How else will you surprise them?

I know people are upset about the ice dance results and about how Ilia Malinin performed, but it's been so hard to watch all those USA chants, U.S. figure skaters repeatedly pointing at the U.S. flags on their team jackets, this extreme tone-deafness about how this reads to the rest of the world right now.

I know the Olympics are inherently stupid and nationalistic in this way, and there isn't really a way around it, but team USA does it like no one else. You don't see any Japanese skaters or fans behave like this. You don't see Canadian skaters behave like this. The U.S. are doing so much harm globally and within their own country, it's so fucked. Like when you think back on how Nazi Germany would participate in the Olympic Games, that's fucked up. You'd be like... man this is really bad. And then to have people point at their national symbols and preach excellence and exceptionalism. Uff.

That's what I also really dislike about Madison Chock and Evan Bates. "American girl", the whole Statue of Liberty Dress, like gurl your country is setting itself on fire and everyone who is vulnerable is being burned alive. Like hello???? Are athletes just more brainwashed or think this is what it takes? If this was a small team from a country with less heinous crimes I'd be like, yeah, great stuff, I'm glad you are here in this soort depite being a small nation with little funding for this sport.
