partially-managed mental illness is so fucking funny i'll be sitting around doing my job and suddenly think "wow i hate myself" and immediately get confused because, like, that's not TRUE! i love myself so much. who are you to talk to me like that
^ its like this
This is the 85 year old creator of Roger Rabbit:
sometimes Iām reminded that there are still people who donāt know ao3 was literally created by incest shippers ā and the siteās sole purpose is to 1. be completely against censorship and 2. host all kinds of dark, taboo fics that are banned on other platforms ā and the first ever fic that was posted on ao3 was a fic about an incest ship from supernatural.
you are in the house that was created by freaks. for freaks (affectionate). every disgusting thing you can think of is rightfully allowed and welcomed on ao3, because they are exactly the reasons why ao3 was created in the first place.
ao3 was created because its creators got tired of censorship, they got tired of dark and taboo fics getting banned on pro-censorship platforms, and they wanted a place that was safe for ALL FICS THAT WERE DARK AND TABOO.
ao3ās main principle is being against censorship and being proship / profic.
there are some things in fiction that make me uncomfortable, but instead of shaming people who are just minding their own business and not harming anyone in real life, I choose to curate my own internet experience by blocking/muting what I donāt want to see. ao3 has excellent tagging system, so instead of being rude, instead of asking why the world doesnāt revolve around your personal comfort, use their tagging system properly and you wonāt see the things you donāt want to see.
itās your job to curate what you see. itās not other peopleās jobs or responsibilities to censor themselves for your personal comfort. the world does not revolve around you.
also you cannot censor āonly the things you personally hateā without expecting everything else, that isnāt of conservative beliefs, to be censored too. because censorship is a slippery slope and a fascist tool. I promise you there are people who think āwhy do tags for queer love even exist on ao3? theyāre grooming childrenā.
if you allow the things that you hate to be censored ā because someone with enough power gets to control what other people can and cannot create/consume, it will not stop at the things that you hate.

I'm gonna say it, I do think that even the laziest person imaginable should have a roof over their head, food in their stomach, and access to healthcare
reading about the participation of children in rituals as a form of play in ancient greece and came across an incredibly charming story from julius pollux's onomasticon where a flood prevented the adults from reaching a sanctuary to sacrifice a ram to heracles, and the children solved the problem by....sticking a bunch of sticks in an apple to give it "legs" and "horns" and offering it as a sacrifice instead. it's such a charming thought and i can perfectly picture kids these days also pretending at sacrificing an apple "goat" at recess
catch me on the playground playing sacrifices
iām going to be really honest with you guys i think the tendency to read the absolute worst possible intentions into every action you donāt agree with is getting too automatic and itās eating you from the inside out
you can only reblog this if you're not racist

actually we should start headcanoning female characters as being terrible with children
stop mother-ifying fictional literally all female characters. that fictional woman would not know what the fuck to do with a child
This post is so funny like comment subscribe if you picture your favs bloodied and coughing on the floor and flinching
lol this person needs to read Vulture's David Cronenberg interview from a few years ago (it's paywalled, but you can access it through archive.ph here)
Louder for the people in the back:
... you cannot tell what an artist is going to be like personally from being very familiar with their art.
(incidentally, this article also talks about his film Crimes of the Future, which was super weird and which I really loved)
If your system doesn't account for the fact that Parents Are Going To Be Abusive/Neglectful/Insufficient then it objectively sucks I'm sorry I don't make the rules
Monitored bank accounts for those under 18. Requiring parental consent for medical procedures. Parental controls on personal devices. "We won't teach this at school because parents are supposed to address it at home." Anything that puts all of the child's power onto the parents' hand, anything that assumes parents are going to inherently do enough of a good job no one else needs to interfer, every single one of these IS going to be used by controlling, neglectful or unprepared parents and already are, and if the system did not account for that very real, tangible, dangerous tendency, then it's not worth fucking anything. You shouldn't make things "for the youth"/with children in mind if you are going to overlook this painfully common aspect of their lives u_u
When those GPS trackers for cars were released, specifically advertised for parents to put in their child's car, I saw the ad on TV and said out loud, "God... I wonder how many abusive parents and spouses are gonna use that to keep their victims from escaping."
My dad was sat next to me and his eyes got big as saucers. He was so quiet when he replied solemnly, "I didn't even think about that... jesus christ, that's dark..." and I had to tell him I had friends who were probably gonna end up in that situation with their conservative parents. He was so removed from the notion of using that device for cruelty that he didn't even CONSIDER it! That's how easily people can be bought in by inventions/legislation advertised under the guise of "keeping the kids safe". My own father, who is a beautiful and gentle man with a good head on his shoulders, was ready to advocate for a tracking device, because it was sold as a device to "protect children".
Children need more protections from abusers, yes, but the biggest protection they could possibly have is AUTONOMY. GIVE CHILDREN AUTONOMY.
unoriginal joke
I would actually go as far as to say that MOST abuse is unintentional. I think most people will go through their lives without ever experiencing intentional abuse. People are abusive because they're selfish, because they're stressed, because they care more about what society thinks they should do than the impacts of their actions on their children and partners, because they think what they're doing is correct, because they've made it make sense in their own heads, because they think they can fix their victims, they think they can fix their relationships, they think they can stop you from leaving, they think they can make you a better partner to them, they think that means you need to do what they want. We've sort of constructed mental illness in a way that doing this shit to other people counts as a form of mental illness because it is anti social behavior in the literal senseā it is behavior that causes social harm.
I don't say any of this to excuse it. I think everyone needs to be more aware of this because if you think abuse has to be intentional you will never realize you are capable of abusive behavior. You will never realize you are being shitty to the people you love, because YOU know what you mean, YOU know you don't mean any harm. But you're doing harm. You need to pay attention to the impact you have on other people, and you need to do it all the time, Especially when you feel least capable of doing so. Sorry! You live in a society. Get your head out of your ass.
I humbly offer this contribution.

