you seek treatment.Ā
This is why the narratives we use to talk about mental illness matter so much. Right now, the dominant narrative is that mental illness isĀ āan imbalance in the brainā and that itās largely something that people are born with. There are upsides and downsides to this. The upside is that it promotes the idea that mental illness is not the ill personās fault, and it helps us understand that mental illness can impact anyone, regardless of their life circumstances. The downside, however, is that itās sort of given us this idea that mental illness is inborn and unchangeable. People have taken on the idea thatĀ āthatās just how my brain isā, when the reality is that, for most people, mental illness is less of a stable trait for them, and more of just a shitty thing that they are going through for a little while. The idea that mental illness is justĀ āin your brainā also erases the very real connection between your life circumstances and your mental health - while itās very true that a wealthy person in a happy marriage can become depressed, itās also very true that living in poor conditions and being in an abusive marriage can be the cause of depression, and that improving your life circumstances can lessen or eliminate mental health conditions.Ā
If you have a mental health condition, itās very important that you not resign yourself to the idea that youāre going to be like this forever. Chances are, you wonāt. Even if you have a mental health condition that is associated with low rates of remission, it is possible to make leaps and bounds in your functioning, and to get to a point where managing your condition becomes second nature to you. Our understanding of mental illness is improving every year, and new therapies and treatments are becoming available all the time. If you seek treatment and do your best to manage your condition, you have every reason to believe that you will make huge improvements.Ā
Hope this answers your question!
