Yamato (One Piece)

Identity: Trans man, explicit Notes: Explicitly referred to as a man and with he/him pronouns throughout the source despite being AFAB. Propaganda: 1. “His father is a tyrant violating every human right in the books, but he supports his son in his transition 👍” 2. “He is amazing representation! Dispite not physically transitioning he fully claims his identity as a man and all those around him accept him as one including his abusive dad who doesn’t accept any other parts of who he is. He’s even allowed to go into the men’s bath with the other boys.” 3. “It’s unfortunate that a lot of outside media for One Piece is inconsistent on how it treats Yamato, but at least in the manga, he is 100% treated as a man and there is nothing that goes against that claim, and anyone who still believes Yamato isn’t really trans is at best misinformed and at worst an actual transphobe.”

Enji Todoroki/Endeavor (My Hero Academia)

Problematic because: "Familial abuse, human trafficking(he bought his wife), implied marital rape, child neglect, child grooming" Propaganda: "He and his family are such an accurate representation of some people in that situation. Enji hurts his family, grooms two of his four children into being pro heroes(because he hates his own weakness and wants those two kids to be the strongest), drives one of his kids to what is basically a suicide attempt just to get his attention back, abuses and isolates his youngest child until he's 15/16, and neglects his two middle children because they don't have his fire quirk. After the whole war against the villains thing, he realizes that he fucks up and he tries his damn best to atone. He doesn't ask for redemption or forgiveness, but just atonement. And his family is all mixed up about it. His wife helps take care of him(he's in a wheelchair after the war), his daughter helps as well, his youngest WANTS to see him become better, his second youngest left because he can't stand seeing him changing(fair enough), and his oldest is in the hospital after trying to kill himself for the second time, and he is still glad because Enji comes and visits him in the hospital. Basically, I really really love their story, and Enji doesn't deserve all the hate he gets in the MHA Fandom because he genuinely did change, but he still did fucked up things for 24/25 years and he acknowledged that."

vs. John Murphy (The 100)

Problematic because: "Pissed on a guy, killed a couple people, tried to kill a couple more, generally irritating and uncooperative." Propaganda: "He’s a delight trust me. He has some really good character development after season 1 and he’s also literally unkillable. They have tried to kill him so many times they just can’t do it. He’s wonderful"

Billy Loomis (Scream)

Problematic because: "He and Stu murdered Sidney’s mother Maureen a year before the first film, framed Cotton Weary for it, and then Billy kept dating Sidney while secretly blaming her family for his mother leaving. The 1996 killing spree is basically his revenge plan - kill Casey and Steve, terrorise Sidney, kill more people around her, then frame Sidney’s father Neil as the killer so Billy and Stu can look like the final surviving victims. The exact split of who physically does every Ghostface attack gets debated, but Billy is the planner/emotional centre of the whole thing, and his reveal makes the boyfriend behaviour beforehand so much nastier - the “trust me” guilt-tripping, the fake hurt feelings, sleeping with Sidney right before the reveal, all while planning to destroy her life." Propaganda: 1. "He's such a good slasher villain because he’s scary in two completely different ways. Ghostface is the obvious part - the calls, the knife, the costume, the horror trivia, the whole theatrical murder-game setup. But Billy himself is the more personal horror. He’s Sidney’s boyfriend. He’s in her bedroom. He’s the person acting wounded when she doesn’t trust him enough, while he knows exactly why she shouldn’t. He isn’t just killing random people for fun, even though he’s clearly enjoying parts of it. He takes a real piece of pain - his mother leaving after his father’s affair with Maureen - and turns it into this insanely entitled revenge fantasy where Sidney has to pay for what the adults did. He’s manipulative, self-pitying, cruel, and way too good at looking like the brooding boyfriend instead of the guy writing the final act in his head. Terrible man. Perfect Ghostface." 2. "He’s so good because he’s not even subtle once you rewatch. The dramatic hair, the wounded stares, the way he keeps making Sidney’s trauma about whether HE feels trusted enough. Sir, she is being stalked by a masked killer and you are actively the masked killer. Maybe give her a minute. And the motive is such a perfect mix of sad and pathetic. His family blew up because of his dad and Maureen, and instead of blaming the grown man who actually cheated, Billy decides Sidney’s mother deserves to die and Sidney deserves to be psychologically destroyed. It’s teenage-boy rage taken to slasher extremes, with Stu along for the ride"

vs. Yazoo (Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children)

Problematic because: "Yazoo is one of the three Remnants of Sephiroth, along with Kadaj and Loz. He helps search for Jenova’s remains so Sephiroth can return, fights Cloud and the Turks, and takes part in gathering children with Geostigma by promising them a cure/reunion with “Mother.” Those children are already sick and vulnerable, and Yazoo helps use them as tools to find Jenova. He also helps attack Edge after the children lead the Remnants back there, and near the end, he and Loz confront Cloud and set off the explosion that almost kills him after Sephiroth is defeated." Propaganda: "He has such a distinct presence despite being the quietest of the three Remnants. Kadaj gets the main emotional arc, Loz gets the more obvious physical/emotional contrast, and Yazoo is colder and more controlled. He doesn’t need to do as much to stand out. He adds balance to the trio. He’s calm, stylish, sharp, and a little detached, which makes him work well next to Kadaj’s intensity and Loz’s more childish reactions. He isn’t the deepest FFVII character, but he has a very clear visual and tonal role."

Kikunojo (One Piece)

Identity: Trans woman, explicit Notes: Refers to herself as “a woman at heart” and is consistently treated as a woman with she/her pronouns. Propaganda: 1. "Tall samurai lady 😍" 2. "She is a very tall samurai hellbent on getting revenge for her fallen lord and accomplishing his goal of freeing and opening their nation. Shes an idol, i love her"

vs. Alistair Hammerlock (Borderlands)

Identity: Gay, explicit Notes: Refers to male exes in-game, and later marries Jakobs (a man). Explicitly referred to as gay by Anthony Burch. Propaganda: 1. "he’s competent without needing to prove it every second. he knows his stuff. he’s brave in a quiet way. he’s also got a mean sense of humour when someone’s annoying him, and it’s always delivered so politely that it’s ten times funnier. plus he feels like someone who’s genuinely excited about what he does - not in a loud way, just steady enthusiasm, like he’s happy to share knowledge as long as you’re not being an idiot about it. he’s just a delight to have around in a series where everyone is yelling all the time." 2. "He’s just incredibly easy to like. He’s witty, charming, a bit pompous in an endearing way, and has that whole enthusiastic gentleman-explorer thing that makes him stand out immediately in a series full of louder, harsher personalities. He brings a different kind of energy to Borderlands, and the games are better for it. It’s also genuinely cool that he’s a disabled amputee on top of being one of the series’ most prominent gay characters. That kind of combination still is not nearly as common as it should be, especially in a big, well-known game series. And with Hammerlock it doesn’t feel like he exists to be inspirational about it either - he gets to be funny, capable, fussy, adventurous, and fully part of the world. That makes him feel like an actual character first, which honestly makes the representation hit better, not less."

You get to marry him to his husband after a very stressful day of chaos and possession, and then you get to go have a party with other characters to celebrate it!

And everyone is so happy for them!

They're the first gay wedding I've seen in a shooter-looter-story type game!