I get in theory why people complain about het ships or whatever, I get wanting to watch queer media I really do, but I guess where yāall lose me is like. I saw some asshole on a post about Sinners complaining it was āhetslopāāthis person was specifically doing so while also claiming Remmick was a queer character and thus they were justified in caring more about him than the Black protagonists. which is a whole other disgusting can of worms that has been well addressed by others at this point. but even in the absence of that part of the argument, like, no, i actually donāt think that a hunger for queer stories is an especially good excuse to deride and dismiss a piece of landmark Black filmmaking, especially as a non-Black person. I have a post thatās been going around encouraging folks to engage with more Native stories and characters, and I had someone come onto that post saying in the tags that theyād need these stories to be queer in order to care. and I just think that, you know, sucks! like obviously as I queer Native also want to see more of those stories too. but idk how else to put it other than to say that Black people and people of color shouldnāt have to be like you in order for you to care about our narratives and experiences. and I think some of yāall are using this disdain for heterosexuality as a cover for your unexamined racial biases. itās not okay to be racist to people just because those people happen to be straight, and you continue to be white before you are queer.
So, I already hold the opinion that 3H's writing is misogynistic in a lot of core areas, but it becomes very glaring considering its reflection in the fanbase, especially in one key example.
Edelgard and Rhea are meant to be narrative foils. How successful that attempt was on the basis of story writing and plot cohesion is one thing, but a less talked about aspect of that is how they're both played for fanservice. Direct opposites, if you will.
Edelgard starts the game as a child. Okay a teenager going on 18, but nonetheless she's young. That was made as part of her appeal.
Her initial mask is one of dignity and authority; viewed as a figure above petty nonsense and to be respected and followed. Break apart her shell, however, and you get the childishness. You get to creep on her sleeping, you get to share promises on a tower, she gets to whine to you about wanting to eat sweets instead of work, you get to make her blush when you praise her ideas, you can tease her about her scream when encountering a rat, you can walk in on her literally doodling your face on a piece of paper before she locks herself in her room for the following exploration phase.
In short, you get to be the one getting reactions out of her. You get to prod and tease. You get to dote and pull away her facade.
Now Rhea? She's the opposite. Like Edelgard, she too has a front of serene authority about her. She commands respect and reverence. But what do you get with Rhea when you bond with her? You get the mother figure.
Rhea's the one who dotes on you. She's doing the teasing, the prodding questions, the gentle reassurances, the compliments, and the ooey-gooey stuff.
Similar scenarios given how they're both fairly misogynistic depictions of strong women in an effort to get a male player to fall for them, but they're decisively different approaches. And nothing makes this clearer than fandom reaction.
Edelgard's childish, almost ingenue-like cuteness is seen as a facet of her character, one that's understood as not her entirety. Even if it's very explicitly reserved for Byleth, people are easily able to delude themselves into thinking that it could emerge with her other relationships.
But Rhea? She's only seen as this overbearing, controlling force. A creepy presence. Because she's the one doing the sweet talk.
A huge part of that is, of course, screen time and access to each character. Edelgard has a full support log with 10+ characters, Rhea only has Byleth. Edelgard is omnipresent in all routes, Rhea is MIA for most of 2 routes and flat out disappears in another. Byleth's (Your) first action is personally saving Edelgard from getting axed in the gut, while the first thing you know about Rhea is that she's untrustworthy per words of Jeralt.
There's intent behind this of course. Rhea is the red herring set up to be a tyrannical problem before re-railing into being the damsel in distress, while Edelgard the cute and sentimental gal you saved turns out to be an extremely violent imperialist. Obviously this was not that successful given the fanbase we see today. And part of that is that these very depictions are double edged swords.
People are not so easily swayed from first impressions. That includes the very makers of these stories, hence why Crimson Flower exists at all. They will see these intentional, calculated character choices and glue any and all future interpretations to them, hence why there's even more ushy-gushy Edelgard moments in CF and Rhea loses her sanity and becomes more erratic in speech. At that point, for a lot of people, it doesn't matter the context behind it, that it's clear that Edelgard's gap moe moments are bait for weirdos to be intentionally suckered in, and Rhea's trauma buttons are being constantly smashed, because you're in CF. It's a route where you abandoned moral convictions for what felt good at the moment despite all the evidence staring you in the face.
I could go on, like how I feel that a lot of people actually have some bad unchecked internalized misogyny regarding these differences between them. Another example is, despite Edelgard taking part in just as many, if not more, violent acts as Rhea (and to deeper degrees IMO), she can get away with it because she remains calm, collected, and measured. She remains pretty, even in her voice acting. Notice how Edelgard hardly ever screams or yells? Compare that to Rhea, who gets to wail and holler and roar? Rhea gets to have ugly moments, where composure is the last thing on her mind. That's uncomfortable, and it's not what's marketable for a woman character. And for most people, it doesn't matter how aware they are, they can still fall victim to being misogynistic, even unintentionally, when they hold one woman to a standard that they don't apply to another, with the key difference being in how they carry themselves.
Misogyny, it'll get ya.
