I can't say what the difference is between a will and a testament, though. I think maybe it doesn't come up enough in most people's lives. I think most people who aren't estate lawyers have this vague understanding that you can write down instructions for who should get all your stuff after you die, and if you do it properly then it's both "a will" and "a testament" and has legal force, but doing it properly is difficult enough that you have to hire a lawyer to help you do it. I think if you asked people they'd say that they don't know what the difference is between "a will" and "a testament" and probably that's part of why it's so difficult to write these instructions properly. Like, if you do it wrong, you might have written only one of those two things, and that's going to cause your heirs problems.
