I don't have much in the way of process details (at least none that are interesting lol), but I will say there's a thing implied in this chapter which I thought would be incredibly obvious but which is, based on the feedback I'm getting, not in fact all that obvious so WHOOPS.
The guy in the flashback is meant to be Mauer - I fear I did not write him creepy enough and/or make it clear enough that he was wearing a "disguise" (fake moustache). I think I've been working on this thing too long and sorta forgot that things that have been "canon" to the fic(s) inside MY head for months are not, in fact, going to come across clearly if I do not write them clearly enough lol.
It is entirely my fault obv, I already knew that he was going to (had already?) attend(ed) the funeral back when I was still writing the last few chapters of Black Mile, thus why he mentions meeting Devon (and also the funeral) in his lil villain monologue, but I have realized too late that he doesn't explicitly mention that meeting being AT the funeral, so. Whoops. (Idk I may go back and edit that little section in the latest chapter to make it a bit clearer which I may have already done very slightly since posting shh)

yeah hi this is Desmond. we found this weird bunker on the deserted island and cracked it open and found the nice guy Jack met on a run several years ago inside. he's not really normal any more but you wouldn't be either after three years in the OCD Simulator. he's a very pleasant Scottish man who just wants to live his life and love his Penny but unfortunately Situations keep happening. he runs off wildeyed into the jungle and turns back up on his weird little sailboat. he blows up the OCD Simulator and promptly gets a new form of OCD that has him following the strange little former rockstar around, wringing his hands in angst and giving him apologetic looks, and immediately darting in front of him all like "no let me" and doing anything dangerous for him. once that whole saga reaches its tragic conclusion he immediately contracts Really Bad Jet Lag™️ and nearly dies. meanwhile, for him Personally there's this whole subplot throughline about how fear of losing what we love can drive it away faster than the things we're afraid of and how loving and knowing we're loved in return is sometimes all we need to keep going and how love bears all things believes all things hopes all things endures all things love never ends. and how that love just might end up being what gets them rescued in the end. also he has just the most INSANE dad lore. just casually dropping into conversations the time he was a monk or when he did bomb squad for a few months before getting kicked out of the army or sailing around the world. also he has a special interest in the works of Charles Dickens. and his favorite song is Make Your Own Kind Of Music by Cass Elliott.
