I feel like it's a great disservice to the story, and almost a perversion, to group martyrs (2008) with movies such as I spit on your grave and a Serbian film. unlike the latter films, martyrs tells the story of a girl's revenge from childhood trauma, only for it to then be perpetuated onto her lover best friend. it's a film of tragedy and the torture we see is systematic and, I can't say it enough, is not done upon Anna on the basis of her womanhood. mademoiselle says the torture is done upon women because they reach this enlightenment in a more desirable way. but that's it. Anna isn't raped, there's no genital mutilation, her womanhood isn't made into a wound. whereas I spit on your grave and a Serbian film are RAMPANT with gratuitous sexual assault for the sake of shock factor. martyrs is definitely not an easy watch, but to group it with those films on the basis of Anna being flayed alive (the worst of the torture) bastardises the film and the stories of Lucie and Anna.
