Like, people who write good horror aren't immune to what they write. Horror writers don't sit down and think "Muhaha, I'm so brave for creating this scary thing". Good horror writers are terrified of what they create, and as Mary Shelley put it, "what terrified me will terrify others". Good horror writers wake up from a nightmare in a cold sweat, and their first thought after "holy shit I'm alive" is "Man, that'd make a good story".

H. P. Lovecraft revolutionized horror because he wrote down the things that gave him nightmares. The man wasn't just racist, he was xenophobic, in the truest sense of the word. Every single thing that wasn't his own tiny world terrified him. When you read his works, they aren't about how Non-White People Are Evil, they're about the world is evil, and everything in it is too except the few things he'd been taught were good. Cthulhu isn't scary. Non-white people aren't scary. The scary thing, as Lovecraft presents it, is that Cthulhu could even exist, and that non-white people would (in his mind) side with him. Great Old Ones, alien gods, people of color, air conditioners, all of them are symbols of a world that he didn't understand and that terrified him beyond belief.
