And don’t even get me started on the use of the word “grooming” in the film, coming from the personification of the institution that is built on the backs of young black boy’s pain. That word choice, alongside the scenes of Cameron being outright grabbed, or the scene where he’s told to strip in a room full of people as his vision and hearing distort, are the exact bits of the film that have people complaining. “No substance”/“divisive ending” when they are served the message directly to their faces and still don’t see it. Complaining that football isn’t horror as if the very foundation of sports themselves are not a horrific concept. Putting people in situations where they have to exert their bodies, sacrifice their youth, and perform for the entertainment of people who cheer for their demise. That IS horror.
