this post is inspired in part by this one by @cheshirepirouette and sponsored in part by convos w @asteriis and @indouscurse hereโs to yโall!! this post also goes out to my brothers, who are pale as hell for reasons unbeknownst to all of us (this is a joke).
like any good headcanon, this started as a joke because i thought to myself: Ryland sounds like the type of name that somebodyโs Black child would have and only use on church sundays. nobody actually has ever called him that in his whole entire life, except maybe his mama SOMETIMES and thatโs why he doesnโt remember it right away. i feel like every Black person knows somebody who is called literally anything except their god given name. people call him lil r, lil grace, gracie, ry, ryry, riri, RG, lando, mr. grace, dr. grace, but nobody calls him Ryland, which is part of why he Canโt Remember for so long.
so of course i went back to the source material to see if he ever actually mentioned being white anywhere and unfortunately it is very much at the beginning of the book. so THEN i started to think about how i could get around that while remaining at least largely canon compliant (as a little treat for myself). what i came up with is what i have affectionately dubbed my โlitebrite babyโ headcanon.
grace was not particularly dark skinned to begin with, and then spent years in a coma with literally no sunlight. he is downright vampiric by the time that he wakes up, and upon seeing his white ass skin, assumes that he is in his own words, a Caucasian male.
unfortunately for him, this fits in really well with his theme of lack of identity and lack of connection. i think for most Black people it would be extremely hard to forget that weโre Black regardless of how light or dark our skin tone is. but throughout the book, even when Grace is thinking about his old, slowly resurfacing memories, he never thinks about family, he never thinks about friends. except for his students and Project Hail Mary, he is completely unmoored.
iโve seen a few different headcanons for why this might be: he was an only child whose single parent died young, he was cut off by his parents for some reason or another, he just isnโt ever triggered to remember. but no matter the reason, grace is disconnected from crucial aspects of himself. i think that by making him Black, and his Blackness something he canโt remember, it add an extra heartbreaking layer to his characterization. Blackness is such a communal experience, and when itโs not, it leaves behind an ache. growing up Black in White Suburbia i know well both the experience of clinging to oneโs own in a hostile world AND the hurt that comes with being severed from oneโs community. grace loses so much of himself with the amnesia, unable to recall who he is at the deepest of levels, and i think if he could remember to grieve it, it would devastate him.
i do think he would remember eventually, either when his hair starts growing out (because in the book Armando shaves him iirc), or when he can finally catch a glimpse of his reflection clearly, or when he has a memory of someone in his family. my personal belief is he has a memory beamed directly into his brain of asking โMama, am I white?โ and his poor, long-suffering mom saying, โNow who the hell told you that?โ
and then it still never becomes relevant because he has negative desire to explain the nuances of human racial categories to an alien who quite literally cannot see color.
I'm having a very niche but exciting experience. I saw a fic on a rec list with the basic pitch of "you get so swept along by the divergences of premise A that you don't notice any of the other weird stuff until you suddenly find out it's actually about the secret and hidden premise B," then I clicked the link and recognized the obscure lyric being used for the title, which I'm guessing is probably giving me a hint about the nature of premise B. oh ho ho.
Iโm looking for a PHM text post and I was wondering if youโd seen it. Rough summary: โConsidering how little we know about Graceโs personal/family life before the Hail Mary project because he never brings it up, I wonder if his early memories ever came back or if the kid named Ryland died that day Grace was tackled to the ground.โ Thanks!
I know Exactly what post you mean and it's killing me that I don't remember it in clear enough detail to be able to find it. I neither remember the exact phrasing nor whose blog I saw it on I Am Going To Die.

the book scene where dubois and shapiro tell grace theyโre having sex is really interesting. itโs not just thatโs heโs uncomfortable talking about sex (although he very much is) itโs that he doesnโt understand why they would have sex if one of them is guaranteed to die in space soon. they kind of included this in the movie (when he asks stratt why everybody is partying and hooking up if theyโre all gonna die)
thereโs another line that stood out to me in the book, where amnesiac grace initially finds his dead crewmates, and he goes โi hope they werenโt friends of mine!โ which imo is a crazy thing to say upon finding two corpses
itโs not just that grace avoids forming close relationships, itโs that he avoids it (in part) in order to avoid experiencing loss. really interesting character trait especially knowing he has no immediate family (did they die? is that why heโs like this?) not even a pet (is he scared the pet will die?)
you may have noticed that my story is disorganized and thematically incoherent and my plot structure is weaker by the verse. this is commentary on the chaos of mortal existence under the yoke of the immortal gods
cant believe andrea sachs had the opportunity to be the right hand woman of someone called the ice queen and got to see her be emotionally vulnerable in what was probably a once in a century opportunity just to leave it all for her lame ass boyfriend . Fumble of the freaking century
The funniest thing about Marty Supreme is that the first like 40 minutes it plays like a normal rags to riches sports movie but then the following next two hours feel like this

Something you realise experiencing musical theatre primarily via cast recordings is that, separated from the spectacle of the stage, from a lyrical standpoint a lot of very well-regarded stage musicals are very bad.
do you have a link to the fic you just mentioned in the tags??????? i need to read that
YOU ABSOLUTELY DO. more movie than book in terms of personalities, but i adore the eridian culture worldbuilding it does (which borrows heavily from book canon). FANTASTIC rocky characterization too, it's kind of incredible how reframing his actions in grace's body made me reapproach his body language in the movie.
i feel like your group of close knit characters would work better less as a found family and more as a ride or die indie rock band a la lemonade mouth. โwhos the mom friendโ shut up. whos the bassist.

earlier today i told an acquaintance in passing that i'll often be in the middle of a novel and think "man i wish this shit were more ambiguous" and had to reiterate twice that i wasn't being sarcastic before they believed me, so this post is to say: i love when writers don't bother to explain everything, i love when stories end uncertain and unsettling, i love being required to think as a reader, i love when stuff makes no damn sense, no i'm not kidding
