So, I lurk in some writer subreddits, and a frequent topic of discussion is prose: what constitutes good prose, how do you write it, how do you improve it, etc. And yesterday I stumbled across one topic about the difference between good descriptive prose, and purple prose. OP asks people to share some of their favourite authors who they think write beautiful prose without tipping into purple. No problem; people are happy to oblige.

One person says that Steinbeck is one of their favourite authors for prose, and then they share an example of what they would consider purple prose. It is so violetly awful that I think the poster must have written it themselves as a kind of parody of purple prose. Other people assumed the same.

But as it turns out, they are quoting from a book written by a YouTuber whose channel ia dedicated to talking about writing (namely, their own writing, which is genius, but often not comprehensible to the drooling plebs).

Naturally, I read the free sample of their book in awe and horror, and I'd like to share some screenshots with you. If you also have trouble defining or understanding what purple prose is, it's this.

Yes, every single fucking page is written like this.

I had the thought that if you’re a nerd who gets asked out as a joke by a popular kid the best way to handle that situation is to be incredibly rude. “What ew no!!” in front of all their friends and then they have to live with the shame of getting shot down by a weird kid. And then I realized Eddie would 100% do this.

#lovee this ideaa and you're so right he would.#taking period typical homophobia into consideration— this would even still work if Steve asked Eddie in private.#Like imagine Steve asks Eddie out in private and Eddie's reasonably like:#‘well. either his mates are around the corner waiting to bash me for being gay. or he’s going to report to them that I am and then bash me.#So Eddie goes full dramatics capital N for NO in his response; he’s gagging. he’s throwing up. he’s laughing his ass off at the question.#Meanwhile Steve is like ‘well fuck you too ig!’ and just leaves with his heart in tatters.#—maybe also with a quick ‘don’t tell anyone abt this or you’re dead.’ for self preservation.#Which SHOULD betray Steve's sincerity but Eddie interprets as Steve being embarrassed that he didn’t catch Eddie out.#To me it’d be juicy if this happened around middle school or before the king Steve era began.#+ gives them context as to why they both individually think the other is a dickhead without the Dustin jealousy plotline #+ also explains some of the naive/reckless hope that Steve might've had to even ask Eddie out.#Like imagine this happened years ago and then season 4 happened— how that would change their relationship.#Maybe Steve tries to steer Robin away from Eddie post s4— bc he’s not sure if Eddie has a problem with gay ppl or just Steve specifically.#Maybe it’s the opposite. Where Steve excited to bring Eddie into a friendship with Rob bc he assumes Eddie is at least safe after;#1. how despite his reaction- he never outted Steve post confession 2. how he seems to have gotten over his dislike of Steve post Vecna #Like imagine Steve just randomly starts talking queer shit with Robin one day— with Eddie in the room— whom is just like ‘….pardon?’#and Steve just looks at him disappointed like ‘… oh…. are you not cool with hearing about this’#and Eddie's like ‘no? yes? how are YOU okay with talking about this’#and Steve's like ‘I mean it took me a second I’m not going to lie. First guy I ever liked was a huge dick about it when I asked him out'#with like a friendly nudge and a laugh. obviously poking fun at the fact he used to like Eddie.#His implication being that EDDIE had a bad- homophobic even- reaction to Steve asking him out.#Steve just goes back to talking to Rob. Meanwhile. Eddie's practically flatlined. because it’s only then it clicks.#Steve's queer. Steve's queer and that ‘joke’ from years ago wasn’t a joke. Steve's queer and he asked Eddie out YEARS ago.#Eddie could have been dating him for YEARS. Inside he is having a borderline pompei level meltdown.#He’s too overwhelmed and/or awkward to say ‘oh. I’m gay. as it turns out. I thought you were making fun of me.’#bc NOW he doesn’t want to come across like he’s hitting on Steve— hoping for more from someone whom is APPARENTLY over him.#and coming out after the topic of how your friend *used* to have a crush on you is brought up— is basically code for 'please still do'.#He overthinks it too much and shoots himself in the foot. again.#Dunno I just think Eddie FINALLY finding a queer friend group but being adopted as the token straight guy is such a fkn funny idea #steddie
