I’ve always wanted to open up a conversation of how important Fight Club is as someone with a self harm addiction (recovering, clean for two months). The impulse to punch yourself, slam your head against a wall, the dizzy feeling of almost passing out and the sharp pain in your forehead, the near exhilaration of bruises and blood forming on your own skin. I’ve been struggling with ctting and several other forms of sh for the last decade and though I have moments of weakness, I’ve had lots of love and support to help me along my journey. There’s not lots of media outright depicting sh addiction, and it means a lot when I find characters with these same compulsions. This is in no way to romanticize self harm, the part of my brain, like Tyler, leads me astray with promise of liberation but in the end… i suffer from major depression and love making myself suffer so I relate to the narrator a lot, hating myself and holding up someone like Tyler as the perfect cleansing of my faults. I think also how self induced insomnia is a form of self harm, it’s every aspect of life until you feel you need to give in, don’t. Always seek help from those who love you. But Jesus. Does anyone else get what I’m saying? This is a safe space for conversation on the topic of fight club and self harm, no judgement I really wanna know if I’m the only one!
