I watched DSoD today for the first time for Atem's birthday - here are my thoughts.

Fun animation, especially love the in-universe explanation being the duel disk updates

Kaiba get the hell out of Atem's tomb omg

So proud of Yugi omg he's growing up

Everyone needs therapy. Everyone.

Poor sweet Kaiba needs a break. His obsession with Yugi is tearing him apart. Also what the surveillance state is he up to. I would be FASCINATED by in-world discourse on him, like what the public thinks of him.

I have mixed feelings about Atem showing up again. It felt like they were trying to straddle the line between him needing to rest and him being able to come out again. I did like the beautiful gold animation of him at the end of the last duel but I feel like seeing Atem again would be so damaging to Yugi's mourning process - like Atem WILL come out for you if you're in enough danger I guess - and I felt like it undercut Yugi's growth to have him show up and win in the end. Also I can't help but imagine Atem being like "okay I'll save your ass but I'm making this quick, you're interrupting my afterlife spa day."

Need to know whether Kaiba ended up in the past or an alternate dimension or the great beyond in the end scene. That was cool but I do feel like it would be more healing for Kaiba to a) realize Atem is gone and b) have a chat with Yugi about that so they can heal together. It seems like he's kinda pulled away from Yugi and friends since S5 which is sad

Always love more of Shadi, I thought the expansion of his character was good

I guess they kinda foreshadowed an 8th millennium item in S5 but ehhhh. It felt too overpowered and out of place

I can't get over Kaiba recreating a version of Atem to fight over and over it's so tragic

Didn't know I needed Joey in a dog suit handing balloons and ice cream to children, I love that for him tbh

Baffled by this show's treatment of Bakura. They like ALMOST did a good job?? He was actually part of the group and then halfway through they just fucking dropped him. Like okay
