“The LEGO Movie was my favorite movie of 2014, but it strikes me that the main character was male, because I feel like in our current culture, he HAD to be. The whole point of Emmett is that he’s the most boring average person in the world. It’s impossible to imagine a female character playing that role, because according to our pop culture, if she’s female she’s already SOMEthing, because she’s not male. The baseline is male. The average person is male. You can see this all over but it’s weirdly prevalent in children’s entertainment. Why are almost all of the muppets dudes, except for Miss Piggy, who’s a parody of femininity? Why do all of the Despicable Me minions, genderless blobs, have boy names? I love the story (which I read on Wikipedia) that when the director of The Brave Little Toaster cast a woman to play the toaster, one of the guys on the crew was so mad he stormed out of the room. Because he thought the toaster was a man. A TOASTER. The character is a toaster. I try to think about that when writing new characters— is there anything inherently gendered about what this character is doing? Or is it a toaster?”
— Bojack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg commenting on how weird gendered defaults in entertainment are, and why we should think twice about them. Excerpted from this longer original post. (via 360degreesasthecrowflies)

In 70 countries - that comprise 26% of the world population, women need men's permission to learn, work, or travel. There are 50 countries in which the law states you can sell and buy women into marriage. - These countries, including India and Pakistan, make up 38% of the entire world. There are 178 countries that do not have the same legal rights for women, where written law specifically excludes women from freedom. There are 2.4 billion women globally who are born in countries that have written law that restricts them completely, but even more so without a man. 6 billion people believe in a religion that states that women are less human than men.
This is Emily Willis, an infamous rape on tape actress who suffered a cardiac arrest in a drug rehab facility. She suffered brain damage while unconscious and is now in “locked in syndrome”. She cannot walk or talk and probably never will. She is 26.
Naturally, men are asking if she will keep doing porn in this state. She cannot consent, at all. Her “doing porn” would be her getting raped, having it filmed, and then uploaded for other men to masturbate to. Some are even volunteering themselves to rape her.
Never ask me to ever give a single fuck about men’s rights while they’re saying this shit without shame on the internet. They're admitting they either masturbate to rape or would rape given the chance. This is the demon that the porn industry creates. Women and children, disabled or able bodied, dead or alive, have to suffer from this disgusting and inhumane industry. A porn actress dies, or is left permanently paralyzed, and all men say is “I wish I could fuck/rape her” “I’m going to masturbate to videos of her clearly suffering”. This just proves my theory that the ultimate male sexual fantasy is rape. And I’m supposed to care about Men’s Mental Health?
Emily, who’s actually Litzy, was my friend, though a brief friendship. And I must add that she was ALSO sex trafficked by a John who was involved with Girls Do Porn, which had been investigated and found guilty of human sex trafficking.
This is what you support when you defend pornography.
"there are observable biological differences between men and women that unfairly advantage men in a world designed by and for men" DOES NOT MEAN "women are inferior to men" or "women aren't good enough to keep up with men"
It means we have to account for those differences in the name of equity and equality - which doesn't mean women need ~special treatment~ or kid gloves, it means we have to remove barriers to equal opportunity.

Remember when everyone knew the YouTube CEO by name and blamed her personally for everything wrong with YouTube when the CEO was a woman? And how when she was replaced by a man people didn't do the same to him despite YouTube getting worse and worse? I wonder what the reason for that might be 🤔
on psychologytoday.com if you search for therapists and select "female" in the filter then there's a little blurb at the bottom of the page politely chastising you for preferring a female therapist, and even suggesting you need to unpack some things if you prefer a woman. they use phrasing like "believe", "imagine", and "adhering too rigidly to a gender preference".
if you search for male therapists, the blurb totally changes and encourages prospective clients to start with a therapist they feel comfortable with. sexism is baked into e v e r y t h i n g
In the blurb on male therapists, it says "Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy"
But zero comment made about the many, many reasons a woman may not want to work with a male therapist. Because it's okay for women to distrust other women (those gossipy hags!), but god forbid a woman have a single hesitation over sharing her deepest trauma with a man (our reliable and steadfast protectors).
Every aspect of society wants women to hate other women. We need to do everything we can to prevent that.
They've really managed to pack an incredible amount of sexism in a handful of paragraphs.
They've got a whole bit about how men can benefit from male therapists "being on the same page more quickly" when it comes to "gender specific challenges" with multiple broad categories of challenge mentioned in the first paragraph, meanwhile women "believe" that a female therapist "will be able to relate to their specific challenges" with only one very specific challenge mentioned.
The underlying implication is that female-specific challenges aren't really a big deal, they're something individual that a female therapist would be no better at understanding or relating to than a man. Meanwhile male-specific challenges are framed as universal for men and highly important, something a female therapist would have to be brought up to speed on.
Kinda wild how the concept of emotional labour changed from
"people have to hide their emotions to perform specific types of labour where their apparent emotions influence another person's. Eg. Flight attendants have to be cheerful all the time, so that passengers feel welcome and safe. This suppression and masking of emotion can cause a sense of disconnect within the individual where they dont know what their true feelings are. This is part of the Marxist idea of alienation from labour and from the self."
To
"If you ask me to care about you or listen to your problems, youre being toxic."
CAKE AND FUCKING DRESSES AND PASSIVITY???
TRAS ARE MRAS.
female describes a human body, not a personality
this mindset has been so healing for me. a big part of my journey to self-acceptance has been unlearning the ways in which my culture told me that my female body dictated how I should behave. now I just focus on existing, just like any other mammal.

