I find the “no makeup makeup” trend so much more insidious than normal makeup tbh. Ideally women should be comfortable with their bare face but the self expression tagline so commonly used only works if you’re using actual colors, bright eyeliners and blue eyeshadow or black lips etc etc. I still have my gripes with the industry but that is at least an actual fashion statement. Meanwhile the clean-girl glowy look markets itself as being more natural while actually prying on deeper insecurities and trying to pretend you don’t have all these tiny “flaws” that make us human, selling a dozen products with the goal of making it look like you use nothing but sunscreen, mocking girls who try too hard while also not trying hard enough, it’s an endless cycle of consumerism and body dysmorphia.

Additionally, inheritance laws especially in English law used to be very strict about what wives and daughters could receive. Most of the property when a person died would go to a male heir even if that person left a wife or older daughter. This could even include the very house a woman was living in when her husband died. Cue Jane Austen and other writers of this era who discuss problems of women’s legal dependence. At certain times women could not hold land, houses, or bank accounts but they could take more personal property like jewelry or dresses. Women had to be conscious of the value of their clothing and jewelry because it could someday mean the difference between penniless or able to afford a place to live after your husband or father died.

Men create a system that only benefits other men yet women find a loophole to give them one thing to survive on and men still insult women for holding on to that loophole.
