Story:

This specific au is set in the 1980's, specifically 1983, around the time when The Christian Church was worried about Satanic Panic
Satanic Panic caused mass hysteria and paranoia within the church, with many believing that the pop culture of the time (popular example being DND) as well as other factors would lead children on the path towards satanic rituals and sacrifices, as well as p0rn rings
Yes these events are important. I'm setting the scene people.
Lewis Walker, who is 25 in this story, is training under his Uncle Marshall to become a priest.
When Lewis was young, his father was supposedly murdered by his mother before she vanished into the woods, rumored to be due to a Valium overdosage (Valium was typically used to "calm down" nervy housewives in the 50s and 60s). Lewis to this day doesn't know if that's what really happened to his parents. Anyway, Uncle Marshall then took him under his wing. Their relationship is not great. Lewis sees his uncle as more of a boss than an uncle. From a young age, he was abused and neglected, as well as manipulated into believing the same things his Uncle did. Eventually, this lead to Lewis also developing religious psychosis (although not as bad as his father), as well as depression and BPD 1 (listen man I warned yall this was gonna be bad)
Remember how I said satanic panic was important? Yeah here it is.
Because of satanic panic, the local churches are figuring out how to put an end to the hysteria and regain control order over the people. So, Marshall decides to begin exorcising people (because that's just what they did). However, Marshall, if he couldn't get the "demon" out, would then just destroy the vessel AKA killing the person. He got REALLY popular super fast and everyone just brought their "possessed" love ones to him.
Lewis was NOT ok with this and begged God to do something about it. That's when he met Fern
Fern, or well who Lewis calls Fern, is an archangel. He's one of the top guns, but because he can't reveal his identity to mere humans, so Lewis just calls him Fern.
In this au, Fern remains deaf, but I wanted to spice up his character and give him a sick design, but also defend it. So, here's my defense.
The hands on his ears and mouth are, in fact, his own. They just grew there when he was poofed into existence. Fern's specific purpose is to foretell prophecies. However, sometimes a prophecy will slip out of his mouth. To prevent that, God put an extra hand over his mouth. To protect him from lies, blasphemy, and temptation, God put hands over his ears and made him deaf (I sound crazy, I know. Trust it's good world building, trust).
Fern communicates via telepathic voice (between Lewis and other archangels only) as well as ASL
One day, Fern winds up on Earth, but can't get back to heaven. That's when he meets Lewis. The two strike a deal that Fern will put an end to Marshall's demonic work IF Lewis helps him get back into heaven.
A new problem arises when Lewis starts to obsess over the angel. They begin to fall in love, which you should never do with an archangel. Both Fern and Lewis are possessive, but very loving with each other. Unfortunately, Lewis starts to think Fern is actually a demon toying with him, which doesn't go well. (Dw they get back together)
I have more lore but I need art to explain it better so this is it for now BUT I will be making more parts!!