women have to live with the constant awareness of the possibility of getting raped even in the most innocuous of situations, and people still have the audacity to present this awareness as drama and fearmongering. if you help out an elderly man with getting his groceries into the house and he rapes you, you are the dummy for not thinking it through. but if an elderly man invites you into his house on the pretense of needing help with the groceries and you refuse, you are a paranoid (and heartless!) bitch. schrödinger's rapists: every man could be one, but also no man is, so how dare you think about it.
don't shave your legs this summer HOLD THE FUCKING LINE
the hair literally makes you less sticky
If you spend any time where there’s ticks you can better feel them on your legs with leg hair. More leg hair = less tick bites
Have you felt the breeze in your leg hair? It's magical. Feel that breeze.
SWERFs frequently call sex workers "fuckhole" or "sex toy" or "blow-up doll" or "cumdump" or worse, framed as an acknowledgement of how clients view us. If criticized, they'll claim we should be more focused on violence from clients than words. They say paid sex is rape and that all clients think of us this way.
Answer me this: if they really believe that, how do they justify throwing the words of rapists back at their victims to distress them?
what the fuck are you talking about
Oh. I know you. Not you specifically, but I know you. I worked with dozens of you on the DV circuit.
I remember once when I was dealing with one of you, who had a broken glass shoved up her vagina, and she was crying that she didn't want to go to the police, the police weren't safe, the hospital wasn't safe, I pointed out her client had done this to her. Her "work" wasn't safe.
Not the police. Not the medical workers who are mandatory reporters.
And she started going on about how this was something she could cope with, and it was her job, and she is an ADULT, and "these things happen" and if we could just stitch her up and stay quiet, everything would be fine.
She was traumatised, and 21, and she couldn't afford to live, so she "wanted" to continue being violently assaulted and raped for cash, to continue living. Because she didn't see an alternative. And we, the people patiently offering her medical assistance, were the enemy. Our words were worse than their violence. We were infantilising her. We were restricting her options. We were trying to ruin her "career", be saying that there is a life outside of paid rape.
She is now one of the fiercest advocates against prostitution, and is working towards her masters in social work. It took many, many rapes and brutalisations to get there, none of which she deserved and none of which should ever have happened to any of the girls we regularly saw.
You have given us a beautiful, intensely fucked up glimpse into the mind of a sex worker who has entirely internalised their trauma and is trying to get others to do the same. I would not use those words, and I never have, but mark me: the rape does worse to your Psyche. The trauma is worse than the angry women. The fact that you have distanced yourself from women and your own body does not make women angry about your continual pushing of sex work a worse enemy than male rapists and violators.

CNN
—
The number of US adolescents admitted to emergency rooms for injuries related to sexual abuse more than doubled between 2010 and 2016, according to a new study. For kids ages 12 to 17, the number increased from 2,280 in 2010 to 5,058 in 2016.
The study, published Monday in JAMA Pediatrics, found that the number of emergency department admissions for child sexual abuse jumped from 5,138 in 2010 to 8,818 in 2016, an increase of more than 70%.
The authors don’t know why the cases have gone up.
“Rates of child sexual abuse have fallen overall since the mid-’90s,” said author Jesse Helton, an assistant professor of social work at the College for Public Health and Social Justice at Saint Louis University. “We know that sexual abuse cases are hard to measure, but overall with the rates going down, it should be seen as alarming that the rates are going up in the ERs.”
More than 85% of the children being treated for sexual abuse in this report were girls.
“The authors don’t know why the cases have gone up.”
But we do, don’t we?
